Tarsul··on AI, but at What Cost? Breakdown of AI's Carbon Footprint
yeah but we don't have time to analyse this for years and years while upping our power consumption. In the end we consume too much dirty power and have to change this, and quickly. AI is worth nothing if the world is burning.
Tarsul··on Mufasa's 'Bye Bye' shows how Disney villain songs went wrong
wait until you see The Way to El Dorado, even better.
Tarsul··on Meta Wants More AI Bots on Facebook and Instagram
Did you get bored of your AI friends?
Tarsul··on I'm trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
yeah that's the story that I read a lot. But it doesn't make sense. E.g. I don't use Twitter because it's just a shitshow (e.g. even before Musk took over). Of course the algorithm from Twitter doesn't see it like that because it never analyzed me. It only analyzes those who are there not those who are not there. Thus, there's a hole in their algorithm. Or in other words: It's a short-termin optimizing algo (for those who are already there), not a long-term optimizer (long-term user growth).
Tarsul··on Trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
I stil don't understand why none of these sites counts downvotes for their algorithm. Look at HN which does; the best comments are at the top which means that the user sees the more interesting posts first. And troll posts would never rise to the top. There's a lot of tinkering that could provide which is the best up/downvotes-algorithm but imo it simply does not work without downvoting. E.g. Tiktok allows a lot of options to downrank things that you do not like, meaning the user who curates his own feed gets a stream of posts that are more aligned with what he wants than anywhere else. And that's why TikTok won.
Tarsul··on The NBA's Problem Is Economics, Not Basketball
Personally, I have a different problem: Too many stars are hurt during the playoffs (and the season as well, but not as important). Which means that it's just sad and I have less reason to watch because in the end it mostly comes down to which teams are healthiest the most. (e.g. look at which teams Boston played last playoffs and what happened to the stars of their opponents...)

Also, crypto and gambling ads annoy as well.

Tarsul··on Amid cuts to basic research, New Zealand scraps all support for social sciences
Love your use of ~ in "~agree". Such a nice shortcut. Might steal that :D
Tarsul··on Congo gov. says it's 'on alert' over mystery flu-like disease that killed dozens
the crazy part was that this was a phenomen in many countries. What does this say? That it's human nature? Or that our culture is just too damn similar? I don't know but worth some studies for sure ;)
Tarsul··on Chocolate intake and risk of type 2 diabetes: prospective cohort studies
Dark chocolate cannot have more sugar than 100% minus how much cacao is inside. And usually if we're talking dark chocolate then we're talking 60%+ chocolate. My personal suggestion is to go for nothing less than 80-85% chocolate, which certainly does not trigger my sugar addiction (meaning it suffices to eat one or two pieces); even more it appears to reduce my appetite (similar to tea). And also makes me feel happy (there are articles about these effects, but I don't know how good the studies behind it are, but certainly worth a mention!). Truly a gift.
Tarsul··on A unified account of why optimism declines in childhood
Here's the abstract: Optimism is linked to a range of positive social and cognitive outcomes across development. Yet decades of work in psychological science has revealed that optimism declines throughout early childhood. Despite this well-documented decline, there is no agreed-upon theory that accounts for developmental changes in optimism. In this Perspective, we synthesize cognitive, computational, social and neural evidence and discuss three candidate mechanisms that might underlie declines in optimism with age: learning from experience, changing theories of success and wishful thinking, and shifts in valenced learning biases. We argue that declining optimism across childhood is best characterized by an account that integrates these theories. Specifically, we suggest that environmental factors impact the pace at which children’s theories and valenced learning biases change with age, and consequently the rate at which their optimism declines. This account suggests that optimism should be conceptualized as an adaptive bias that signals the nature of one’s environment and leads to specific recommendations for future lines of enquiry
Tarsul··on Europe is under attack from Russia. Why isn't it fighting back?
Spending is only useful if you spend it on useful stuff. Input vs. Output. If the output is just being destroyed (like munition), then all your inputs go basically to waste.

Nonetheless, if your only real problem is that people don't have enough money to spend, then putting people in factories where they earn money can help. However, there are better ways to do this (e.g. just give them money or even better let them produce stuff that is needed/wanted).

Nonetheless, if you can't defend yourself, even the best economy is worth nothing. Well, nothing to yourself. Maybe something to your new masters.

Tarsul··on Journalism's fight for survival in a postliterate democracy
wrt money: It appears facebook and google profited, like, imeasurably through serving or linking to news. How come news media itself gets so little of those monetary benefits? That's a huge problem that hasn't been adressed since governments have been asleep at the wheel for 20 years.
Tarsul··on German coalition government collapses
Because Europe cannot put trust in US help for Ukraine. Thus, Germany has to do more. (and they can only do more if they spend money and the [now ex-]finance minister does not want to) Also, if the US raises its tariffs wrt to Europe, then the German economy is in even more trouble.
Tarsul··on For the strongest disc golf throws, it's all in the thumbs
I've seen the olympic women disc throwing event and it was quite astonishing that they had so many different body types (tall athletic gym type, "fat" strong, rather gymnasty etc.). And of course their results were all within a range of each other. Although disc golf is not quite the same, I think it is similar in that there's probably not (yet) a solved technique that's better than every other :)
Tarsul··on World conker champion found with steel chestnut, cleared of cheating

Tarsul··on Germany outfitted half a million balconies with solar panels
yeah it's nice but if you rent, most owners forbid putting it on the railing (e.g. because it could fall down).
Tarsul··on Do AI companies work?
That's Netflix's revenue for a single quarter, not year. (nonetheless, your point is relevant)
Tarsul··on The Paradox of the Distance Runner
There are quite a few comments here about people who don't really enjoy running (but do it anyway). In my case I only enjoyed running in company. That is, until I found out how to run slow. If you don't strain yourself (especially the first few kilometers), you will have a much easier time to "ease in". Running becomes less of a burden and more of a joyful activity. Best to leave the watch at home as well :)

Tarsul··on UK public washing their clothes too often, says major laundry brand
The fascinating thing about showering is that there are quite a lot of ways to reduce your consumption of heating or water. E.g.:

- shower less often (e.g. to have one day every 10 days without showering means saving 10%!)

- shower with cold(er) water

- shower a minute or two shorter (also please stop showering in the middle for the soap)

- use a different sprinkler head that uses less water or don't crank up the tap as much

well, at least I find it fascinating...

Tarsul··on UK public washing their clothes too often, says major laundry brand
yeah you're on to something. What I would want as first and reasonable step is to talk about absolute numbers of CO2 per person(/state/company/whatever). Only then talking about reducing (e.g. in percentages) does make sense. Instead we have all the campaigns about this or that that don't really adress the general issue that it's all about _absolute_ counts of e.g. CO2 (or in this case microplastic).

But I want to give the article some slack: They basically said that in the UK the number of wash loads increased by nearly 10% without any positive effect (my interpretation); thus we may reduce our amount of wash loads by at least as much again. Also helps with the bills.

Tarsul··on Leaked internal documents from a Kremlin-controlled propaganda center
if the most common social media platforms (e.g. facebook, twitter) would count downvotes (does not have to be 1-1), then the most outrageous posts would not get to the top. Pretty easy actually. Also, I do not believe that "rage" really makes a platform better in the long term (or necessarily more profitable).

Of course that is only one aspect but it would help a lot wrt online culture and propaganda.

Tarsul··on New tech can make air-conditioning less harmful to the planet
The framing should be that CO2 emissions destroy the very foundations of our life.
Tarsul··on The Death of the Magazine
Others already chipped in the obvious arguments (onlinereading, other hobbies). I want to talk about a successful magazine instead: Retro Gamer UK. It's still alive and kicking and well worth a read. It started as an "also-ran" between all other gaming magazines from the publisher but now it's the best running and one of the only ones left. Why is that? Of course because retro gamers grew up reading those magazines and love to do it again. But also because the articles are really great. Why? Because they interview the developers and research the topics (games) quite well. And the developers also have no worries to talk about stuff that didn't work out (they don't really have to sell the game or their extinct studio anymore). And of course with these "scopes" (and the retro gaming niche) they make a type of content that is quite difficult to find online. Much easier to just read the magazine (of course an online/PDF version exists as well...).

Another advantage is that the content of an issue of the magazine doesn't really get old.

Tarsul··on US targets trade loophole used by ecommerce groups Temu and Shein
Temu and Shein do use loopholes in Europe/Germany, at least in Germany the reporting (and politicians lamenting) on such has increased recently so there will probably be some rule changes, most probably regarding the 150 euro minimum for customs duties.

https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/temu-shein-spd...

Tarsul··on EU competitiveness: Looking ahead [pdf]
I've read most of the report and the following passages stand out: "[securitisation] could also act as a substitute for lack of capital market integration by allowing banks to package loans originating in different Member States into standardised and tradeable assets that can be purchased also by non-bank investors."

sounds a lot like what went wrong in 2008 with credit default swaps but hey, the devil would be in the details.

For hacker news most relevant would be the part at the end: "The EU should also enable the use of AI-powered software and machine-processed data to lower compliance and administrative costs for SMEs. Measures should include requiring harmonised reporting templates, de minimis reporting thresholds, and centralised reporting requirements using one multilingual interface."

Yes, lets be honest here: bureaucracy and bad IT systems are responsible for a lot of bullshit jobs. Improving this would be nice.

What I also found interesting was the part that said that because in Europe pensions are not invested [a lot] in the stock market, this means that European companies have less money to put into Research and Development compared to US and UK. And that's one of the reasons why the report says the EU needs 800 billion per year to stay competetive (4,7% of GDP! Marshall plan was 2%! Not my numbers, those are also in the report).

Tarsul··on Ex-Goldman Sachs MD betting his career that climate change to upend real estate
climate change certainly will (and does already) impact real estate. But shouldn't remote work change the real estate markets much more & sooner in that new office buildings are not really worth it to build anymore and thus housing should find a new building boom? ....dunno how long nimbys can forestall this.. opinions?
Tarsul··on The Hindenburg’s Interior
Yes. I mean one just has to look at the last picture of the article with the Hindenburg burning. Not even the best propagandist could save this disaster.
Tarsul··on CrowdStrike will be liable for damages in France, based on the OVH precedent
what if the fine was giving up some shares to the government? With such a rule, after enough fines, the company would basically automatically become a public company.
Tarsul··on A rock that might hold the oldest form of complex life on Earth
I think it's more annoying when the quote is (more or less) directly before the actual same text (like here). As such, it has no helpful function for the normal reader - it's only annoying (but might help the skim reader or rather only the "scroller" who doesn't really read). Whereas in magazines it was that you opened the page and looked at those few quotes and decided whether you wanted to read the text, in that way the quotes are not really annoying imo.
