SulfurHexaFluri··on Toyota's game-changing solid-state battery en route for 2021 debut
Apple seems to be moving away from trying to sell more iphones and instead in to getting iphone users to buy more kinds of things. You now have AirPods, the Apple Watch, and a million other things which each can last quite a while but add up to what would have been a new phone every year.

Is it possible to make a cable safe enough for people to be holding at 100kv?
SulfurHexaFluri··on Porting Firefox to Apple Silicon
I just checked again and the firefox one looks so close to the native right click that I can hardly tell the difference other than it not supporting dark mode
SulfurHexaFluri··on Show HN: Beeper – All Your Chats in One App
How is imessage so hard to reverse engineer that its easier to send someone a jailbroken iphone to use? Surely the protocol can't even change much since many users are stuck on old versions as its part of the OS.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Show HN: Beeper – All Your Chats in One App
Why would chat apps need to support old clients? If facebook pushes out an update almost every user will have it on day one and every user will 1 month on. They can just show an error banner to users who have automatic updates turned on.

I'm not even convinced they decided it was more profitable. The decision probably went something like this:

Manager: Our users want this feature

Developer: We can't add that because it will cause incompatibility with XMPP clients

Manager: This is the 50th feature that has been blocked by XMPP and hardly any of our users use it. Time to cut off support for it

SulfurHexaFluri··on Distributed search engines using BitTorrent and SQLite
POSIX certification is about as useful as a keyboard with a "windows 10 compatible" sticker. Useful for marketing purposes only.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Distributed search engines using BitTorrent and SQLite
It seemed to have a semi decent crawler and p2p system but it was beyond useless for searching. It was like using grep to search the internet. I just searched "youtube" and the first 10 pages would be random blogs that mention the word youtube instead of the actual website.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Linux Running on Apple M1
Macbooks almost never have seamless wifi experiences on linux. At best you will have to manually install a wifi blob and for the newer ones the advice is to just get a wifi usb.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Porting Firefox to Apple Silicon
I wonder if this means there will finally be a way to use things like spotify and netflix on ARM linux machines.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Porting Firefox to Apple Silicon
I'm using firefox on macos right now and I can't see what the issue is. The the menus show up in the main top bar like every other app. Am I missing something?
SulfurHexaFluri··on Capitol Attack Was Months in the Making on Facebook
Even his mid event video was the same. A quick "you need to go home" sandwiched between minutes of babel about how he thinks they are doing the right thing and that he loves them.
SulfurHexaFluri··on IPFS Support in Brave
Its basically the same as a torrent or a public key. You have to first trust the source of the IPFS hash but if you trust the hash you can trust the content downloaded with it.

If for example NYT tweeted an IPFS hash, you could trust the content was from them.

SulfurHexaFluri··on IPFS Support in Brave
Last time I checked you had to have a server updating the IPNS entry daily or it would expire. Is this still the case?
SulfurHexaFluri··on IPFS Support in Brave
The fork from blink was so long ago its pretty much irrelevant now. Google likely spends more dev hours on it than apple does on webkit these days.
SulfurHexaFluri··on IPFS Support in Brave
I wonder why Mozilla even bothers with these kinds of posts. I doubt a single person in the world cares about getting political opinions from their web browser so these kinds of posts just dirty their image.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Why do they still make car alarms? (2015)
The future is probably going to involve simply having all cameras on the streets look out for the numberplate as soon as its reported missing.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Parler’s de-platforming shows the exceptional power of cloud providers
The internet becomes more and more important each year. Before the internet had pictures it didn't matter if you got kicked off.

The main problem imo is that you simply can not get a website on the internet without using someone elses service, there are always more layer down that you can get kicked from until you reach the point where ISPs, and domain registers are blocking you.

The US needs to restore net neutrality to prevent these kinds of abuses from ISPs.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Parler’s de-platforming shows the exceptional power of cloud providers
Your last option is a tor hidden service which could only be shut down if the government is against you and even then it can be difficult.

I guess it does make your site inaccessible to regular users though.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Parler's home page is back online, but app still not in stores
They released a post saying they don't think there is any point blocking legal but nasty sites because their service is easily replaced. Its a lot easier to switch cdn than server host or get back in to the app store
SulfurHexaFluri··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
The variable naming thing seems like total bullshit but when I find a song I like too much I find it can be distracting. When I'm feeling most productive I hardly notice the music thats playing.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
I find it to be the reverse. A tap on my wrist is actually less distracting because I don't have to grab and unlock my phone to see what it is. Its just a quick flick of my eyes down to see if its important. The watch also uses different taps for different kinds of messages so sometimes I know without even looking if I should bother.

Previously I would have pulled my phone out of my pocket to look every time it vibrated. Its also a super quick swipe and tap to turn on do not disturb mode on the watch so you get no notifications or calls (there is an exemption list too I think)

SulfurHexaFluri··on The Buy Nothing Project
Facebook bans accounts with fake info. They are pretty good at it too. I assume they simply use the contact info the scraped and look for your name in your friends contact lists.
SulfurHexaFluri··on The Buy Nothing Project
I have found it almost pointless to try listing stuff for less than $50 because you get loads of non committal people messaging you and then not picking up the item. I tend to just list stuff for a price and then accept any counter offer requested. Filters out the hoarders and selects only the ones who actually want it.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C: study from 2018
I have never heard of Cardano and Ethereum seemed to market itself as a way to run the internet and government inside of blockchain while the reality was it was never used for anything but speculative investment.

Cryptos have basically burned the idea and the general public will probably not care of any future solution since all of the previous ones were scams or not very useful.

These cryptos all promise the world and deliver nothing.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C: study from 2018
Its technically very simple but politically very difficult. The point I am making is that the power usage is not directly tied to transactions. Not making a transaction on the blockchain will not save X watts because that power is burned regardless of what transactions are going through.

An example would be that me not driving to the beach saves some fuel but bitcoin is just a train constantly driving to the beach and back regardless of how much I use it. You could grab the number of trips and the power usage and calculate a power usage per trip but its not an entirely useful metric since the power usage does not scale up as more people use the service.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C: study from 2018
I don't have proof for the larger community but I was very interested in bitcoin at 2012-2015 and it really did seem like it was going to be a real alternative, all the big companies were starting to accept bitcoin but now its all gone.

Almost nowhere accepts bitcoin anymore because they failed to solve the issue that transactions cost on the level of dollars to process so its only useful as a speculative investment and not a practical currency.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C: study from 2018
The true statement is "We consumed this amount of power and were able to process this amount of transactions" but the power usage does not scale with transactions. You could increase the block size and get far more transactions without changing the power usage because the power is not used to process transactions.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Bonsai in an encapsulated environmental system: Paludarium Yasutoshi
This is probably the most interesting thing I have seen in a long time. This just seems like something that simply shouldn't be possible. I tried looking up more info but most of the results are this guy.

Does anyone know if it really is as simple as putting some dirt and water in a pot or are there more specific requirements for it to work?

SulfurHexaFluri··on E Ink has developed a 2nd generation Advanced Color E-Paper
Its difficult to find the details on this because these companies are so secretive, but from everything I have seen, the e paper technology we have is completely useless for anything but displaying mostly static content. The refresh time is insanely slow so simply typing text or scrolling a page would be almost impossible.

Also almost all of the full color eink screens I have been able to find details on are actually just normal TFT LCD displays with some matte film over the top. The core eink tech seems to be fairly easily changed to get 3 colours at the cost of 15 second refresh times but any more colurs seems unlikely.
