Sugimot0··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
This!! Most speakers/soundbars suck, and if you don't have a center channel in your sound system, voices will wash out with the background noise/music since the speaker (as in person speaking) is usually the focus of the shot and mostly audible in the center channel.

There's supposed to be sound engineers on every show/movie to make sure it sounds good but the gap lies between your audio system and the reference systems they use. A good analogy is the infamous Game of Thrones battle that was too dark. They edited that episode on reference grade monitors where you could see what was happening, but the average lower end tv and viewing environment couldn't translate the same black levels and details that the editor's had seen when they worked those scenes (they were also intemtionally edited to look dark and chaotic on the reference grade monitors*, which added to the problem)

That being said I still use cc with a lot of content. I think it would be less prevalent though if it were not for the gaping holes in most audio setups.

Sugimot0··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
Unless 'peer review' elicits negative feelings in the target audience it seems like a pretty good name. It relates to the core concept, it's respectable and easily memorable. Seems like good branding but I'm no expert, nor am I the target audience.

To toss a few names in the hat, off the top of my head: - openresearch - colab - openjournal - stud.io

Probably collect a few ideas and run a small survey for the initial audience

On the commandline using sdcv[0] with a generate stardict from wiktionary[1] is a great combo.

Sugimot0··on 35M Hot Dogs: Benchmarking Caddy vs. Nginx
I'd love to see a comparison like this for caddy and pingora once pingora is open sourced. Here's the HN link for the announcement. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32836661
Sugimot0··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
If you can find the "Human Planet" series that was great, but it was removed from most services after a few scenes were discovered to be disingenuous. I would highly recommend it though.

Sugimot0··on We want to make Nix better
Just a heads up, the issue was likely grub, grub had a breaking change for certain EFI devices. You can check arch news etc for more info. I had to chroot and fix my laptop the other day cause it was stuck boot looping after I upgraded.
Sugimot0··on Upscayl – Free and Open Source AI Image Upscaler for Linux, macOS and Windows
I like video2x[1] for this, a nice simple CLI with lots of different options for different cases, (especially the anime upscalers) used it quite a bit, also played with realcugan-ncnn-vulkan[2] which has given me pretty great results.

Sugimot0··on FBI agent pleads guilty to wiping hard-drive containing exculpatory evidence
Had a feeling I would see Chomsky in the comments, this is a classic example of how intelligence agencies are a tool of the ruling class, history has shown they rarely ever bite the hand that feeds them, unless it's for self preservation.
Sugimot0··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
I had to scroll so far to see this comment! Glad to see someone mentioned r/ergomechkeyboards and even the lowpro discord! I was really surprised there wasn't more mention of either here since there's much more low-pro / minimal ergo designs out there.

I think anybody interested in a low pro, minimal, ergo design, with great build quality should checkout the corneish zen. I'm really happy I got in on the last round and I cant wait for my 3x5 to come in with LDSA caps and the new tactile sunset switches. Darryl at LowProKB is a mad scientist.

Sugimot0··on Will Bun JavaScript Take Node's Crown
One of the recent releases added partial express support, you might want to give it one more shot.

Sugimot0··on Glassdoor not so anonymous
Yeah it was odd finding out this was an NZ decision. I was under the impression that they were a bit ahead of the US on privacy.
Sugimot0··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
I use firefox because i can add things like treestyle tabs and tridactyl and also eliminate unnecessary parts ofvthe UI when i don't need them like the url, tab, and menu bar. I also don't have to worry about security and updates like I would with chrome.
Sugimot0··on The most satisfying checkbox
As an audiophile one of the most satisfying app sounds I've ever heard is busuu's 'completed a lesson' sound, the engineers really nailed that one. It's so gratifying to hear I almost consider it a reward, and I actively anticipate it once I finish a lesson.
Sugimot0··on E Ink Gallery 3
someone tag the go to open-source driver board person, and someone else tag the frame.work people so we can slap a display on one of those too. My eyeballs are ripe and ready for this transflective goodness.
Sugimot0··on The counterintuitive rise of Python in scientific computing (2020)
I feel like nim[0] should replace python as it matures, but I would be curious to hear others perspectives, since mine is mainly based on reading.

Sugimot0··on Windows needs a change in priorities
Also with package managers like Nix you can install older versions of a program along with that program's corresponding dependencies at the corresponding version and so on. It's not baked-in to unix but things like this are made easier on unix and I think that's where the sauce is.
Sugimot0··on Fish 3.4.0
I've been using fish for 2 years now and I pretty much live in the terminal. I would feel handicapped without it.

Just use fish and use shebangs `#!/bin/sh` (which should be in your scripts anyways) and you can keep writing/running POSIX scripts all day. I think it's the best option until nushell[0] is ready.

As an added bonus now that you don't use bash interactively you can substitute dash[1] and increase the speed of most POSIX scripts, win-win.

I'd also recommend zoxide[2], i feel like it's one more must have no matter what you do in the shell.

Sugimot0··on Near-native performance of any windows game through VFIO/KVM [video]
Maybe not the most convenient way to game on linux but it seems like a great option for non-proton games or if you might want to use microsoft game-pass on to game with a linux pc.

The same youtuber also runs a pretty well made test on latency[1] which appears to be so low it was imperceptible with the testing methods. There is also a very well put together guide that makes all the information very accessible and consumable for those curious enough to try it [2].

Sugimot0··on A tour to my Zettelkasten note clusters
It's lacking good support for mobile, but the mobile app is usable, and in active development. I use it daily with no issues. It mostly just lacks a no-frills setup for syncing notes on multiple devices, but they are developing a subscription for backup/sync hosted by them (I use syncthing, but others have used iCloud and google drive).

To build on the features mentioned there's also:

- A community marketplace for plugins and themes

- Simple customization and extensibility

- A builtin PDF viewer with highlighting and linking
