Sthorpe··on The Toyota Witch Hunt
Really? You really believe that? All I ever see on the news is death, tragedy and drama. If they showed us something we didn't expect we wouldn't watch.
Sthorpe··on The Toyota Witch Hunt
Hacker News is great. I had been thinking this exact same thing but then realized I was being ridiculous. However, isn't it a little scary to realize how no one is in control of us? I noticed this when I was riding on Bart. Everyone acts a particular way based on what other people expect them to act like. We all operate with so much order and yet no one is telling us to. Just thought this was cool.

Sthorpe··on Why programming and musical talent go together: enjoying seeing patterns
Have you read on intelligence? Jeff Hawkins, talks about how everything we do is about detecting whats different in the patterns.
Sthorpe··on Rupert Murdoch makes the case for paying to read the news
So, your working on a startup and yet....you do want to charge your users something?

Maybe your just implying that there isn't really any need to read an article from Murdoch unless its free?

Sthorpe··on Rethinking artificial intelligence
I tried working on this very thing. The biggest problem I ran into is that if we program a system to do something, it will always be waiting for our feedback.

Right now I'm looking for something like a fractal. Where we get large constructs out of a small equation.

Sthorpe··on A great physicist, and how he worked
I love this comment, "Farmers to stay in close touch with the land, the source of their sustenance, and not to relegate all the manual work to hired laborers."

Every great company had been started from several small innovations. I knew youtube or any site that was playing video with flash was going to be big. Its because we had just developed the flash player to do it.

I learned then that playing with any new idea/software gave me much more than some curiosity.

I have been thinking a lot about striping away all superfluous pixels and limiting the area of function. Especially with the latest idea's of fast development patterns and feedback loops. I am developing a strong understanding of what we could consider a web foundation. Just as if we were building a structure or a machine.

Every time I find websites like this, I immediately think its simple and limited, yet efficient. But I do dislike this website. This company/website doesn't align with my idea of a new communication tool. However, the latest "web 2.0" site doesn't give me inspiration either. It is full of a bunch of pretty lights and distracting content.

Some times I wonder if the web needs a paradigm shift. Starting to think we are over engineering it when we should be focusing on specific function.

Sthorpe··on Dirty Little Secret of Success
And you agree with this point? I just like building things. I will always do this. However, the sheer joy of something i've built and someone likes using is a journey I am loving. I have this theory that if you build something that you can personally use, then you've built something worth while. Now, as far as wanting someone to love you, who doesn't want that? I certainly don't want to be hated. But I also don't want to compromise myself either.
Sthorpe··on Dirty Little Secret of Success
I can't believe how many people agree with this guy.

Seriously, why would anyone "break" themselves? I thought we were just learning from our mistakes...

I am very productive these days. I think when you truly love what you do, being an entrepreneur is just something you can tell people so they understand _why_ you don't work for someone.

I've worked at 9 - 6 before. I will never go back. Mostly because of the reward for not breaking myself and forgetting about what I love.

I mean how many people just like the joy of creating something for themselves and no one else. I do.

Sthorpe··on Why snark works
"the problem with sacrificing objectivity for a sense of belonging is that you don't see things quite as they are, so you have less ability to make a difference."

How do we agree as a group and yet continue to think independently? We have to agree on some things...right?

Sthorpe··on Why snark works
- So you would say its not only to be cool and get noticed but its also to say something, without caring about its originality, just to re-express a comment that has a proven effect? And this is better than saying nothing?

- Not sure I agree with your comment about women vs men with status. I believe that no matter what the information is, the social dynamic is different given a smaller group/context. It helps all of us narrow the focus.

- No clue why I keep hearing this love of hierarchy, respect and accountability. Whats wrong with just having something worth talking about? I think we all have a voice, maybe not the best tools to deliver it. But I think that's our job. :)

Sthorpe··on Why snark works
Its not only sad online but offline to. I wonder what causes people to talk/write in a snark fashion? What is the main motivator. To be cool? Get noticed? I guess youtube comments are the perfect example.

Maybe only thoughtful discussions can be had when a group is limited to a certain size and status is defined by the most original discussions. Not by the most accepted.

Sthorpe··on Myth: Entrepreneurship Will Make You Rich
I really like Eric, saw him down at stanford a couple of weeks ago.

Honestly, I am poor. Dirt poor. But I LOVE what I do. I consult to pay the bills. Right now, I'm hyper focused on starting a new business so I haven't been spending a lot of time getting new clients.

I had a client that fell on my lap the other day and I was so frustrated with them. The only reason they wanted to start their company was to make a lot of money and get rich. No passion, no iconoclastic idea's. Just, lets do this because it will make money.

I would love to see less money grubbing jerks and more passionate people who just love to create stuff. So i'm with Eric in getting the word out. This won't make you rich! Only do this if you love it. *pushes aside pulpit.

Sthorpe··on Why snark works
When i'm new to a group, I like creating my own snark comments instead of acting like I get theirs. Then I can hijack the assumptions others have and make them my own.

Besides if you don't use direct references you have to rely on assumptions. Which makes us all speak babble.

Sthorpe··on Tired of twitter and facebook? Here is one of my idea's.
Thanks for the feedback. Really good to know you are having this same problem.

I've had this problem to. Some information you just don't care about. However, you do care about some of it or you wouldn't have "friended" them. My system will allow you to see as much as you like, with a type of valve on the relationship.

I don't want to encourage adding points to people. I could see it becoming more of a who's better than the other person. Which is a system I don't want to be apart of. I would rather build tools that will help us strengthen our friendships and help us to appreciate our differences.

I think facebook apps are dead. However I think facebook connect and twitter's api are very useful and more applicable.

Thanks again.

I disagree. I think the perks would have continued if it wasn't for the down encon.

I don't see the attraction to working for Google. Unless they buy my company. o.O
