Tarball10··on Privacy focused platform Skiff is joining Notion, Skiff to be sunset
That's a similar line of thought I followed when migrating away from Gmail last year.

I was considering Skiff or Fastmail. Skiff was just over a year old with over $10 million in VC funding. Fastmail is 20+ years old and is funded by their own subscription fees.

I was concerned Skiff would be looking for a buyer eventually and things would change for the worse. Definitely didn't expect a full shutdown though.

The cheap homebuilders around here (midwest) are still putting standard 80% efficiency gas furnaces which draw interior air in brand new homes.

Tarball10··on Harnessing heat from wastewater
Why is it cheaper to have one shift work on a road project that takes months, compared to three shifts working around the clock making the project take 1/3rd of the time? I've always vaguely wondered that when driving through construction zones that are seemingly devoid of workers most of the time.

I assume the workers are paid hourly, so wouldn't the cost be the same? Are second and third shifts more costly?

Tarball10··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
This is only tangentially related, but I'm curious how other companies typically balance their endpoint management and security software with developer productivity.

The company I work for is now running 5+ background services on their developer laptops, both Mac and Windows. Endpoint management, priviledge escalation interception, TLS interception and inspection, anti-malware, and VPN clients.

This combination heavily impacts performance. You can see these services chewing up CPU and I/O performance while doing anything on the machines, and developers have complained about random lockups and hitches.

I understand security is necessary, especially with the increase in things like ransomware and IP theft, but have other companies found better ways to provide this security without impacting developer productivity as much?

Kind of a edge case, but we were attempting to migrate from Docker to Podman, and found running x86 container images in Podman Desktop on M-series Macs to be unacceptably slow. Docker Desktop supports Rosetta 2 virtualization which performs fine, but Podman Desktop does not.

Tarball10··on Live near your friends
Referring to other people as "townies/normies" seems like you're already looking down on them and not wanting to make any effort in getting along with them.
Tarball10··on Live near your friends
It might be healthy to socialize with people who don't share your music, food, memes, and lifestyle (values perhaps being the exception where you'd still need to align). Living in a bubble and interacting only with people exactly like you seems pretty limiting. There's no reason you can't be friendly with people that live very different lives, but your phrasing makes it sound like you're not even giving them a chance. Perhaps you have more in common than you'd think!

I assumed the long essays were for SEO (inflates the amount of cooking-related keywords). Which would make it kind of ironic that another Google product is now stripping the SEO content back out.
Tarball10··on Amazon Cuts Dozens of House Brands as It Battles Costs, Regulators
Except it's terrible for that (if you care about the condition of your books) because they did away with their book-specific packaging, and now just toss books in a box or bubble mailer with no protection. The majority of the time they arrive banged up. You may as well buy them second-hand for cheaper.
Tarball10··on Damaging results of mandated return to the office: it’s worse than we thought
You can also sit out on your porch or deck in the morning before work with a cup of coffee and a podcast, and meditate, relax, or whatever you like to do to get ready for work.

I've heard managers try to spin a commute as a good thing, giving you transition time between work and home, but it always comes off to me as corporate BS and nothing you can't also do at home without dealing with traffic or public transit.

Tarball10··on To save money on insurance, drivers agree to intrusive monitoring technology
I find it dubious that people who get good scores on these telematics are actually better drivers or less likely to cause accidents.

I've been stuck behind people doing 40 mph on the entrance ramp trying to merge into a 70 mph interstate. It's terrifying. They get a great rating for their leisurely acceleration, while vehicles on the interstate have to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid them.

What does refusing to use the rear view camera have to do with data collection? Those were added because kids were getting run over and killed by reversing vehicles. It seems irresponsible to not check it (along with all the other normal checks you do when reversing).
Tarball10··on Remote work brings hidden penalty for young professionals, study says
You can absolutely do better than "moderately competent junior" from online learning. I feel like you're ignoring huge swaths of high-quality technical education that is available online. Not to mention the numerous open-source projects you can learn from and contribute to, which are essentially "fully remote" distributed teams that have been working effectively for years. The larger open-source projects can also be great for networking through their forums/chat rooms/online discussions. Those "randos" are building software that is literally the underlying infrastructure of almost all commercial software being built today.

And, anecdotally, a lot of software jobs are building generic CRUD apps, and a lot of "senior colleagues" are not necessarily great teachers, or even great developers. In scenarios like those, you can do a lot better teaching yourself online with lessons or learning/contributing to the aforementioned open-source projects. It's not just about in-person vs online, but the quality of the team/project you're learning from.

Tarball10··on AT&T Wireless traffic shaping apparently making some websites unusable
It's definitely odd that you're getting routed across the country to an east coast pop. Ideally in your location you'd be routed to a west or central pop. Perhaps a bad combination of Cloudfront getting geolocation wrong for your IP range, and poor performance of at&t's network for that specific source-destination combination.
Tarball10··on AT&T Wireless traffic shaping apparently making some websites unusable
This appears to load fine for me on both AT&T fiber and AT&T cellular. It looks like all content on that site is being loaded from Cloudflare, so I'm curious if those users would be having issues with other Cloudflare protected sites as well?
Tarball10··on AT&T Wireless traffic shaping apparently making some websites unusable
AT&T uses different APNs for regular phone plans and data-only hotspot plans. It's very possible that the phone traffic is being routed completely differently than the hotspot traffic, with congestion at a peering point occurring on the hotspot. AT&T tends to be known for having poor/congested peering.

You could try changing the DNS server on your hotspot to a different public resolver like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8. If CloudFront is using DNS based geolocation to route you to the nearest data center, a different DNS server may get you routed around the issue to a different data center.

Tarball10··on There's something off about LED bulbs
Yeah there's not much you could personally do, other than maybe report it to the California Energy Commission. Bulbs need to be lab tested and the results submitted to the CEC, but I'm not sure how the lifespan testing is actually done, how accurate it is, or how easily it could be manipulated.
Tarball10··on There's something off about LED bulbs
> Light source in combination with specified control shall provide “reduced flicker operation” when tested at full light output as specified in JA10, where reduced flicker operation is defined as having percent amplitude modulation (percent flicker) less than 30 percent at frequencies less than 200Hz.

https://energycodeace.com/site/custom/public/reference-ace-2...

Tarball10··on There's something off about LED bulbs
California's JA8 certification requires LED bulbs to meet specific criteria related to efficiency, lifespan, and light quality.

- Efficiency >= 45 lumens per watt

- CRI >= 90

- R9 Color Rendering value >= 50

- Rated life >= 15000 hours

- Minimum dimming level <= 10%

- Flicker <= 30%

Theoretically if a bulb is listed as JA8 compliant (and the certification isn't fake) you know it at least meets these thresholds.

Not an issue since COVID. Most hotels don't do any cleaning during your stay anymore unless you specifically request it or your stay is over a week.
