StreetChief··on Cryptominer loses bid to force BC Hydro to provide it power
I was thinking more along the lines of my purchase price is x + y tax + -z tax. A return eventually isn't quite the same, but maybe it's effectively the same.
StreetChief··on Cryptominer loses bid to force BC Hydro to provide it power
Well I was thinking more along the lines of the price of a good is x, plus y taxes, reduced by -z tax. Subsidys might effectively be similar, but it won't be calculated the way "positive" taxes are.

The old comments are associated forever. I'm choosing to be more careful of my comments at the moment, but I may need to create a new account at some point to discuss things anonymously.

This is spot on stuff.

There are major strikes in Germany about Quality of Life issues right now. I think France might be having strikes too now, but I haven't investigated the one clip I saw.

StreetChief··on Ask HN: Startups Interviewing Like FAANG
Saying you are "transformational to [their] company" implies the companies are in need of, or could be improved by, transformation - that can be a rather foreign idea to many people who are used to maintaining the status quo.
StreetChief··on Office Landlords Use Cash Gifts, Loans to Inflate Building Values
How does this work? The rate and therefore value is fixed in contract? Is that why the previous tenant rent is used and not a market rate?
StreetChief··on Why Zig When There Is Already C++, D, and Rust?
New people will constantly be finding zig, and they will constantly be wondering why they should pick up zig, they will find that reference, and share it to educate others!

You can see this happening with the duplicate stories that show up on Hacker News; in general, it's a good thing:

“There are only two kinds of languages: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses.” ― Bjarne Stroustrup

StreetChief··on Why Zig When There Is Already C++, D, and Rust?
"If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?"

Attribute access is reading a value, invoking a function is different (as mentioned, using a stack, etc.), although it is certainly possible a function only reads and returns a value.

All that to say my answer is yes, providing flow control mechanisms makes it flow control... and falling trees make a sound!

StreetChief··on The Dawn of Cultural Schizophrenia (2023)
Most information in most spaces is noise. Finding the signal in the noise is difficult in every area, and restricting colloquial (or philosophical) discussion because of overlap with a medical field seems rather harsh to me. We need to learn to understand things deeply, not just look at the surface of the issue: instead of "regular literature is mixed in with scientific literature, so this article is bad," maybe we could look at the what the article provides, and use it to draw new conclusions or support our understanding in addition ways. I see many problems in our society, our culture, that I would describe as schizophrenic, as a reflection of human predilections, and this article provides another lens for understanding.
StreetChief··on Ship / Show / Ask (2021)
What if a pr was actual code review and not performative bullshit?
StreetChief··on The Dawn of Cultural Schizophrenia (2023)
"Leading masses of conversations to become little more than titbits of information and data flung in solely as signifiers of knowledge and meaning, yet never actually adhereing to any form of practice or purpose," seems pretty accurate to me.

I am curious as to what purpose you went to your uni library for. Medical research? Curiosity? What writings did you find? Why is it a problem that people use schizophrenia in conversation and writing? Not all discussion is medical research, and is certainly not held to those standards.

using the SATs has made them very wealthy - but nevermind, all schools use SATs.

You are certainly correct it is working for them - the concentration of wealth is getting worse and worse.

I am disagreeing - why would more money make you inherently smarter? His premise that smart parents make more more is unquestionably false when 99% (or something) of wealth is transferred via inheritance - people don't generally get rich anymore[1].

Also, if you want to measure IQ, why not use an IQ test and not some arbitrary proxy?

StreetChief··on Half of recent US inflation due to high corporate profits, report finds
That PPI price increase includes a profit margin... From the article: "Prices for consumers rose by 3.4% over the past year, but input costs for producers increased by just 1%."

[edit: clarity, tone, and added the below]

3.4 - 1 = 2.4% increase in profits/revenue for corporations while consumers see a 3.4% increase in costs...
