TIPSIO··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
Yep, but you just named a single car.

If you look at any ICE vehicle model, a hybrid version is a super expensive upgrade.

Then demand is greater and they are harder to get — aka, marked up further by dealers.

Not really an argument. Hybrids are very expensive for majority of households to get.

TIPSIO··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
Super expensive.
TIPSIO··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
I kind of agree actually on your cost points. It’s still a luxury purchase. I am a bit more conservative of a saver but feel priced out and sadly went ICE.

If you qualify for the EV tax credit, I would argue the car is too expensive for your budget.

If you don’t qualify barely, a brand new ICE vehicle is going to last years and be cheaper. Is it really worth it to push budget?

If you way don’t qualify, definitely buying an EV. Also congrats on your income.

I'm not I agree if under threat from reddit, but I have noticed that Google has gotten significantly worse at showing me the correct relevant SO post I need. It usually takes a few tries.

There are even the same perfect/simple posts that I have visited tons of times over the years (small JS/CSS stuff I can never remember) that have disappeared or became near impossible to find via Google.

TIPSIO··on Americans Saved $1.1T Less Than Previously Thought from 2017-2022
Just FYI, you should definitely do your own research and your own planning for what's right for you / what your trusted financial advisor says. For example, this comment is completely wild financially to me to read for advice.

- You will live to see tomorrow.

- If you are high enough income, maxing 401k, an IRA, and an HSA every year is sadly still not enough.

- Location variance makes it really hard to find comparable intel online for a right path. Cost of living, job market / income levels, family situation and size, etc...

- Although sometimes extreme, the Bogglehead and FI/RE communities are great.

TIPSIO··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I could see this reinventing the living room.

Imagine in 5-10 years when this tech is perfected. It's a Saturday night. You, your spouse, and 3 kids each have one of these strapped to their face.

Why watch a movie on the couch facing a wall with a traditional flat TV format?

Certainly Disney or whoever will invent 3D interactive plays/games with stadium type immersive entertainment.

Living rooms will become circles like when people playing a board game.

TIPSIO··on Show HN: I built a website editor for TailwindCSS
> Why submit to HN?

For brutally honest feedback from stereotypical grumpy developers, clearly.

OP, stay positive and good luck. However, I agree and think this does need some improvement all around to be more useful.

Keep building and iterating. Congratulations on launch!

Unlimited 24/7 AI streamers on Twitch.

Unlimited 24/7 AI TV shows and movies (RIP Netflix, Hollywood).

Unlimited AI opinions about any topics.

Unlimited AI “grassroots” campaigns.

Unlimited AI propaganda from every country and military (perfectly chosen each time).

Unlimited AI comments, “friends”, and engagements on every social media platform for your posts.

The bigger struggle will be for discovering authenticity and filtering the content down.

Suddenly everyone’s frustration with their AI generated newsfeed and social feeds will become necessary filter tools to communicate and digest information.

Just my opinion. Fun to think about. Will watch “Her” this weekend again.

TIPSIO··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
If you scroll down to “Cinematic Experience” you’ll see a TV with two HomePod’s next to each other.

I do an identical setup with two Alexa Studio devices. The only difference being I have to use Fire TV and there’s actually a third Alexa Studio Base only device.

The setup is really good. It’s definitely not a replacement for surround sound. I argue it’s better sound than a Sound Bar though. It is even better for music.

The big thing though? As much as I love Apple stuff, everything and anything is always Alexa integrated. These synced speakers beep when my garage opens, vacuum, doors, connected to lights, my security system, fans, cameras, etc…

With Apple, your product selection is more limited or you need HomeBridge for ideal home automation. For me, I’d definitely rather have the Apple products but (hate or love it) Amazon is way more open and the only reason I settled for them.

Finally, I am not sure why and I would never personally do this setup, but if you look at the details of both Alexa Studio and HomePod “Home Theatre” setups, they both do not support connecting additionally to Echo’s or HomePod Mini’s for additional speakers. A fun option —- but equally not supported.

Bandwidth limitation of being wireless? Too few of people willing to do this?

TIPSIO··on CPSC warns consumers to stop using male-to-male extension cords sold on Amazon
Really interesting...

What are people doing with their lights where this would ever come up though?

Edit: From reddit, a use case is found [1]:

> They’re actually used my law enforcement whenever they do a raid and seize a computer. If they turn the computer off, they’ll have to try and get past a password. And if the hard drive is encrypted, they’re basically SOL.

> This can be a real issue for things like drug dealers or CP busts, where they need to transport the computer for analysis, but can’t turn it off. So they roll in a specially designed power bank, plug it into the computer’s power strip, then unplug the power strip from the wall. The power bank keeps the strip hot while they transport it.

I wonder if it will ever make sense for GitHub to have like an auto PR free-for-all wiki.md file that people could run wild with.
TIPSIO··on Hacktoberfest 2022
Ooh! That’s a great idea. I think some sort of model to encourage helping of others carries weight.
TIPSIO··on Hacktoberfest 2022
Everyone starts somewhere though.

What alternatives would you suggest to introducing beginner developers to open source?

For many, getting the smallest update on a big project (although annoying to maintainers) is a huge and very motivating accomplishment.

TIPSIO··on Open Props: Tailwind Alternative from Chrome Dev Team
This is generally how I have been using CSS with my own custom framework.

The benefit for me of having everything basically be variables is you can quickly modify a site to look like a different one to save time.

I also have, which I think the Chrome people should offer with this, a visual settings editor on the front end for swapping/tweaking styles in real-time.

TIPSIO··on 1Password delisting forum posts critical of their new Electron based 1Password 8
For desktop... it's definitely kind a bit more of a frustrating experience. I can definitely elaborate but the gist is it is just more painful / slower to get to passwords. I for the first time ever, installed their Chrome extension.

For mobile... it's incredibly fast. I have never had an app scan my face and unlock. It's worth shouting out those devs.

TIPSIO··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
Your comment made me think of the scene in the first Star Trek movie where all the little Spock children are in an emotionless hole being programmed with math and philosophy.

Not saying you are wrong or right, but for many kids having an adult who simply cares is worth infinitely more than any amount of efficiencies or base material.

TIPSIO··on Amazon’s Roomba deal is about mapping your home
I have the latest and greatest Roborock instead for my house ($$$).

What’s cool, privacy stuff aside, I can remote control navigate my house with its camera.

So I think it makes sense for Roomba to be part of Amazon’s Ring home security most.

Way more practical than that giant dumb robot thing they made called Astro.

Eventually using sensors to check for floods, motion, oddities, room temperature, etc… all while vacuuming on routine.

TIPSIO··on I regret my website redesign
It's really not that simple IMO.

If you look at the earlier mockups, they were just as good if not better. I also think they chose the wrong logo from the earlier mocks.

If you are smaller team/org/business, I'd highly recommend just move as quickly as possible with the agency. Less opportunity for scope creep from them and let the creatives rock and roll. They will, without a doubt, want the project done as fast as possible. They will also produce the same work in 1 vs vs 2 vs vs 3 months.

If you are bigger team/org/business, usually you are buying the "process" or "experience". So it's all mute and a team thing.

If you are looking for both, you'll fail like they did here.

TIPSIO··on I regret my website redesign
Except the name of the game for agencies is to book a big expensive project and farm it out to entry level employees (dev and designers) with just enough supervision to be better.

Then have a fun enough office to try and keep people around in an extremely high turn over industry.

It is what almost everyone is doing unfortunately who gets big enough to carry a team.

The best designers and developers also don't tend to want to do contract work like this.

TIPSIO··on Show HN: I made a Cloudflare Worker that injects OpenGraph data into a React SPA
Great job!

> Before you tell me to use Next.js, I know. But I think Cloudflare Workers are really cool!

It is really cool. I like to think sometimes there's no right way to do things so long it works for you.

For example, imagine an org/biz with a slow or busy dev team. Meta tags and SEO are constantly updating, pixels need to be dropped by marketing, stuff needs to be injected into the head, etc... This allows them to do so independently at a lower level.

Obviously the trade-off is this opens up to breaking things. Or, I'm not sure why they wouldn't use a Tag manager, but I am just saying out there this probably makes sense for someone.

> const body = text.replace(PLACEHOLDER, html);

I really need to learn Typescript... but I think this is where you update. This could break/timeout if the page is gigantic. A faster strategy would be to use their HTML Rewriter. [1]
