SulfurHexaFluri··on E Ink has developed a 2nd generation Advanced Color E-Paper
You can get 7" e paper displays for about the same cost as an rpi from waveshare and similar.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week (2016)
Its usually when there is a fundamental difference between ideas where no compromise can be made. For example, I think cities should ban personal car use while others think this is a horrible idea. We could go on and on repeating these same conversations but its not particularly useful or interesting.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week (2016)
I imagine the problem is no one could possibly agree on what politics is so you will have endless bikeshedding over if something classifies as politics.

Does a post on climate change count?

Does a post on city design and public transport count?

SulfurHexaFluri··on The State of IPv6 support on the Tor network
I wonder who is actually hosting tor exit nodes. I doubt anyone is hosting them on their home network since that would be asking to be blocked from every website at the least.

I have considered running a relay node but I'm not even sure how safe that is.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Apple M1 Assembly Language Hello World
How do you actually load / run this code without an OS? I'm guessing its the same way something like grub gets run?
SulfurHexaFluri··on Testosterone levels show steady decrease among young US men
They are normal weight but often very unfit.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Testosterone levels show steady decrease among young US men
Its also very likely that this all matches up with the creation and then banning of leaded fuels in cars.

This matches my feelings. I'm Australian and id say the average person is overweight but not very overweight. I don't know how common this is in the US but you see those photos of people in Walmart with fat hanging over both sides of the scooter and its something I don't think I have ever seen in Australia.

Once you start tracking the energy usage of exercise with a smart watch or similar, you'll notice that even extended exercise consumes almost no energy compared to the energy used simply living. Doing an hour of heavy exercise only changes my total energy usage for the day by a fairly small % compared to no exercise.

Diet is clearly a much more important aspect for weight loss. Exercise has many other benefits though.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Facebook sues two Chrome extension devs for scraping user data
Malicious browser extensions are a very serious problem though. The user has almost no way to know if their data is being stolen.
SulfurHexaFluri··on BeagleV – An affordable RISC-V computer designed to run Linux
Probably. I had no idea such a thin existed
SulfurHexaFluri··on Apple removes first-party firewall exemption in macOS 11.2 beta 2
Its possible that they saw it as a purely positive move that would improve security on MacOS and then after seeing everyone's response they reevaluated its importance.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
There is nothing wrong with this on its own. The real flaw was not stripping the exif data. Although I guess sequential IDs did enable an easier attack on the real flaw.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Hiding execution of unsigned code in Windows system threads
Yep, the point of this post seems to be to get full access without turning off the safeties because that will trip anti cheat software.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Ask HN: How do we know Signal or Telegram don't store our data on their servers?
I thought that got shut down by the US government for being a scam.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Ask HN: How do we know Signal or Telegram don't store our data on their servers?
I just had a skim over the post and it seems to be saying that it allows them to process user data without the OS having access to it. This does nothing at all for letting me verify what is running on their server or that they are even using this SGX feature at all.

It protects signal from hackers or a malicious datacenter provider at best.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Ask HN: How do we know Signal or Telegram don't store our data on their servers?
The secret chats feature is almost useless. They only work on phones, only in direct messages and are not the default. I doubt 1% of telegram users use it.
SulfurHexaFluri··on BeagleV – An affordable RISC-V computer designed to run Linux
If you want sata then your best bet is probably the Intel NUC. Still fairly small but as powerful as your average laptop.
SulfurHexaFluri··on WRT54G History: The Router That Accidentally Went Open Source
You might not have a need for it but others do. It really sucks to buy a new game after work and see that you won't be able to play it that night because it has a 5 hour download time.
SulfurHexaFluri··on WRT54G History: The Router That Accidentally Went Open Source
Neither of those options push the user to buy a new router every few years.
SulfurHexaFluri··on WRT54G History: The Router That Accidentally Went Open Source
Products need to fail or become undesirable to use after 3 years so you buy a new one.
SulfurHexaFluri··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
Via a tor hidden service iirc. This would seriously limit how many users they can have
SulfurHexaFluri··on What Is Social Cooling?
The problem I see is that the US has some very serious and widespread flaws. The live and let live attitude doesn't push for resolution to these issues.

If we say for example the police system is not working as it should and many people are dying or being locked away unnecessarily, how do you fix this when the leaders of your country are unwilling to do anything. The only options you have make you one of those 'identity politics people'.

SulfurHexaFluri··on What Is Social Cooling?
I'm under 25 and I can say that I don't think people are publishing much publicly outside of the political nutcases. Everything is inside private IM groups / discord voice chats these days.
SulfurHexaFluri··on What Is Social Cooling?
I think facebook and twitter pushed too hard for people to post everything publicly under their real name. Now we are seeing a shift back to made up usernames and private publishing. I don't know many people who share anything publicly but we all share constantly in private IM groups.

For most sites I don't bother remembering a password. I just sign up every time I need to log in which keeps my accounts young enough that there isn't a significant backlog to trawl through and identify me.

SulfurHexaFluri··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
I'm not saying I'm entitled to a google account, but I do think I should be entitled to fair warning that I am being kicked off. Google should be required to send me notice so I can get my data out and on to a competing platform.

Like with rentals, they can deny me service at the start, but once they take me on to the platform, short of a gross abuse of the service, I should be entitled to a warning before the service is terminated.

SulfurHexaFluri··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
Its more that nothing they do can overcome the fact that everyone has blacklisted them. You can't run a site on the internet without having ISPs and DNS registers on your side at least. Even if they rehost somewhere else they will just be hit with the next level of blocks and have wasted the money rehosting.
SulfurHexaFluri··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
They are very similar. Both situations leave you in a situation where you are unable to respond quickly enough and can cause massive financial damage. Just because the situations are not identical does not mean they are not similar and that rules from one can't be moved over to the other.

I don't think google should be able to simply lock people out of their accounts and data without any notice for them to take their data out. I was hit by this personally when google docs locked on of the documents I was working on for school at a time I critically needed it. Their given reason was simply "tos violations" despite nothing in the document being a violation and they unlocked the document 2 days later.

SulfurHexaFluri··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
If the web browser was actually a replacement for apps there would be no apps in the app store because it would be easier and far cheaper to run a website.
SulfurHexaFluri··on EU Commission: ‘No longer acceptable’ for platforms to take key decisions alone
They also care about squashing competition which prevents many apps like real web browsers, game streaming and alternative stores which can not pay the 30% fee.

IMO its fair for the app store to remove whatever it wants but there needs to be an escape hatch where apps blocked by apple can be manually installed. Since the API apps have access to is secure, this should not be a significant issue.

Apps like Parlor may be full of ToS violating content but users should still be able to sideload the app and the government should be the one to shut them down if the content is illegal.
