TechTechTech··on Cloudflare is now powering Microsoft Edge Secure Network
All fun and games, till some day Microsoft acquires Cloudflare and the internet effectively becomes one big corporate intranet.
TechTechTech··on Nucor and Helion to Develop 500 MW Fusion Power Plant by 2030
If you want to learn more about Helion, I recommend you watch this excellent video by Real Engineering https://youtu.be/_bDXXWQxK38
TechTechTech··on Google Podcasts, which is an actual thing, to shut down next year
This is sad.

I use Google Podcasts because of its simple UI. I am subscribed to a few creators and the clean UX "just works", also on Android Auto as I listen to most podcasts on the road.

Hope at least they integrate the podcast functionality well into Youtube Music without bloating the Android Auto functionality too much...

TechTechTech··on OpenBSD/ARM64 on Hetzner Cloud
As someone who runs 10+ hetzner servers for 3+ years now in both Finland and Germany region, I indeed get what I pay for.

Stellar performance, stable servers with specs as advertised and very good pricing and connectivity.

TechTechTech··on HuggingFace Training Cluster as a Service
At the moment of writing the cost estimate for 70B multimodal model with 7T tokens on 1000 H100 GPUs is $18,461,354 with 184 days of training time.

Anyone willing to share an estimate how cost will come down each year as hardware keeps improving and possible new methodologies are found?

Personally I would not be surprised if it is possible to train the same dataset for half the cost 12 months from now.

TechTechTech··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
"If you’re a Cloudflare customer:You don’t have to do anything! Cloudflare will automatically ask for and utilize Private Access Tokens"

TechTechTech··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
Hi, kind of hijacking this conversation but as Cloudflare is unfortunately routing the majority of websites I visit I have to ask this:

Can you guarantee my Firefox browser will keep on working on 'the open internet' now Chrome moves towards "Web Environment Integrity" and Safari towards "Private Access Tokens" and Cloudflare is supporting and implementing such technologies on scale?

I intent to not participate in these DRM APIs with my Firefox browser and would like to keep browsing the internet.

TechTechTech··on X tells advertisers to spend $1k per month or risk losing verification status
Yes it is 𝕏 (U+1D54F, Mathematical Double-Struck Capital X)
TechTechTech··on Here come the “metahumans”: Virtual avatars have real jobs in Indonesia
Could be based on MetaHuman (Epic Games) as it is well integrated with Unreal Engine which is already in use for television production.

TechTechTech··on Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive: Display
I have been following Framework from a distance, but latest video of Linus (LTT) interacting with framework ceo really pushed me towards buying framework as my next laptop. Great to see a caring ceo and company

TechTechTech··on Show HN: I open sourced the QR designer from my failed startup
Thanks for open sourcing this.

Reminds me of halftone QR codes http://vecg.cs.ucl.ac.uk/Projects/SmartGeometry/halftone_QR/...

TechTechTech··on Western Digital Network Security Incident
Their My Cloud product is also offline https://status.mycloud.com/os4
TechTechTech··on Ask HN: Best Uses for Old iPads?
I have an old iPad taped to the wall to run home assistant as well. I run a vnc client on the iPad which connects to a Firefox docker container on my nas rendering the full HA front end (jlesage/firefox). Works decently well, including touch. I set resolution to native iPad so output is real clear.
TechTechTech··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
I got an actual `HTTP 402: PAYMENT_REQUIRED` response (never seen one of those in the wild, according to Mozilla it is experimental). Someone's credit card stopped scaling?
TechTechTech··on I Taught ChatGPT to Invent a Language
I tried and it works, just as in the blog. It comes up with some different words, see https://i.imgur.com/hFQgraL.png for the start of the conversation.
TechTechTech··on Tesla.com/.gitignore

TechTechTech··on WebVM: WASM virtual machine in browser with networking via Tailscale
Makes me think of the excellent JSLinux by Bellard, https://bellard.org/jslinux/. Runs Linux / Windows 2000 in the browser with internet and file storage. Or another one which can boot a custom iso you provide, http://copy.sh/v86/
TechTechTech··on Let's Encrypt is down
Just a quick question. Does this mean that if your OCSP servers were to go down, a lot of SSL enabled websites and applications will stop working? Seems like a serious single point of failure for modern day internet. I was always under the assumption that clients do not have to contact the CA (every time?) before a TLS handshake takes place.

OCSP Stapling seems to be the way to mitigate this problem, but not all web servers implement it (for instance lighttpd does not). Any recommendation from Let's Encrypt on this issue?

TechTechTech··on Show HN: SECCOMP – A Secure Spreadsheet
Looks like a closed-source implementation of a Homomorphic Encryption algorithm.

"Homomorphic encryption is a form of encryption that allows computations to be carried out on ciphertext, thus generating an encrypted result which, when decrypted, matches the result of operations performed on the plaintext." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homomorphic_encryption
