SteveMqz··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
At MIT first semester grades for freshman have been pass/no-record for several years now
SteveMqz··on Tell Abu Hureyra (prehistoric archaeological site)
Wrote about this one for my Archeology concentration.

It’s where you see the first division of labor between the sexes. All the skeletons of the women were damaged differently than the men’s, in a way that indicated they spent all day crushing the cereals to be able to make bread. Men skeletons didn’t have that damage.

SteveMqz··on Pong in S Favicon
Alright that's actually pretty cool. I would've never guessed you're able to update the tab icon that quickly
SteveMqz··on Just How Much Should You Worry About Eating That Burnt Toast?
It sounds to me like the science is actually pretty inconclusive on whether eating burnt toast is bad for you.

At the same time unneeded worrying and stress is definitely bad for your health.

SteveMqz··on I guess I kinda get why people hate AI
The margins on inference definetly aren’t negative. An easy way to check this is by looking at the costs of using cloud hosted open source models, which necessarily are served at a positive margin, and are much lower $/token than what you get from the labs.

Apple does run software for detecting CSAM on pictures users store to the cloud.
SteveMqz··on Spaced repetition for efficient learning (2019)
Well the simplest thing would be to have test/benchmarks you do at the start and end of each “chapter” (however you define that).

You fail miserably at the test at the start of each chapter, and crush it at the end.

The difficult part is deciding how the tests are spread out.

SteveMqz··on Lithium vs. Lettuce
They’ve been saying this for years. Every few months you’ll see an article about IV having the biggest store of lithium in the US, but nothing ever comes of it.
SteveMqz··on Perverse incentives of vibe coding
The study the article cited is specifically about when asking the LLMs about misinformation. I think on coding tasks and such shorter answers are usually more accurate.
