TheAdamAndChe··on China accused of forcing 570k people to pick cotton in Xinjiang
It's not particularly intellectually stimulating and likely to cause a flame war.
TheAdamAndChe··on Only Google is really allowed to crawl the web
Are there any actual repercussions for just ignoring robots.txt?
TheAdamAndChe··on Is that ship still stuck?
How does liability work here? Who is liable for all the work required to get the ship dug out? Who keeps the insurance that will pay for all this?
TheAdamAndChe··on Phones and apps reduce your ability to focus even when they don’t distract you
Most links posted to this site are posted for a financial reason one way or another. That doesn't mean they aren't interesting or intellectually stimulating.
TheAdamAndChe··on All my servers have an 8 GB empty file on disk
I don't know with Mac, but this is why many Linux distros recommend putting /home is on a separate partition. If it fills, it won't lock up the whole system.

Fun story with this. Ubuntu now has an experimental root-on-zfs feature. I installed it and started playing with some docker containers, trying to compile a certain version of pytorch. Suddenly, my computer crashed. Apparently, my root partition filled because docker installed everything on the same partition as my OS, crashing everything immediately.

TheAdamAndChe··on GeoGuessing with Deep Learning
I've never traveled like this, merely drove cross-country and didn't experience this. Does it really feel so different?
TheAdamAndChe··on Stallman isn't great, but not the devil
He led, which is good. But does that mean he is the right person to lead the foundation now? I think the article makes a really good argument on why he isn't.

His social awkwardness, his public opinion on contentious issues like abortion or what is considered rape, the fact that he makes people feel uncomfortable. These are distractions that push people away and weaken the foundation's focus on free software. He may be right on those issues, he might not be.

Mob rule is bad, cancel culture is bad. His removal at the hands of such a cancel culture mob is probably part of why he is being put back in a leadership position. But I absolutely understand why people are puzzled by the board's move to bring him back.

TheAdamAndChe··on Pollution from fossil fuel combustion deadlier than previously thought
Only if where you work and purchase necessities is far from where you live. If you live close or work remote, then it would be easy and convenient to walk.
TheAdamAndChe··on Van Eck Phreaking
Seveneves was spectacular, by far one of my all-time favorite books. To each their own, I suppose.
TheAdamAndChe··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
DNA is "translated" from code to proteins using codons. There's a very good chance that the codons used would be completely different from our own, disrupting viral replication.
TheAdamAndChe··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
> I find myself asking why it matters that the Weaver residents were originally not from Austin.

> the real crux of this issue is that rich white people are so much more prioritized by the law that a couple of irate Karens can overrule an entire neighbourhoods opinion.

There's no reason to be racist. Cultures vary regionally. Californians in general act differently than Texans in general. Rural Americans in general act differently than urban Americans. Some people like their culture and community and don't want it to change just because rich outsiders come in.

TheAdamAndChe··on Google Translate is inherently biased – An example of an Hungarian translation
There was no point, just a request for clarification which you provided. Thank you.
TheAdamAndChe··on Google Translate is inherently biased – An example of an Hungarian translation
Who is the "we" you're talking about?
TheAdamAndChe··on Ask HN: What are some tools you wish you had while doing your day to day work?
I wish I had a tool or app that would successfully get me to reduce both phone usage and use of certain apps or websites. Something that could adapt to different people would be good.
TheAdamAndChe··on Red seaweed supplementation reduces enteric methane by over 80% in beef steers
Only grass decomposed in an anaerobic environment would produce methane. Grass decomposed aerobically would produce CO2 instead.
TheAdamAndChe··on Safari is now probably the influential wild card browser for user privacy
The point is that you don't represent everybody, yet the browser gives you a choice instead of forcing you to do something.
TheAdamAndChe··on The transformation of tobacco and cannabis into early modern global obsessions
My judgement isn't clouded, but I've been directly harmed by such misinformation before. I want other people reading to know that nicotine isn't some wonder nootropic that brings no side effects or addiction, because it's just not the case.
TheAdamAndChe··on The transformation of tobacco and cannabis into early modern global obsessions
The same could have been said of tobacco in the 50's. Turns out it was bad for you.

You're spreading misinformation and could get other people addicted. You're making assumptions on my diet just to dismiss the well-known fact that nicotine is addictive[1]. Most sites that say otherwise are either social media sites like reddit where echo chambers form, or they're obviously pro-ecig and extremely biased.

TheAdamAndChe··on The transformation of tobacco and cannabis into early modern global obsessions
This is wrong. Nicotine alone is less addictive than the nicotine-MAOI combination, but it is still extremely addictive. I started with vaping.
TheAdamAndChe··on A call to improve London's lighting at night
> The only time I use [red light] is if I wake up to step out of the tent and pee

> for actually doing anything it just doesn't provide enough light to see

It sounds from your comment like red light is good enough for collision avoidance. Why else would light be needed from street lights? We all carry phones with flashlights nowadays.

TheAdamAndChe··on A call to improve London's lighting at night
If they transition to white LED lights, it will be a big shame. White light disrupts our circadian rhythm, our sleep-wake cycle. It affects bugs, bats, and all sorts of wildlife. It would be much better for everyone if they moved to red street lights.

TheAdamAndChe··on Scientists discover fossil plants beneath mile-deep Greenland ice
This argument is a bit like the "coal is a renewable form of energy because it eventually returns" argument. The consensus is that if the time scales required are on the order of thousands, tens of thousands, or millions of years, then it's safe to call it nonrenewable, and it is safe to call this irreversible on a human time scale.
TheAdamAndChe··on Scientists discover fossil plants beneath mile-deep Greenland ice
It's important to mention the subtleties so we can best prepare, and so that naysayers can't point to localized sea level drops as proof that global warming is a hoax.
TheAdamAndChe··on The transformation of tobacco and cannabis into early modern global obsessions
I made a relevant comment about this a while back[1]. Thinking it was a nootropic got me addicted for years and brought no benefits. I still get the urge to smoke and it's been years now.

Just don't smoke, there are better nootropics.

TheAdamAndChe··on Scientists grow mice embryos in a mechanical womb
Any idea how it would interface with the placenta? Normal mammals use umbilical cords.
TheAdamAndChe··on When Sick Cows Can't Be Culled
Cows that need to be milked welcome milking, otherwise their utters get sore and tender. Just like humans.
TheAdamAndChe··on Let there be more biographies of failures
If you work on things with a 5% chance of success but 1000x potential return, it absolutely makes sense to keep trying if you have the capacity to take on that much risk.
TheAdamAndChe··on When Sick Cows Can't Be Culled
It discusses that in the article. 80% Of Indians are Hindus and believe cows are sacred. Suggesting they abandon their cultural beliefs just to maximize yields is ignorant of their way of life. Not everyone needs to live or believe like us.
TheAdamAndChe··on The auction that set off the race for AI supremacy
I personally don't want infrastructure or tools to dictate the bounds of my morality or the overton window of the whole society.
TheAdamAndChe··on Finding a standard dataset format for machine learning (2020)
Wouldn't that be inefficient? The software would then have to parse a json string after the sqlite query.
