StringyBob··on Google suspends some business with Huawei
Google have no choice but to comply with US law. This is now going to make a load of existing US owned (Huawei manufactured) devices less secure unless an exemption is agreed for things like software security updates.

Not only that, the ban encourages a long term move away from US-based tech as alternatives are needed within China. This new tech will ultimately be available worldwide, but no longer owned or controlled by US companies.

As someone from neither China or US, it seems crazy. It’s one thing to ban Huawei from your own markets for security concerns, but by making such a heavy handed ban on working with them, the US government seem to be making the US less secure short term, but also US companies will be less competitive and less influential in the world long term.

StringyBob··on Guardian records first operating profit since 1998
I’ve found this page https://www.adfontesmedia.com/ an interesting starting point to judge relative bias and accuracy of publications - although I’m sure even that site will be accused of bias.
StringyBob··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
It’s actually working well to curb my reddit addiction by making it harder to idly browse on the phone.
StringyBob··on The MOnSter 6502: transistor-scale replica of classic MOS 6502 microprocessor
And the latest generation of high end mobile phone system-on-chip is up in the 6-7 billion transistor range, so we can double that size again from 20 to 40 acres for whatever apple are in the middle of announcing for a new phone right about now...
StringyBob··on MH370 Was ‘Manipulated’ Off Course to Its End, Report Says
I'd assumed much better bandwidth is available for the a certain class of satellite (gbits a second via laser to downlink) [1], but for cost effective surveillance high altitude drones [2] would be the tool of choice to monitor cities, if not the world.

and sadly the UK government is doing it again via brexit - not just via the loss of input to galileo, but killing UK based space companies and research. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/23/uk_lords_tell_uk_go...

StringyBob··on Darpa invests $100M in a silicon compiler
Heading the opposite direction - at least for the bleeding edge 7nm/5nm/3nm ASICs you want in your next computer or smartphone.

Manufacturing costs (particularly fixed costs) are going up exponentially. We're getting stuck on economics before physics. You need to be able to sell 10million+ parts to cover your costs.

There's more opportunities if you don't need the best performance or lowest power and use an older manufacturing process node like 65nm.

StringyBob··on IBM bans USB, SD cards, flash drives and portable devices from every office
I've seen the 'USB ports get taped up for a visiting engineers computer' thing before - so I wonder what they do with a MacBookPro nowadays (there is no separate display or power connector!)
StringyBob··on Microsoft Turned Consumers Against the Skype Brand
Used to be the case that if a mac or Linux user connected, the call quality degraded for everyone on the call. Don't know if improved...

StringyBob··on Microsoft Turned Consumers Against the Skype Brand
Yes SfB's biggest problem is that it has skype in the name so people try to use it as an instant messenger.

It's ok for audio/video, but an abomination for instant messages - almost spitefully bad for text based communication due to the way it randomly redirects messages within a conversation to e.g. Outlook.

StringyBob··on An MSG Convert Visits the High Church of Umami
I assume lots of chefs (in high end restaurants) use MSG, but rightly think it could scare off some of their clientele.
StringyBob··on Spirit A319 at Boston, Jul 17th 2015, fumes on board, captain died 50 days later
So, could this kind of thing have caused the MH370 disappearance?

It's a stretch, but perhaps similar cockpit confusion caused by oxygen deprivation or ToCP poisoning (from a gas leak) could have been a reason to change direction (before passing out)?

StringyBob··on How Cambridge Analytica’s Facebook targeting model really worked
I like that analogy. I'll make it more tenuous with - "I took a copy of your album collection without your permission, ripped them to MP3, played them so much everyone is sick of them. but you've still got all the original CD's you don't even use, so no problem right?"

On this tangent, IP ownership for deep learning models is interesting - how to you prove (in court) someone has/hasn't copied model/stolen a training set? If you fed someone else's training/model into your system, how easy is it to prove? Will we see the equivalent of map 'trap streets' in trained CNN models?

StringyBob··on Addressing the recent attention focused on Strava and our global heatmap
Well I think the heatmap is the best thing from strava. I wish it was embedded/viewable in the strava ios app to to browse running routes - particularly when I'm in a new place. I've also discovered a load of footpaths near me just by browsing it on the website.
StringyBob··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases

zoom in a lot to enable the strava heatmap, and you can edit openstreetmap if you know what you are doing.

I wonder if the raw data can show any paths/areas missing from openstreetmap - would be interesting to align the datasets
StringyBob··on iPhone update for Meltdown-Spectre: before/after performance benchmarks
Is it possible that this benchmark has coincided with a battery that's just crossing the threshold of battery-throttling induced slowdown?

The low scores in the article are in a similar ballpark to my (slow) iphone 6 on ios 10.3.3 with a 3yr old battery - i.e. about half what they should be with a fresh battery.

StringyBob··on iPhone update for Meltdown-Spectre: before/after performance benchmarks
Just that I could be looking at a > 75% performance reduction on the same phone compared to when it was new due to the combo of battery degradation, security fixes and ios9 to ios11 general slow down.

I think that if they've disabled some cpu core features that might reduce the maximum power loading anyway and make the double whammy impact of security and battery related slowdown unnecessary.

StringyBob··on iPhone update for Meltdown-Spectre: before/after performance benchmarks
Wow. After ios 10.2.1 halved performance on my iphone 6 due to the battery issues, I next avoided 11.0 as I accepted responsiveness would be slower on the older iphone6 model.

Now if we want these security fixes that's another -40%... Yikes!

However, it looks like ios 11.2.2 and a new battery is still slightly faster than ios 10.3.3 and an old battery! (geekbench single/multi core score from article of 924/1616 vs my 844/1379)

StringyBob··on Julian Assange's stay in London embassy untenable, says Ecuador
That's kinda why I used the phrase 'my perception' - I don't want to make statements of fact about something this vague and political (I'm not in the US before anyone gets upset about my biases, and as for the stooge comment neither do I intend it as an anti-Russia slur). However, I'd be intrigued as to how the current US leadership would feel about an extradition request for Assange.
StringyBob··on Julian Assange's stay in London embassy untenable, says Ecuador
I've no idea of the truth of the original allegations, or his claims that he was set up, but since then it's quite impressive how he's managed to change my perception of him and wikileaks from 'champions of freedom-of-information / free speech' to 'russian government stooge' over the last few years.

StringyBob··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
I still use a 6, and have a replacement OEM battery on the shelf in front of me. I'll get apple to do it instead, just as long as they don't upgrade my phone to ios 11 at the same time... I don't want a slower OS just to gain the ability of it telling me one reason why it might be slow.
