SteveDR··on The problem with "vibe coding"
> vibe coding allowed me to figure out some rough edges of my design document, and experiment with "what would it look like built with threads? As async code? As procedural?”

This doesn’t fall under my understanding of the phrase “vibe coding”. In the tweet from Karpathy which many point to for coining the phrase, he says that when vibe coding you essentially “forget the code exists”. I think it’s distinct from regular ol LLM-assisted development

SteveDR··on DeepSeek Drops Distributed DuckDB
Yes, most young people would say an artist “dropped” new music instead of saying that they released new music. Still a bad title though
SteveDR··on 500 ETH (almost 1.5M dollars) transaction containing a secret message
This is spreading quickly on social media but I don’t see anyone that I know to be reputable discussing it. I don’t even know where to begin researching how valid this is

SteveDR··on UI elements with a hand-drawn, sketchy look
Who is claiming that this style improves user feedback? From the OP, “these can be used for wireframes, mockups, or just the fun hand-drawn look.”

I like the style for its aesthetics alone

I don’t think that’s the intention of the author or the person who posted this or the people who voted it to the top of HN

SteveDR··on How too much daydreaming affected me
My tool for this kind of problem in my own life has been writing lyrics / poetry. Poetry is nice because you don’t need to close any loops or structure a beginning, middle, and end. You just drop in, spit up some words that convey the core thought, and leave.
SteveDR··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
I use a second account to watch videos that i think will muck with my recommendations in any way I don’t like. Comedy, political news, music videos, etc… it’s nice to have a separate feed that gets my taste in these things without distracting my main algorithm from focusing on my deeper interests
SteveDR··on Everything Is a Practice
> In this process though you will become a better human being. You will get better at living. You will have less pain down the road. Your path will be smoother.

I mean it’s hard to argue that you should do things that get in the way of this pursuit.

I agree with your sentiment, but I think your definition of self-improvement is off if it doesn’t include leisure, because finding healthy ways of incorporating leisure into your life definitely makes your “path” “smoother”.

Like, my ideal self isn’t a 100x engineer that sleeps at the office most nights. My ideal self spends time with his family, and cares for friends even if they don’t offer me anything tangible, and has hobbies that won’t result in measurable benefits to my “productivity”. So doing those things is self-improvement because I’m moving towards my own definition of success.

SteveDR··on Sounds emitted by plants under stress are airborne and informative

SteveDR··on The age of average
Agreed. Reading this I thought "all of these things are superficial, who cares?"

Who cares if movie posters and book titles are converging towards something that markets well? The parts that matter (the content, themes, style, etc) are probably very different among all those books/movies.

IMO Fashion like this exists just so that salesmen can convince consumers that they can buy The Current Thing and earn respect from their peers. Chasing the latest furniture, latest clothes, latest cars, etc.. It's all a shallow, costly signal of wealth that excludes the not-wealthy and distracts the wealthy from more fulfilling/productive pursuits.

If this trend means that fashion is dying, good riddance.

SteveDR··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
That is a disservice to society. Students and workers everywhere are forced to deal with stupid headlines on their OS 10 hours a day, while the people who make those machines get to opt-out. Ridiculous.

SteveDR··on Ask HN: How to deal with the loss of magic as a student?
Have you worked in industry at all? or just classes? The experience of programming for work is very different.

Regardless— there’s a lot of good work that doesn’t involve programming that is easy to get into with a CS degree. Design, Management, Security, DevOps, IT, and many many more.

Identify which parts of the field you really enjoy and are good at and go from there. I also recommend cal newports talks / book “so good they can’t ignore you” for anyone making early career decisions

SteveDR··on Self-replicating Python using ChatGPT

SteveDR··on TikTok just dropped a new realistic beauty filter
I didn’t know about the regulation of image processing, thanks.

I agree with your main point, that we should address body dysphoria… I just think that this ubiquitous meme that “beauty filters make people more insecure overall” is wrong.

The beautification achieved by these filters has been around for over 20 years. The difference is that today, that technology is accessible to everyone— any little girl can go to Snapchat and look like Kim Kardashian, and say “oh, this isn’t real.”

Whereas 20 years ago celebrities would spend hours upon hours with cosmeticians, surgeons, make up artists, and digital FX artists sculpting their image, all to appear on the cover of a magazine saying “my new diet has worked wonders for my skin!”

The playing field is more level than ever. And also, the technology isn’t going anywhere. So I think the best next move is to have conversations (especially with daughters) about taking pride in the parts of you that won’t be washed away by an AR filter.

SteveDR··on Snapchat is releasing its own AI chatbot powered by ChatGPT
Some highlights

> Quote from CEO: “The big idea is that in addition to talking to our friends and family every day, we’re going to talk to AI every day,” he says. “And this is something we’re well positioned to do as a messaging service.”

> At launch, My AI is essentially just a fast mobile-friendly version of ChatGPT inside Snapchat.

> It has also been stripped of functionality that has already gotten ChatGPT banned in some schools; I tried getting it to write academic essays about various topics, for example, and it politely declined.

> While ChatGPT has quickly become a productivity tool, Snap’s implementation treats generative AI more like a persona. My AI’s profile page looks like any other Snapchat user’s profile, albeit with its own alien Bitmoji. The design suggests that My AI is meant to be another friend inside of Snapchat for you to hang out with, not a search engine.

How does any of these help users to “connect” to one another? What a desperate cash grab

I wonder if they’re looking forward to the publicity bump when users inevitably trick it into saying crazy things

What does tiktok have anything to do with your claim that stem education is being replaced by “social justice shibboleths”?

SteveDR··on TikTok just dropped a new realistic beauty filter
Why are all the videos saying this is awful? I feel like I’m missing something… is the idea that people will learn that they’re not 10/10 attractive when they use this filter?

I’m pretty sure most people are aware of this, and if they’re, it’s on them to reconsider their values things if that kind of thing has a big impact on their ego…
