Tarucho··on Kernel bugs hide for 2 years on average. Some hide for 20
can you prove that?
Tarucho··on LLMs Are Not Fun
I don´t understand. Most answers say they want to program but that they don´t want to type, compile, debug, add files to the project, refactor, etc. Well that´s programming.

Asking a prompt to do something is asking a prompt to do something.

In my case I fear the day comes where I can not program anymore and I have to give orders to a prompt.

Tarucho··on Beginning January 2026, all ACM publications will be made open access
Will they end up using ads? (not joking)
Tarucho··on Job-seekers are dodging AI interviewers
Not only meritocracy. A big part also believes that they are better than the rest. So they think these problems will never touch them.

I don´t know. Maybe we spend too much time alone in front of a monitor to understand what´s really going on.

Tarucho··on 15,000 lines of verified cryptography now in Python
Not saying it isn´t useful but with this change Python's crypto depends on Microsoft (https://fstar-lang.org/ and https://project-everest.github.io/)
Tarucho··on Introducing command And commandfor In HTML
I like how they present it as a novel idea, when this is as old as it gets. This is not new of course but it seems it won´t stop. Ever.
Tarucho··on GitHub Copilot: The Agent Awakens
Time to quit using Github?
Tarucho··on GitHub Copilot: The Agent Awakens
They are not going to say "we are making an agent to replace programmers. We will use their code and their guidance to train it"
Tarucho··on Attracting and Retaining Debian Contributors
The problem with these large open source projects is that they are already on maintenance mode and the fun part has already been done a long ago. Who wants to work for months doing menial tasks so that when they "graduate" they can start doing maintenance.

Tarucho··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand

Tarucho··on Show HN: Heynote – A dedicated scratchpad for developers
Great work! I´ve been looking for something like this for quite a time!

C# syntax support would be welcomed.

Tarucho··on Why did older computers and OSes use UPPER case instead of lower case?
Maybe because it makes it easier to read to people with impaired vision. Just a guess.
Tarucho··on Ripgrep is faster than grep, ag, Git grep, ucg, pt, sift (2016)
I guess it is because after decades of use, grep has probably been fixed to handle lots of user cases that the new tools don´t handle because they haven´t found them yet.
Tarucho··on Ask HN: Learn C in 2023?
The C programming language book.
Tarucho··on Ask HN: How to do that you need to do but not motivated at all?
Is your physical health ok? Is your mental health ok? Is there something you are telling yourself that is not true?
Tarucho··on New Zealand imposes lifetime ban on youth buying cigarettes
Marijuana lobbists 1 vs Tobacco lobbists 0. Health be damned (in either case)
Tarucho··on The mid in fake midcentury modern
Because is cheaper
Tarucho··on Silicon Valley layoffs aren’t a cost-cutting measure. They’re a culture reset
I guess it came as childish because that´s the way those perks were given to us by management. In fact the head of a big studio (around 800 people) I worked on refered to these perks in private as "glitter".
Tarucho··on Why Does Nobody Want to Learn Java in 2022?
Because languages are chosen because of fashion.
Tarucho··on Ask HN: How to avoid being a pragmatic programmer?
Because what gets built is the knowledge of the system. The CRUD part is an implementation detail.
Tarucho··on Yak Shaving: A Short Lesson on Staying Focused (2018)
>At the time of writing this, this "article" is #1 on HN default sort. It's an incredibly short, and fluffy post (self reported as a 3 minute read), with little more substance than an urban dictionary listing. I'm baffled.

The magic is in the Ren & Stimpy reference.

Tarucho··on Is engineering management bullshit?
In my experience Engineering management is essential. But most EM management sucks. Why?

Because in our industry management has no legal accountability. Nobody dies if a feature is half-assed. If the feature sucks they just create a ticket and assign it to a dev.

And because of that tech management has always been crowded with bullshit artists who promote other bullshit artists like them (which they have to, if not they would get exposed). And the story repeats over and over again.

Tarucho··on The Timeless Way of Programming
Out of curiosity, does it pay well? I was told that this kind of industrial/architectural design work pays really well.
Tarucho··on Delphi still exists and is actively developed
In the 90´s, early 00s, when it was used for troyans and malware a lot.
Tarucho··on Ask HN: Why am I always stuck working on legacy software
Maybe you are better than your coworkers at maintaining code.
Tarucho··on Ask HN: Any great books about technical writing?
Thanks!
Tarucho··on Ask HN: Is attitude more important than knowledge?
Find a successful entrepreneur. Make him/her your mentor.
Tarucho··on Ask HN: Why is everything in JavaScript changing so fast?
In FE dev your primary business is building a competitive user experience in the browser, and browser and related techs are constantly changing to enable better ones.

In BE dev, unless you are working at scale, your primary business is to code business logic which also changes but doesnt require much tech churn.
