TN1ck··on Photoshop’s journey to the web
This is what Figma is doing for their main UI, they reimplemented everything [1]

TN1ck··on The fig is an ecological marvel
I once built a scrolly-telling tool for designers and how figs are pollinated by these wasps is one of the stories [0] - if anybody would like to see a more graphical explanation.

TN1ck··on Amazon burns through workers so quickly, they'll run out of people to employ
Discussion of the same story but linked to a business insider article: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27524637
TN1ck··on The origin of Covid: Did people or nature open Pandora’s box?
Interesting point, similar to why the „Spanish flu“ is called like that even though it originated in the US.
TN1ck··on Show HN: Critter.Camera – Browser based motion detection and image capture
I love this! We once had this exact use case when there was a weasel ravaging in the kitchen - I downloaded some software and wired it up, but it was quite involved and the weasel sadly never showed up. I'll definitely use this the next time an animal finds its way here. Thanks for building it!
TN1ck··on A tool to create slides using Markdown easily for you
reveal.js is mostly aimed at creating slides using HTML, it has markdown support for writing the content, but this project seems to aim to create the entire presentation from markdown. I'd compare it to deckset - https://www.deckset.com/
TN1ck··on An ex-Googler’s guide to dev tools
Could be confused with "Vallah" though in this case: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Vallah
TN1ck··on Sketch: Proud to Build a Truly Native Mac App
Problem with that statement in this context is, that the web based solution Figma is actually more performant than the native Sketch.
TN1ck··on MobX 6
I used mobx-state-tree once with great success to implement efficient time travelling in an after effects like editor (to implement cmd+z/cmd+y). In the app, the state was updated multiple times per second and it still performed amazingly. I migrated this from mobx to mobx-state-tree and as both libraries work together seamlessly, the migration was super straight forward.
TN1ck··on Writing a book: is it worth it?
You could easily write some posts using this:

"Most common errors beginners make in Rust"

You're like the world expert on this.

"What people often get wrong about Rust"

Maybe there are common conceptual issues you spotted?

I'm not sure, but I would also imagine that you explained some things a few times in a more simple language, this could also be a great thing for a blog post. Instead of pointing them to a doc and explaining something about it, point them to your blog post then.

TN1ck··on Lenovo’s IdeaPad Slim 7 is a showcase for AMD’s exceptional new processor
I didn’t like the available offers, so I build my own shitty macOS app for that once, you can get it here: https://github.com/TN1ck/BrightnessChanger

Maybe it interests somebody.

TN1ck··on Optimal Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches
He just doesn't want to:

> If you were a machine learning model (or my wife), then you would tell me to just cut long rectangular strips along the long axis of the banana, but I’m not a sociopath

TN1ck··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
You are right, I was focused on the sustainability to feed all the people with that method. From the comments here it seems I was a bit too pessimistic and that there are some working examples, pretty exciting! Probably have to get back to my friends, after I looked through the material.
TN1ck··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
> While I wish organically growing food and conservation was the answer, its unfortunately not.

I recently had a lengthy discussion with some friends about their support of a solidary organic farm, where you pay a flat fee per month and get a box of whatever they have in that week. It's really hard for most people to understand that things like these are not sustainable and that it's purely a luxury product. Terms like "organic", "no GMO", "local" sound sustainable as you imagine going back to "the good old days", but it's just impossible to feed the world. Even after I quoted some facts about the needed land usage for organic, it was not really possible to convince them, that it's not sustainable.

If anybody has some good articles / studies about sustainable farming for the future, I would love to read them.

TN1ck··on Ask and Show HN: Ever coded for love? Willing to share?
I created https://pokemoncries.com because my girlfriend said she was really good at this as a child and I thought she would like it. She LOVED it. I polished it a bit more after this and posted it on reddit. I was amazed by the reactions/usages. People did “Pokémon cry challenges” on YouTube and it was quite viral in the Pokémon community. It has still good metrics and I updated it with the last generation. I just like that people have fun with it, I don’t think much more will come out of it.

I also created https://anagrams.io with her/for her, but that was mostly because she was so excited about it.

TN1ck··on Thai Database Leaks 8.3B Internet Records
It's a blog run by the Head of Trust & Safety of Cloudflare.
TN1ck··on Some scientists are serious about resurrecting zeppelins for cargo
My father worked at the company back then, designing the rudders. After that, he worked at Airbus until retirement. He always said that his coworkers at Cargolifter where really good engineers and much brighter on average than at Airbus, I always wonder where they might be if they didn't run out of funding / if they would have started the company today, where people are much more willing to invest into risky firms like these.
TN1ck··on Volkswagen’s plan to create a new car operating system
Just because you mentioned smart TVs - I had the same opinion, but was then blown away by my new LG OLED TV. It's so freaking fast with Netflix / Prime / YouTube and the UX is really well made (others are probably similar by now). For now I'm really happy with it and I can't see how the software will detoriate the TV so much in the future, that it I will hate the smart stuff.
TN1ck··on Notre-Dame came closer to collapsing than people knew
That story feels like scrolljacking because there is a mismatch from the scrolling and the background animation, it's a pretty free tool, so the designer decided to have easings like that. But you're still scrolling normally, the background is just animating. Normally we have html text boxes, where you feel that you're scrolling normally. Not in this story though.
TN1ck··on Notre-Dame came closer to collapsing than people knew
Currently the stuff is hosted in AWS Frankfurt, maybe that? Normally it should load pretty fast, the lazy loading is just an optimisation for the users. Yes, I have to admit, that loads pretty slow and the performance is not good. The problem is - I can try to make the performance as good as possible, designers still tend to want super high res textures / high fidelity 3d objects as they tend to put visual quality over performance. They have beefy machines and so don't really notice.
TN1ck··on Notre-Dame came closer to collapsing than people knew
I worked at a startup where the goal was to build a tool to create stories similar to NYT without needing a coder. We got quite far, and the articles done with it are already quite impressive. The task is really difficult though - performance is hard and responsiveness is super tricky. I’m proud that we didn’t end up with scrolljacking and it fells quite web native. https://info.graphics is the current soft launch and has some cool stories of anyone is interested.
TN1ck··on The new Dropbox
Oh wow, thanks for sharing that! Heavy animations are always tricky for productivity apps, as the increase in latency is bad for the day to day usage. This animation doesn't even look good and is just annoying after the third sight. For a productivity app, even a simple fade is sometimes too much. Really wonder how this could get approved.
TN1ck··on Self-distancing can help you make better decisions
I always imagine myself in a movie. What would I want the protagonist to do? Usually leads me to be more outgoing and not staying at home.
TN1ck··on Elixir, Phoenix, Absinthe, GraphQL, React, and Apollo
How's the integration of Apollo and TypeScript? Do you like the stack and would you recommend it?
TN1ck··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
You seem to be a rare case. I'm also a heavy user and got keys stuck a lot and actually broke two keys (I did nothing out of ordinary). I certainly like the feel of the butterfly switches, but they really are incredible frail.
TN1ck··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
It seems that in some places they already have one, in germany we have the Veggie-Burger TS https://www.mcdonalds.de/de/produkte/produkt-profil?productN.... I liked it when I tried.
TN1ck··on Ask HN: Go-to web stack today?
I am currently building a really complex application using Mobx, it’s great! Because of how it works you can do things that are impossible with redux - as the state would take too long to update with redux. I’m also using mobx-state-tree which is like the love child of mobx and redux. Amazing project as well, should be used if you want to have explicit model validation and immutability. I used it to build a history feature - that would have been almost impossible with vanilla mobx.
TN1ck··on The military’s obsession with energy drinks is contributing to PTSD
I have similar symptoms when drinking coffee - although they kind of emerged. I’m drinking decaf coffee now, which tastes good enough for me to create the joy of a morning cup. I’m asking myself though, if this effect of caffeine has other reasons.
TN1ck··on What Comes After the Roomba?
My dad just got one of those, but gave it back. You have to install a lot of wire for the lawnmower and even then it made problems (mowed the flowers). They have a weird garden though, so one take this with a grain of salt, but in my eyes the problem is definitely not solved. The hardware is great, but the software is too simple and does not use any CV or ML at all. Maybe I'm thinking too simple, but recognising grass and using SLAM shouldn't be that hard nowadays, so why don't they do it yet?
TN1ck··on Ask HN: What's your favorite elegant/beautiful algorithm?
This one came up a lot when I was researching the most efficient way to generate anagrams, but the numbers are growing way too fast. In the end, a frequency map and comparing the frequencies worked best. My use case is a bit special, as I'm creating anagram sentences, so a Trie or similar things wouldn't work. Check out https://anagrams.io if you're interested.
