I make robots mostly. I want to figure out how robots can help solve social problems. Read my writing or see my portfolio at tlalexander.com and see my robots at http://reboot.love

You are welcome to email me but usually I don’t end up responding to out of the blue emails (due to procrastination or disorganization). [tlalexander at gmail]

My hope is either to make it fun enough that people want to do it a few hours a week just to contribute back to others, or find a payment scheme that doesn’t lead to little kings trying to rule everyone.
You’re describing a race to the bottom for quality of jobs. But in this system we all have to have jobs, so you’re describing a race to the bottom for quality of life for most people. I think it is reasonable to question and discuss how we can better optimize our goals so that people’s material needs are met but jobs also don’t suck.
> So workers do own the companies, in proportion to how much value they deliver to the world due to market cap weighting.
This claim hides a great deal of assumptions about economics that are highly contested. For example the idea that how many shares you buy is proportional to the value you deliver assumes that workers with zero shares deliver zero value, which is obviously false. This also assumes that wealthier people, who own more of the shares in index funds, and delivering proportionally more value. Lending does have value, but it has limits. Imagine in the extreme case a company with 100 employees where 100% of the shares are owned by one person. Does that person provide 100% of the value?
My point more directly is that worker’s labor has value unrelated to ownership in shares, and simply offering stock options is not the same as a worker owned company, in practice.
Add to the list of benefits to Meta that it keeps LeCun happy.
It’s just one thing at a time, and giving it some months to balance out in my system.
Honestly I have a transgender doctor at one of the best trans care clinics in the country. I’m all set. Just wanted to share that finasteride is not always without side effects. My doctor and I can figure out my HRT.
Honestly it’s a little unnerving being told by strangers on the internet I should change my HRT. I’ve got a transgender doctor at one of the best Trans care clinics in the country. I get that folks are trying to help but really I’m fine.
Also I’m 39, so whatever masculinization I’m due for I suspect has all happened already.
It is hard to tell if what I am experiencing is a side effect of the finasteride unrelated to my T levels, or it is due to some reduction in the effects of testosterone because of the mechanism of action of the finasteride. If it is the latter, switching to injections and doing monotherapy to lower my T could have the same effects. The fact of the matter is the penis functions better with testosterone in my system but testosterone also leads to hair loss, so trying to get both is somewhat of an imperfect balancing act.
But hey, I'm having the best sex of my life and the people I am attracted to think I am hot as hell so I don't mind a little experimentation to see what works best! Actually its super cool what we can do with a little hormonal alchemy.
Not sure I buy "Murphy predicts" but large asteroid impacts carry far more energy than any terrestrial explosion. The nuclear materials don't need to add any energy to that for the risk to be present.
He was truly an exceptionally brutal, evil, vile, and selfish person with no regard for the humanity of indigenous peoples.
Like if you buy a gold ring, I suspect its cost will be pretty related to the base price of commodity gold, the labor involved in creating it, and a reasonable markup for the company to survive. But it is too commoditizatized for it to have the super high prices diamonds have. Knowing that diamonds are horribly overpriced will reduce some people's desire to actually buy one. So telling people this helps save people money.
Don’t feel too bad though. I’m simply waiting for them to continue the Bay Bridge bicycle path from Yerba Buena Island to San Francisco (completing the Oakland to SF bicycle path) and that’s also not slated for completion till 2030.
California is looking at legalizing psychedelic therapy without full legalization which is an interesting approach. I think ultimately adults should be allowed to make their own choices, as I’ve had very meaningful trips in a friends living room for a few dollars and a fully regulated therapeutic setting will probably cost $1000 (based on costs in Oregon). But maybe a therapy-first based approach will help underscore the need for appropriate ritual around these materials. Ultimately though adults are allowed to take risks with alcohol and other substances, and I think we should be free to do so with psychedelics too.

And we should absolutely continue research to learn more about the adverse effects. Obviously they help a lot of people, but must be done with care and seem not to be helpful for every person. We must learn more about these conditions.
> Why don't female lesbians display this behaviour?
Try undergoing a transition from a testosterone dominant system to an estrogen dominant system and you will understand. The nature of sexual urges under testosterone is very different from that of estrogen. Arousal under testosterone feels very urgent. I can control myself but imagine an abused 20 year old who never learned healthy self management. Without PrEP their urges may get them killed before they ever learn to control their impulses.
> I am against the prevailing hedonistic culture.
You can be against whatever you want. I am just explaining some facts about the benefits of PrEP for people that think differently from you.
Increasingly, I am not putting much weight in any predictions about whether this will happen in the way we think it will, or what it could possibly mean. We might as well be talking about the rapture.
For now that is fiction, but so is "if all software was free". I do think though that both would lead to a faster rate of innovation in society versus one where critical information is withheld from society to pay someone's rent and food bills.
These all have the property which is that they are scarce physical goods or services. Software is not scarce (though of course the labor to create it is), so this is a really bad comparison.
And again I did not say it should or should not be free, I said there are engineering benefits to open source software and more and more people recognize those benefits and choose to make things free because they see the value and are willing to recognize the tradeoffs. I never said what "should" be done. "Should" is kind of a nonsense term when used in this way as it hides a lot of assumptions, so I generally do not use it, and notably did not use it in my comment. I want to point out the peculiarity in your rather strong response to a word and concept I never used. I think you are having an argument with imagined people, not a discussion with me.
And for what it is worth, I am a robotics engineer and I am designing a completely open source solar powered farming robot designed to be made in a small shop in any city in the world (see my profile), funded by a wealthy robotics entrepreneur who recognizes the value in making this technology available to people all over the world.
So I am one of those engineers making this choice, and not someone just asking for things without doing the same of my work. Everything I produce is open source, including person projects and even my personal writing.
