Steve16384··on The Old Guard: Confronting America's Gerontocratic Crisis
> If retirement age was say 80 instead of 60, there would be 25% fewer jobs to go around.

By that logic, when the population was 25% less than it is now (~1980s), there was a job for everyone.

Steve16384··on AI didn't delete your database, you did
It's taking "computer says no" to the next level. Computers do exactly what they're told, but who told them? The person entering data? The original programmer or designer of the system? The author of whatever language text was used to feed the ai? Even before AI, it was very difficult to determine who is accountable, and now it's even more obfuscated.
Steve16384··on The More Young People Use AI, the More They Hate It
Because lots of people, businesses and governments don't want to.
Steve16384··on London to Calcutta by Bus (2022)
Don't also forget the walk to get to the bus.
Steve16384··on Meetings are forcing functions
> set the agenda for the day

Were 90% of the agendas "working on the same thing as yesterday"? Did no-one know what they were doing that day until they had the daily meeting?

Steve16384··on It's OK to abandon your side-project (2024)
Hobbyist gamedevs: I only have one project that isn't abandoned, and that's my next one.

Steve16384··on An AI Vibe Coding Horror Story
Or someone starts with an Excel spreadsheet just to "keep track of a few things". Then before they know it, it has become a critical part of the business but too monolithic and unorganised to be usable.
Steve16384··on The 1987 game “The Last Ninja” was 40 kilobytes
Pretty much every 8-bit computer game of 1987 or earlier (before the 128kB machines became popular) were < 40Kb? The Spectrum and Commodore combined probably had a library in excess of 50,000 games.
Steve16384··on Delve allegedly forked an open-source tool and sold it as its own
But they didn't attribute it. Or does this not really matter?
Steve16384··on Subscription bombing and how to mitigate it
Did they use the same username/login every time?
Steve16384··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
Like the OpenAI deal?
Steve16384··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
Ideally it would be "don't buy from Oracle", but we don't get to affect those decisions.
Steve16384··on Android Developer Verification
Even once you've managed to verify, Google love throwing more challenges at you if you want to keep your apps in the store. "You need to declare your blood type or we will remove your apps in 30 days". I removed my apps myself as it was turning from a hobby to an unpaid job just to keep the apps in the store.
Steve16384··on HP trialed mandatory 15-minute support call wait times (2025)
I would imagine that most people who call are doing so because the "online help" can't help them. People want their problem fixed as quickly as possible, no-one wants to call a call centre.
Steve16384··on I was interviewed by an AI bot for a job
We need Universal Income.
Steve16384··on UK MPs give ministers powers to restrict Internet for under 18s
Reading some of the comments here, HN seems to have been invaded by Twitter users spouting their opinion as if it's fact.
Steve16384··on UK MPs give ministers powers to restrict Internet for under 18s
Do you have a source on that? All I could find was this that said America has the most, behind China: https://www.tooltester.com/en/blog/the-worlds-most-surveille...
Steve16384··on UK MPs give ministers powers to restrict Internet for under 18s
You should read the whole article: "A spokeswoman for Leicestershire police said crimes under Section 127 and Section 1 include “any form of communication” such as phone calls, letters, emails and hoax calls to emergency services." ".
Steve16384··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
Bloody BBC, keeping to the facts again...
Steve16384··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
Since AI is taking a lot of the jobs and businesses are presumably generating just as much if not more profit due to lower wage costs, I think the world has to align to a new paradigm: a lot of people will be unemployed because the jobs just aren't there any more, but a higher tax on the rich companies can be used to pay for benefits for all the unemployed.

This is the new utopia.

Steve16384··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
California confirmed 100% safe.
Steve16384··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
I've had this before, a few years ago, and a quick google at the time seemed to show that a fair few other people have. I'm in the UK, and about 6 months after buying something small from China (iirc), we got an £10 invoice for a "disbursement fee" from Fedex. It was very vague as to what the fee was actually for. I assume it was just a "scam" by Fedex to get more money.
Steve16384··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
Or, the team that everyone takes for granted and/or the pointy-haired bosses assume their project must be pretty basic and anyone can do it.
Steve16384··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
It's rare to have two engineers working separately but on exactly the same problem so their results can be directly compared.
Steve16384··on Tove Jansson's criticized illustrations of The Hobbit (2023)
Obviously true, but LOTR is also obviously more mature than The Hobbit, which I think was OP's point.
Steve16384··on “Microslop” filtered in the official Microsoft Copilot Discord server
It depends what the purpose of the Discord channel is. Is it for open and frank discussion, or for MS drones to discuss Copilot development. It's a cliche, but banning certain words smacks of 1984-style censorship.
Steve16384··on The Physics and Economics of Moving 44 Tonnes at 56mph
> The five minutes of inconvenience to you saves them meaningful time and money over the course of a day.

Assuming my time and everyone else stuck behind them combined is far less valuable than the truck driver.

Steve16384··on Ministry of Justice orders deletion of the UK's largest court reporting database
Imho it's only "important" because the media make such a big thing of migrants being the cause of all our ills.
