TechnicolorByte··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
Incredible company. It’s absolutely insane how far ahead they are with the investments they made over a decade ago.

So nice to see a “hard” engineering (from silicon to software) SV-founded company getting all this recognition. Especially after what has felt like a decade of SV hype software companies dominating the mainstream financial markets pre-pandemic with a spate of overpriced IPOs or large ad-revenue generating mega corporations.

TechnicolorByte··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
Nvidia is dragging the entire gaming industry forward with ray/path tracing and AI-based resolution and frame scaling. Everyone else (I.e., AMD) is following Nvidia’s lead.

In what way has Nvidia “forgotten” gamers with the rise of their datacenter business?

TechnicolorByte··on Nvidia H100 GPUs: Supply and Demand
AMD has won many contracts for supercomputers no doubt due to their lower pricing. But there’s a good reason why no one is buying them in droves for AI workloads.

Also:

> For visualization workloads LUMI has 64 Nvidia A40 GPUs.

TechnicolorByte··on BasicBlocker: ISA Redesign to Make Spectre-Immune CPUs Faster (2021)
I don’t get the analogy. Can someone explain? How do you spend only 1.25 time and 1.5 energy to do the equivalent “work” of 4 “visits”? Not seeing the connection to computer arch and speculative execution.
TechnicolorByte··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
Like others said it’s probably to commoditize their competition. The models don’t matter so much as ownership of the platform and critical data. Which is why OpenAI is in a tricky position (although I guess they’re partnered with Microsoft).

It seems like the existing large platforms of today—Microsoft’s enterprise moat, Google’s ads and internet services, Meta’s social networks, Apple’s consumer and mobile products—will remain the primary platforms of the future. So having models that can operate exclusively on those platforms via integration to their key products and date will only continue this trend. If you’re an outsider with an AI model, you’ll have a harder time getting access to critical data and your standalone AI product (e.g., ChatGPT) won’t be as useful.

More broadly speaking, I believe the days where the top X largest companies in the stock company would be displaced by newer companies every decade or so is over. The FAANGs just control so many major platforms in so many aspects of our lives.

Had to look this up. Really need to read THGTTG one day. Been recommended so much

Many people, myself included, disliked him long before the invasion of Ukraine started. Does that put us in your good books?
TechnicolorByte··on Threads isn’t for news and politics, says Instagram’s boss
> The goal isn't to replace Twitter. The goal is to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter.

So only the super PC, brand friendly stuff? Guess I shouldn’t be surprised given it’s Meta but disappointing if true. How can you have a public square without fostering news and political niches? That doesn’t mean you have to shove it in everyone’s feeds like Elon’s Twitter.

So it really will just be instagram with a text focus then. Was hoping all the influencer/celeb/brand focus early on was just a result of early app launch and no following feed yet.

TechnicolorByte··on Why Nvidia Keeps Winning
Agreed. Nvidia’s success comes from their unrelenting drive and ability to pivot to new markets. They didn’t independently discover that GPUs would be super useful for DL but they did see the incredible potential and invested big time into it.

So while completion will come, Nvidia isn’t going to pull an Intel and sit by collecting datacenter revenue on incrementally better hardware. The way I see it, Nvidia will really only be outdone by some major paradigm shift in their biggest markets, e.g., a breakthrough in AI computing that no longer relies on digital ICs.

TechnicolorByte··on Why Nvidia Keeps Winning
Really surprised to see such low effort commentary akin to Reddit/twitter on here.

In what way has Nvidia abandoned the consumer market? They have something like 80%+ market share on discrete gaming GPUs and still rake in billions a year from GeForce, which at their revenue is a sizable fraction.

And what makes you say that current AI hype is a grift? Do you truly think that the work with transformers is just a fad? I swear people on this site were saying the same thing about AI in general 3+ years ago before transformers blew up the scene.

TechnicolorByte··on Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over Threads
Your last sentence makes me wonder when Meta decided on the launch date for Threads. Were they always planning to launch it early summer timeframe or they seized on the recent Zuck/Musk fight drama + twitter rate limiting to maximize eyeballs? Threads is far from feature complete.
TechnicolorByte··on Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over Threads
Yup. Her strategy was reported last week: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/06/linda-yaccarinos...
TechnicolorByte··on Threads has passed 2M sign ups in the first 2 hours
You can still deactivate account separately. Looks like they’ll eventually get some proper delete functionality: https://www.threads.net/t/CuXRXDdNOtH/
TechnicolorByte··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
Appreciate the explanation. His unique perspective does sound useful.
TechnicolorByte··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
Does it say anything that isn’t already common knowledge on healthy living and best practices? E.g., exercise several times a week, avoid processed food and red meat, eat mostly veggies and lean protein and fish, get enough high quality sleep, etc.
TechnicolorByte··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Agreed. It’s a small but sizable community that, as you said, wouldn’t cause problems like the group that left Reddit for Voat. I realize it’s a much bigger challenge as a one man team to create a full Reddit clone and not just a nice client for it. But I really hope the Apollo dev considers teaming up with others to go for it.
TechnicolorByte··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Honestly not a bad idea. Apollo has such a dedicated fanbase that if you get them to adopt a new community, then the quality of posts will start out pretty high. So much of Reddit is crap anyway so drop in quantity from lack of network effect wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Focus on Apollo’s strengths: great UX and bring it to the web.

Ofc the major issue is how to avoid enshittification. Having a good monetization strategy from the start is key. Hardest part besides attracting large user count is to attack some of Reddit’s failings: terrible arbitrary moderation. That’s the tricky part.

TechnicolorByte··on Nvidia Short Sellers Lose $2.3B in One Day as Stock Soars
There is a reason: chips are costlier to manufacture now on a per-transistor basis. As Jensen says, Moore’s Law in its original economic sense is dead.
TechnicolorByte··on Google Launches AI Supercomputer Powered by Nvidia H100 GPUs
This narrative has been pushed for several years now with the likes of Habana, Cerebras, SambaNova, Graphcore, Tesla Dojo, etc.

And yet none of them seem to have made any dent in Nvidia’s dominance. None of them have any real presence on industry-standard MLPerf benchmarks (not even TPU releases all benchmarks and they started the damn benchmark).

The truth is that making an AI chip isn’t as simple as putting a bunch of matmuls together in a custom ASIC and pointing a driver at it; there’s hard work and optimization the entire stack down, many of which aren’t even focused on the math part.

So while I don’t doubt that some competitors (AMD?) will gain decent market share eventually, Nvidia’s probably not going to be displaced so easily.

TechnicolorByte··on What made Hinton into an AI doomer
Having a tenuous grasp of how modern AI/DL networks work and an even more tenuous grasp of neuroscience, can I ask for a ELI5 of the above and a source?

Are you saying that Hinton is not a doomer and believes that AGI is inevitable very soon?

TechnicolorByte··on Airbnb’s CEO spent 6 months living in his rentals and found the core problem

TechnicolorByte··on Quantum physics falls apart without imaginary numbers
Incredible analogy! The closer is a keeper:

TechnicolorByte··on Fox News, Dominion Voting Systems reach $787,500,000 settlement
Not really a shocker that they settled given all the embarrassing texts/emails showing the blatant lies Fox execs and media figureheads were engaging in. Just surprising that it took them this long—the start of the trial—to settle.

Would be nice if the Fox News crowd would read some of those messages to wake up from all the manipulation.

TechnicolorByte··on AI Analog Chips Have 6-10x TOPS/Watt vs. Digital
And as Dylan Patel notes in his reply [1], none of it matters if it isn’t measured doing real work. Comparing the cost of hardware matmul is the same type of thinking that lead to prediction of Nvidia’s quick demise in the face of numerous AI chip startups. It’s just matrix multiples after all!

TechnicolorByte··on Modular is building a next-generation AI developer platform
Agreed, I feel like I’ve seen this pitch before. Intel’s OneAPI was supposed to solve this heterogeneous hardware/platform problem but doesn’t seem like they’ve made any dent.

Curious to see what Modular is planning. They’ve definitely got star power so hopefully it’s not just hype.

TechnicolorByte··on I worked at Google for -10 days
Great username. I’d like to think that you’re working from the inside to take the whole system down :~)

A few questions:

1. What does giving it back 2x mean? You work overtime voluntarily or something like that?

2. Is what you’re describing a type of self-care or confidence? Trying to understand what your recommendation is and how to put it to action because it sounds great.

3. If you were serious about the therapy comment, can I ask what concrete steps you took in therapy to build up this confidence/self-care? What did you discuss with your therapist?

TechnicolorByte··on Ask HN: How to prepare for AI taking my programming job?
FIRE. If you’re working in American tech, especially in the VHCOL areas, there’s absolutely no excuse to not be saving and investing a significant (arbitrarily >>30% of gross pay) amount of your income. Don’t go overboard on the spending and lifestyle inflation. None of this means you have to live a miserly life; instead, you’re preparing ahead such that you don’t have to worry about being solely dependent on whatever future government handout (UBI, SS, etc.) exists along with everyone else. And hey, if this whole AI thing doesn’t pan out and we’re all still working, then your life is all the better anyway being financially independent.

Perhaps the one counter to this is that a future where AI can displace large swaths of knowledge workers is one where the economy and, by extension, your investments become disrupted in a negative way. But that seems unlikely.

TechnicolorByte··on China slaps security review on AI products as Alibaba unveils ChatGPT challenger

Ars link of the same article (meant to share this one).

Most relevant part:

> “Content generated by generative artificial intelligence should embody core socialist values and must not contain any content that subverts state power, advocates the overthrow of the socialist system, incites splitting the country or undermines national unity,” the CAC [Cyberspace Administration of China] rules state.

And wow, the irony of the name of Alibaba’s ChatGPT product, “Tongyi Qianwen, which roughly translates to ‘truth from a thousand questions.’”

Even Pepsi and Coca-Cola have obvious differences with many preferring the latter. Store-brand cola is an even bigger difference.
TechnicolorByte··on Ask HN: Software folks, what’s your Plan B?
FIRE for me. Been saving up good chunk of earnings for the past several years just for the financial independence aspect even without the potential of AI displacement. Having said that, if disruption really does get that bad, then I question what my investment portfolio will be worth.
