StopHammoTime··on Dev corrupts NPM libs 'colors' and 'faker', breaking thousands of apps
This raises some excellent points about code-ownership. Because I believe they should have at least forked rather than just restore his repo.

On the other hand if brother wants to get paid and stop people exploiting his work, maybe don't use the MIT license? There's always AGPL. Of course, as with Elastic, these projects would never get off the ground (in terms of support) without actually using a commercial-compliant license.

I'm starting to get sick of developers who release open-source work but then are surprised when people use their work as released. If you want someone to pay you money, ask for money. If they don't want to pay you, do something else. Stop playing games with licensing and taking things down.

Is all these people are doing are ruining open source.

StopHammoTime··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
The account with 12k chargebacks is not the freelancer, it is the person who employed them. Their account is the one at issue. This is not a normal chargeback from fraudulent behaviour on the end of the freelancer.

It is a chargeback because of fraudulent card misuse which should have been vetted by Upwork OR the payment provider. It is not the freelancers responsibility to do the payment or vetting. If it was their responsibility, you could cut Upwork out after the first transaction, but you can’t.

One of two people should be missing out here: Upwork for failing to verify the credit card or the actual persons bank for kit identifying fraudulent transactions.

StopHammoTime··on Show HN: I make $3K/mo from a browser extension
I LOVE devutils.app, it's great!

Thanks for building useful things!

StopHammoTime··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
Most underrated comment of 2021.
StopHammoTime··on We check our node_modules folder into source control
I don't agree that it should be checked into source control. I do believe it should be cached somewhere. How much bandwidth of popular sites are used by redundant actions. A single request for a 2GB archive is much better than a 1,000,000 small requests that are all a few KBs or MBs in size.
StopHammoTime··on PSA: uBlock/AdBlocks on Chrome to lose function thanks to Manifestv3
Firefox containers are way better than profiles.
StopHammoTime··on We will be retiring Alexa.com
You gave me my first good giggle of the day today. Oh schadenfreude, how little I knew this (in this context).
StopHammoTime··on AWS price reduction for data transfers out to the internet
amluto is spot on. AWS don't want to make money off of egress, they want to make it non-viable to move anything out of AWS that isn't being served to an end consumer.
StopHammoTime··on Doing Fraud on Securities Fraud
I feel literally like Abe Simpson "I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn’t 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!"

We used to buy things that had physical value, now we just buy memes.

StopHammoTime··on Fastmail is having problems again
Looks like a criminal operation is behind this.

StopHammoTime··on FTC Puts Hundreds of Businesses on Notice about Fake Reviews
Who pays attention to good reviews anyway, always read the bad reviews.
StopHammoTime··on Mistakes I've Made in AWS
This is literally the main reason a lot of companies use AWS. In Australia, it is very hard for Government Departments to get capital expenses approved for infrastructure as it requires a lot of rigmarole.

However, once you’re in AWS its OpEx, who cares as long as you don’t break the budget too soon before EOFY.

StopHammoTime··on How to prevent email spoofing, using an unholy combination of silly standards
For most services it is. But you’re right, if it’s self-hosting it’s a real pain in the d**.
StopHammoTime··on Official Elasticsearch Python library no longer works with open-source forks
Uhh, no. "Trillion dollar company BAD, think of the billion dollar company!!!". Elastic made it's business off being open source, period. If they weren't open source to begin with they wouldn't be as successful as they have been. Their whole business model initially built off the popularity of a useful open source project.

Of course, once you add-on that they've basically done to Lucene what AWS did to Elasticsearch, then the whole thing is a joke. I also just checked and Elastic are NOT sponsers of the ASF: https://www.apache.org/foundation/thanks.

Absolute garbage company in terms of open source and community. I will never willingly install their software ever again.

StopHammoTime··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
It is far better for them to offer $15, rather than employees demand $20. Their actions are strategic. Enough to keep the heat off from Union and Labor representatives, but not enough to affect their bottom line.
StopHammoTime··on How to spot a good fake ID
They are not as complicated as you think. They don’t retain your ID, they simply OCR the license number and check against a known list of offenders.
StopHammoTime··on FINRA Orders Record Financial Penalties Against Robinhood
Quite simple. The government legislates that membership in a non-government entity is required to do business in a sector.

If you’re fined and don’t pay the fine to the entity, they revoke the membership and you are now breaking the law.

StopHammoTime··on Terraform 1.0
I completely agree, I have PTSD from running an ansible playbook to deploy CF from the command line.
StopHammoTime··on Terraform 1.0
Definitely agree with this, Go is so verbose for the application. When I wrote a provider, I had the same problem. What made it even more worse is that I was connecting into an API that made use of dynamic json generation. So many interfaces and other hacks to get the json documents to parse correctly.
StopHammoTime··on Terraform 1.0
I literally implemented this not a month ago. I don't understand the complaint at all. Terraform is easily able to orchestrate a cluster then use it's data to configure the provider. The provider details does not need to be available until resources are created using the provider, which won't occur until the EKS cluster is available.
StopHammoTime··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
Here’s an idea, let’s charge tax on revenue and it can just be the cost of doing business. Small businesses get a tax holiday for the first few years. Problem solved.
StopHammoTime··on W3.org Cert Expired
They’re talking about the cert between edge and origin (I.e. cloudflare and your server). The client never sees that cert because they don’t talk directly to your origin.
StopHammoTime··on Data portability, the forgotten right of GDPR
That’s why laws exist.

There’s generally no incentive to not kill someone except going to jail.

StopHammoTime··on Dominance of Apple and Google’s app stores impacting competition and consumers
Just responding to this comment because all the comments below it seem to be tone deaf and are just complaining about Governments.

BAS (and all tax documents) can still be submitted via a Tax Agent or via Mail. There is no "lock in". Chances are if you own a computer, you own an android and an apple phone, who cares.

Mountain meet molehill.

StopHammoTime··on Google Took Down My Chrome Extension for Using Lodash
Actually think the whole thing was totally reasonable along with the few hours it took them to get back to you.

My only qualm would be if instead of removing your extension entirely, maybe it would be better to say "App is currently being reviewed and will be made available soon."

StopHammoTime··on Ross Ulbricht – Decentralize Social Media
The US Federal Government allowed Perdue Pharma to ravage the US with a corrupt OxyContin prescription system?

Sure he was a drug dealer, but if you’re that holier-than-thou the attitude should extend to the whole pharmaceutical industry who are just drug dealers in white coats a lot of the time.

StopHammoTime··on FAA safety engineer goes public to slam agency’s oversight of Boeing’s 737 Max
You're also forgetting the fact that Boeing still maintain the current aircraft. What if they cut corners in some updated manufacturing design or material? What if a new update to an FMS introduces faulty design into how something or other works. Yes, you're totally right if planes rolled out of the factory and was never touched by Boeing again, but that's not necessarily how it works.
StopHammoTime··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
As it's done in reality? No.

If done properly (very rarely done properly) it works as described on the box.

Most people simple use Agile as a way to generate interactive Gantt Charts that management can change willy-nilly. It's very rarely done to empower teams or improve effectiveness.

StopHammoTime··on United B772 at Denver on Feb 20th 2021, engine inlet separates from engine
Or also if your pilots have just finished their type rating and used to fly A320s. Hopefully they remember that you actually need to manage your throttle on a Boeing!
