Case swapping is wrong on these.

Half right. Are you talking about Ian? that happened on one transaction.

Considering how tight knit our community is... I prefer to err on the side of respect, even if I disagree with some people's practices.

There's an SGUG admin I disagree with on this, but we get along anyways because we're both adults. I won't pretend I've been perfect, but quitting the booze in the quantity I was doing helped a bunch

I obtain copyright permission of all original images before uploading and give people clear contacts to do it. I refuse to install extensions that could clobber the setup (many aren't compatible with postgres). I also make an attempt to contact rightsholders. the only stuff I don't have permission for is a few system image placeholders and the logos of companies. The SGI trademarks are basically gone though, HPE ain't using them.

> If you can find ways to collect and preserve copies of the software, that can be big value. Every version and variation of a title has sometimes been important after the fact. Maybe use archive.org for historical archiving of software with unclear licensing status, and link to it from your wiki, with your wiki providing the background text and organizing that isn't archive.org's strong suit. (I'm not talking about piracy, but just trying to ensure that any copy at all survives, which had been a real problem on some other platforms of this era. Also, it's easier to get a company to say that such-and-such software from a company three acquisitions ago is OK for people to run on vintage boxes and in emulators and museums, than to ask them to find and provide a working copy, which they usually cannot.)

Over at IRIXNet we do have some files and such preserving what's not likely to get us in trouble, but I choose to not deal with copyrighted works on tech-pubs (which unlike IRIXNet is my pet project, not a part of IRIXNet)

If you don't tell people where, how are we gonna fix it? I found ONE broken image. one. It took me hours to find it. Please don't just vaguely tell me one image somewhere is broken. Please be specific next time!

How am i gonna fix it if you don't tell me WHERE?

I'm not trying to be a dick. I wanna fix it. I need to know how and where it's a problem!

If we can get an FPGA core of the Indy's XL/24 board and helper chips, you can buy a cheap pack of R5ks on alibaba last I checked and probably make a smol sgi board

As time permits! I'm the only current article writer at this time

Not at all. I haven't changed my principles. I simply learned how to say things better.

I'm not blaming the victims for anything. But I am absolutely saying that you need to modify your behavior in order to get what you want oftentimes. Suggesting that people make even the smallest changes to their lives in 2025 is apparently victim blaming.

The name is kind of ridiculous though. Sounds like a misspelling by East Asians, so nah, it'd have to be named something different.

Otherwise people are going to get accusations that it's a South Park thing.

ThatGuyRaion··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
It's not intended that way.

It's intended that you understand the consequences of your actions. If you're a primary order thinker who can't think past the first step then you got to be way more cautious with your life.

It's not okay but he's giving them ammunition by mentioning them and complaining about them. It proves that it's working.

When I started getting harassed in 2022 over an ill advised post on a site, the only thing that stopped it was to sandbag everything and rethink how I interacted on the internet.

I checked into Reiser4 and they are still indeed working on that out of tree. Hats off to people who stick to it, though I think renaming the file system would have been a smart idea.

That's the only other project I can think of that's out of tree besides the usual suspect (ZoL)

This looks potentially promising. Always interested in replacements for proprietary web software.

I replied to another commenter about this, but these sorts of things are basically part and parcel of being a public figure.

If you can't handle that, you need to sandbag. There's no other way around it. It is unlikely that Marcan will stop being the center of attention wherever he goes.

If he wants to stand up for what he believes to be right, he shouldn't have a problem with the consequences of dealing with people who disagree with him, sometimes virulently.

Trans issues are a very contentious issue right now and in my opinion the only way to win that type of situation is to not play. Doesn't mean I don't respect those people, but taking large public stances just put targets on your back

ThatGuyRaion··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
These sorts of things come part and parcel if you are on the internet for any length of time. It's just not possible to have one not the other.

If you actually follow the exchange, he threw temper tantrums until he got suspended off Mastodon. I don't know, but that's not what I would expect from a professional developer.
ThatGuyRaion··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
Well, if anyone broke the law or harmed him he needs to go to law enforcement or the FBI. Outside of that, just get used to be thrown abuse of all kinds. If you get tagged by a group like that the more you talk about them the more you give them ammo.

And getting emotionally involved. As Johnny Knoxville said: when you get emotional you become irrational and when you become irrational everything is real to you
ThatGuyRaion··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
Marcan brings up plenty of good points regarding contributing to kernel.org being stuck in the 1990s.

However, he's got no social skills nor does he have what it takes to man up and understand he won't get his way.

Additionally I doubt that he really is dealing with stalkers to the degree that he is implying; real people don't talk about their stalkers so much. When I was stalked and harassed I kept the details light and didn't provide much in the way of actual community details because I went to the FBI and local police to deal with it. And yes a few people not only got no contact orders, but lost jobs, families, and more over their exposure.

Marcan is extremely talented, but talent doesn't equal "I get to get my way." All the time. This idea that conflicts need to be resolved quickly and in the favor of a golden boy is a millennial/zoomer issue.

ThatGuyRaion··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2
Not everyone is using a standard tool chain or anything like that and oftentimes when I find projects with atypical build systems that give me trouble I tend to just move on to something else
ThatGuyRaion··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2
It's basically a giant GCCism. Don't be condescending.
ThatGuyRaion··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2
Last I touched it they only had glitchy make files and I don't like cmake particularly, I was just like "bespoke make files are fine if they're posix compliant, but these aren't"
ThatGuyRaion··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2
> Just install the binary package from whatever distro you use? Why do you need to build it?

Cuz I'm actually a packaging maintainer for a couple different old operating systems. Regardless I thank you for being thankful even though I feel like you were being backhanded and demeaning on a number of levels.

ThatGuyRaion··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2
zstd is a great setup, for sure, but the build system they use is patently awful. Can someone make an autoconf or hell, even CMake build system for them pleasee???
ThatGuyRaion··on Tilde, My LLVM Alternative
I appreciate several things about this compiler already:

MIT license (the king of licenses, IMHO. That's not an objective statement though)

Written in easy to understand C.

No python required to build it. (GCC requires perl, and I think that Perl is way easier to bootstrap then Python for LLVM)

No Apple. I don't know if you all have seen some of the Apple developers talking with people but some of them are extremely condescending and demeaning towards people of non-formal CS backgrounds. I get it, in a world where you are one of the supreme developers it's easy to be that way but it's also just as bad as having people like Theo or historical Torvalds.

ThatGuyRaion··on So you want to build your own data center
Not saying I don't agree with you but most tech businesses that have their own "Data center" usually have a private cage in a Colo.
ThatGuyRaion··on Branchless UTF-8 Encoding
So is this potentially performance improving?.
