StudentStuff··on Life in China Is Getting Harder With High Prices
> Unchecked IP and currency abuse by China, and unfettered illegal immigration are also "not good for the USA or my fellow American."

Please cite how the USA has been negatively affected by IP abuse or China's monetary policy. It seems quite similar to our prior tangoes with Japanese cars & Taiwan's electronics imports to the USA.

At this juncture we have pushed China into economic stagnation, while slowing our own economic growth.

> unfettered illegal immigration are also "not good for the USA or my fellow American."

We're a country of immigrants, our current "legal" immigration system is only a few decades old. Prior to that it was a free for all with nearly open borders (and no passports/visas), which bolstered the US economy mightily during World War 1 & World War 2.

Open Borders is key to being open for business, our current policy is locking out millions of people that could turbocharge our economy.

> Are you actually trying to claim that CBP is deliberately killing children?

Yes, when you choose to act in a way that you know kills some children needlessly, you are killing children. God doesn't look the other way!

I did not care to dig into his first two sentences, but next time you see a comment like that, please ask them for citations and dissect what they said with your own citations.

We need to deal in fact, which requires a fair bit of effort to cite and write. Call out those poisoning the comments with vitrol and insanity, a harsh light reveals their lack of grounding in fact.

Citation for that last paragraph?

All I've seen is a shrinking coal industry leaving workers unpaid for their last month on the job[1], 25% tariffs slapped on our hardware imports [2] (causing a 30% drop in our sales) and kids being killed by Customs and Border Protection [3].

None of this is good for the USA or my fellow American

StudentStuff··on Bottled Water Is Sucking Florida Dry
How many CCFs of water (748 gallons) are you using? In Seattle the average is 4.3 CCFs a month of water use, and most of your bill isn't for potable water, but sewer.

Watering your lawn is likely $100+ of your bill, green lawns are expensive!

Amazon is deadset on abusing their workers as much as possible to make a buck.

Wether its the intern turning a spec into code, then getting verbally lashed for 3 hours for not "being creative", or demanding 50+ hour weeks out of engineers on Amazon's Payments team.

No one should be so scared that they work an extra 12hrs on Saturday and another 6 on Sunday, but that seems to be SOP for certain employees in some departments of Amazon :c

StudentStuff··on Ask HN: Fired from my first job – how do I talk about it during interviews?
Only volunteer your good references, and consider auditing your ex-employer by having a friend call HR asking about dates of employment, performance and references. Many states restrict what can be said about former employees, double check that what HR says is compliant with your local laws.

Tucows has been terrible in handling a client of mine's issues, their domain has no SPF or DKIM, and thus their email is unreliably making it to customer's inboxes.

If anyone has pointers on how to get a domain & email address that are both bought & hosted with Tucows up to snuff with the email security standards of yesteryear (SPF & DKIM), I would really appreciate it!

StudentStuff··on How Amazon Hooked America on Fast Delivery, Avoiding Responsibility for Crashes
Amazon is directly putting additional vehicles to the road as a fourth shipping carrier, where USPS, FedEx & UPS already run trucks through these neighborhoods.

If Amazon wanted, they could expand their use of existing infrastructure, namely USPS (which is legally obligated to service homes and businesses) rather than create redundant, poorly maintained secondary infrastructure.

Amazon's FBA program is entirely focused on paying as little as possible to get parcels delivered. There are no living wages, or properly maintained delivery vehicles to be had for the workers that carry Amazon's parcels.

StudentStuff··on iPhone 7 iCloud Lock
Did you buy the iPhone through a cell carrier? If so, ask them to reprint the bill where you originally bought it. This can be sent to Apple and they will remove the iCloud lock when provided with proof of purchase (ex-employees commonly leave unrecoverable iCloud locked iPhones).

StudentStuff··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
So long as they're spending most of their cash on maintaining out of tree patchesets for the Linux kernel, that is tens to hundreds of millions a year in wasted money on their part.

Eventually the community will write their own drivers (as has happened with Mali) and the respective vendor will have a reckoning internally (like what happened with AMD's GPU driver) whereby those advocating for wasting money on out of tree code leave the organization with egg on their face for bilking the company out of significant R&D cash.

It is very hard to claim that its worth it to develop a proprietary driver when a comparable performance driver already exists for your hardware in-tree. The in-tree driver will almost certainly be easier to use & break less often than out of tree code that the kernel devs don't think or care about breaking.

StudentStuff··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
Windows has had multiple breaking changes to the driver ABI between Windows XP and present. There is no "proper" futureproof driver ABI, otherwise there would be a major OS using one.
StudentStuff··on 10 Years SeL4: Still the Best, Still Getting Better
Userspace drivers permit upgrading the kernel to a certain point (depending on how kernel APIs change), but your forever trapped with the bugs and vulnerabilities in the userspace blobs.

Its a step forward in kernel upgradability, but it also takes the pressure off vendors like Qualcomm and ARM to upstream their patches. I hope the kernel continues making significant changes that break out of tree, proprietary drivers.

The harder it is for these players to act in bad faith, the sooner they'll collaborate with the kernel developers and mainline their code.

StudentStuff··on Democracy Voucher
Democracy Vouchers have been a game changer in Seattle. Lots of small campaigns that would've petered out earlier have persevered and been well funded due to community support enabled by this program.

Politicians are interacting with people they would've previously ignored, as now every voter in Seattle has $100 per year that they can invest in a candidate or candidates: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/candidate...

> An increasing number of businesses are legitimately intercepting encrypted traffic on their networks. It’s pretty much a necessity today.

StudentStuff··on America’s Farmers, Reeling from Floods, Face a New Problem: No Water
Hundred year old infrastructure is not the most sturdy, obviously this structure was past the end of its design life (leading to its failure).

Maintaining a structure doesn't prevent the concrete from spalling (as the chemical bonds that bind the concrete age and degrade), nor does it necessarily pick up on failing earthen tunnels in hard to inspect areas.

Many bridges across the country are going on 100 years old, and have a ~50 year design life. Structurally they are deficient, often undersized for the modes of traffic using them, and structural failure (which is very possible) would likely kill people. US infrastructure needs heavy investment, rather than the neglect it has seen for decades.

StudentStuff··on Apple in Advanced Talks to Buy Intel’s Smartphone-Modem Chip Business
IIRC that deal was Ericsson fabbing their LTE & 5G basestations on Intel's 10nm process, but Intel's 10nm process can't produce large working chips in volume (and likely never will), which has kneecapped Ericsson as a cellular vendor.

Company scrip has a long and nebulous history, its great for tethering your workers to the company town (and company store) while keeping them indebted and unable to leave: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_scrip
StudentStuff··on Amazon's Position on Unions (YouTube video)
This series of videos is pretty crummy, Amazon couldn't hire a decent actor (or was too cheap to do so), and proceeds to have their talking heads contradict themselves by saying they are neutral towards unions, but they will "boldy defend their direct relationship with employees" AKA they will fight unionization.

Another clip has "managers" (animated talking heads) calling unions thieves and crooks, followed by a quiz on which manager most closely reflects Amazon's position on unions.

The current worker <==> Amazon relationship is so imbalanced that workers feel they can't use the bathroom during their shift for fear of being fired.

Even the programmers here in Seattle are treated poorly, only "profitable" divisions get a breakroom stocked with cereal, but even those breakrooms were pretty threadbare compared to most other non-tech companies in Seattle.

StudentStuff··on Linux on STM32 Microcontrollers
The Cortex-M controllers just don't seem too competitive for networked applications or anything requiring complex code/IO.

The cost for a full fledged ARM board is quite close to a STM32 with some addons, making me think one would be better off with something like an OrangePi Zero: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32760774493.html
