I’m sure there will be some value, especially as the LLM systems become capable of doing more of the work, but as a professional robotics engineer with a focus on mechanical engineering, OpenSCAD just cannot perform appropriately to serve as a primary CAD platform for professional mechanical design. Parametric GUI based design has so many advantages, a key one being that you can click on a feature and change it easily.

TaylorAlexander··on Microsoft formally deprecates the Windows Control Panel
Since we are comparing to Windows, the "disabling Red Hat telemetry from command line" step doesn't really count, since Windows out of the box is loaded with telemetry.

Gotcha thanks for the info. It's funny, Apple's new OS is called Sequoia, yet there is no environment in the sequoias (aka redwoods)!

I did find some discussion about how they are made, but there does not yet seem to be a documented process. https://www.reddit.com/r/VisionPro/comments/1am8e00/how_to_c...

TaylorAlexander··on iPhone 16 could let you shoot in JPEG-XL
RAW is the correct format for uncompressed images, and you can shoot RAW on iphone: https://support.apple.com/en-us/119916

> I feel like PNG was a really bad format back when hard drives were 100GB

You talk about "hard drive" space even though phones don't have hard drives (more to the point, even if you transfer photos to your desktop they will start on your phone and take up space). The iPhone 15 base model comes with 128GB storage. Uncompressed images take up huge amounts of space and that still affects network transfer times, phone storage, cloud storage, etc.

Anyway you can shoot RAW on your phone right now, which is what you are looking for. Still, it is a niche application because of the storage required.

TaylorAlexander··on Meta cancels high-end mixed reality headset after Apple Vision Pro struggles
I would absolutely die of laughter if Tim Cook came on stage and said "we worked really hard and we think you will agree, this iPhone is definitely in our top 3 iPhone models ever released. It is really quite good. Seriously, its nearly as good as last year's model, which was great!"
TaylorAlexander··on Meta cancels high-end mixed reality headset after Apple Vision Pro struggles
I grew up in the redwood forest and I do not always have enough time in my life to go back to them. I would love a vision pro experience where I can be in the redwoods! I think for me the teleportation experience is more important than gaming, tho gaming is rad too (I loved Half Life Alyx on my Index).

Do you know if there are environments available that are in the redwood forest?

Also does anyone know what kind of money someone could make publishing these environments? I have some videography experience - I would be inclined to rent a high end VR camera and create some captures for Vision Pro, but it would be nice if I could sell them on the app store and earn enough to buy a Vision Pro.

TaylorAlexander··on Evidence stacks up for poisonous books containing toxic dyes
It is unclear to me how prevalent those fears were. The device was invented sure, someone had this fear or someone thought someone did, but how common was that really.

The CEO of a company selling them says he likes them, and they are selling more quickly than a product which flopped. I am not particularly swayed by this information!

TaylorAlexander··on Condé Nast Signs Deal with OpenAI
Counter point: I was able to convince Gemini that a human baby is larger than a Saturn V rocket by simply telling it as much, to which it responded that its previous statements had been wrong and I was indeed correct.

The models being sycophantic and suggestible is another issue, but it’s not hard to get them to agree with false information.

TaylorAlexander··on HID Remapper
That’s fair. Hard to balance participating in open source community with standing up for our rights.
TaylorAlexander··on HID Remapper
I would love it if you could help! I wonder if it would be sufficient to work on it via github issues. Here is the issue I posted, which could be re-opened. I can also post on discord for you if that is helpful. Maybe you could post your interest in that issue and then I can link to it in discord and ask them to discuss it with you on the issues page?

https://github.com/OpenStickCommunity/GP2040-CE/issues/515

TaylorAlexander··on HID Remapper
Well they even closed the github issue after some discussion, determining it was "not on our roadmap any time soon", but maybe I could ask again. https://github.com/OpenStickCommunity/GP2040-CE/issues/515
TaylorAlexander··on HID Remapper
Definitely possible, but it would ruin an otherwise nice development environment. For personal use that would be fine, but I tend to try to design things as nice complete open source projects people could use and enjoy using. Plugging in to one USB port to program the RP2040 and then another to test the force feedback control is not ideal for development.

It would work though, and I do want a wheel even for myself (the surplus motor I got for it is a beast). Might be my best bet.

TaylorAlexander··on HID Remapper
Something similar that I want us USB Force Feedback wheel (and joystick) support for the RP2040. I looked pretty deeply in to this and I was unable to find any libraries which do the necessary USB magic for the chip to build devices which show up on a computer as force feedback. There’s some code for the Atmega32u4 to do it and in general there is documentation around the web for how this stuff works, but actually digging in to USB spec stuff is not really my thing.

There is an open source gamepad library for the RP2040 but they said on GitHub issues and discord that they have no plan to pursue force feedback support.

But I designed a really nice brushless motor controller for the RP2040 and I’d love to make a force feedback wheel with it! I already have a motorized wheel I built to test this and I even made it work with motorized return to center as a regular USB joystick device, I just don’t know the magic incantations to make it in to a force feedback device.

TaylorAlexander··on Disrupting a covert Iranian influence operation
Agreed. I think the short term profit motive is really blinding people to the risks. Like we could have continued this in a research setting for longer to really get a sense for how to deal with these things, but folks wanted to productize because of profit potential backed by incredible hype.
TaylorAlexander··on Photon entanglement could explain the rapid brain signals behind consciousness
This is a great example of issues with LLM design, which is that they apply a constant amount of compute to both sentences (modulo a token or two).
TaylorAlexander··on Disrupting a covert Iranian influence operation
It’s frustrating too seeing some people in AI say the technology has no negative implications. Of course it does. Foreign actors are using it to influence elections. But when Jeremy Howard was asked if he had done impact assessment of a large open source model release, he replied (roughly) “No. Impact is about the same as a new release of pencil and paper.”

Which… actually that’s not true. Iran isn’t using pencil and paper to influence US elections, they’re using LLMs. And if all the big cloud providers cut them off, they’ll move to using home brew models. That is the impact and putting our head in the sand about it isn’t going to be helpful.

This is NOT to say we should not release to models! I think we should release open models, and that in addition to that we should also care about written impact assessments so everyone is on the same page about risks! I think it’s great that Jeremy Howard is releasing open foundation models, but I wish he wasn’t so flippant about the real world implications. I’ve always looked up to him for the work he has done, and found that attitude very disappointing.

TaylorAlexander··on Pixel smartphones delivered with secret but inactive remote maintenance
Agreed! Snowden taught us a lot and sadly most people don’t seem to realize what it means. People say “the government can’t get in to Signal it’s encrypted and the protocol is well tested” and it’s like… yeah unless they can directly access the keys on your phone, and funny we keep seeing long standing vulnerabilities so actually no normal computer has ever been “secure”. Idk people aren’t paranoid enough. But I’m glad you get it!

My next question is does Verizon know the users passwords (possibly via some other exploit we don’t know about) and did some state agency encourage Verizon to request that software so that access to confiscated devices was a subpoena or fisa court order away.

Really don't love your condescension in this thread. It makes this place worse when people talk like that.

Anyway I am not hoping, I am busting my ass in open source to contribute to the body of knowledge around what makes open information work.
