StefanBatory··on Debugging an Undebuggable App
I watched your video on Youtube - it was interesting!

But also thanks for providing a written version too, it's very nice ;)

StefanBatory··on San Francisco homelessness: Park ranger helps one person at a time
And now with RFK wanting to put people with ADHD into labor camps, any chances of a program to help mentally ill homeless people is close to zero. I am sure that they would accept that "help" :>
StefanBatory··on Writing a Gimp 3.0 Plugin
Why not try it yourself? ;)
StefanBatory··on We were wrong about GPUs
Sorry, discuss, not argue.

I do agree with you, though. I have fears though on how much can that be a thing in reality - because I cannot disagree that this is a right approach.

StefanBatory··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
"What I find confusing is that this is not typical of conservatism, it's like a progressive right of political outsiders whose express goal is to destroy the government, I don't think that's a controversial statement"

I think it'd be fair to call them populist right? I think they couldn't be further from classical conservatism. Chesterton's Fence is a concept that seems foreign to them.

StefanBatory··on Anyone can push updates to the doge.gov website
Yeah... I can't even imagine how that feels right now for you Canadians. :| With Russian-like rhetoric on y'all. All I can hope for is that the administration won't be that insane to actually go with it.
StefanBatory··on We were wrong about GPUs
> False dichotomy. There's no reason we can't have both.

I'd kinda want to argue with that - it is true, but we don't live in vacuum. Most programmers (me included, don't worry) aren't that skilled, and after work not everyone will want to study more. This is something that could be resolved by changing cultural focus, but like other things involving people, it's easier to change the system/procedures than habits.

StefanBatory··on Anyone can push updates to the doge.gov website
I am quoting it here. It's not my beliefs, just to be clear.

"We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children"

StefanBatory··on Anyone can push updates to the doge.gov website
I think that while Euro-American split was to be expected - we don't care about Pacific, they don't care about Russia - I think nobody expected USA to actually become hostile, and not just become neutral.
StefanBatory··on Ask HN: How common it is to earn six figures as a software engineer in USA?
I know it's over exaggeration, but even look at other responses here - it's amount of money that is unimaginable here to me.
StefanBatory··on Ask HN: How common it is to earn six figures as a software engineer in USA?
i'm totally not jealous of salaries in USA :P
StefanBatory··on Fewer students are enrolling in doctoral degrees
It's why I wouldn't want to pursue PhD. (besides simply knowing I'm not cut out for research).

I don't want to spend even more years in education. I want to still use my youth while I can; going into PhD would make me unable to.

StefanBatory··on "Homotopical macrocosms for higher category theory" identified as woke DEI grant
What is "wokism".

edit: > rather than keep a science that concluded it was ok to perform scientific experimentation on children to a Nazi level.

ah okay, don't bother to reply, no point. I missed that "point" when I asked.

StefanBatory··on Ask HN: How common it is to earn six figures as a software engineer in USA?
I know, but I'm curious.

I'm Polish.

Here I'd say I can expect an average wage of somewhere around 6 to 8k PLN should I have few years of experience as a software engineer; that is around $1.5k - $2k ($1 = 4 PLN is a good estimate even if it can vary at times). Minimal wage is 3.5k PLN, so ~$880.

StefanBatory··on Ask HN: How common it is to earn six figures as a software engineer in USA?
Thank you all for responses.
StefanBatory··on Why is everyone trying to replace Software Engineers?
And then the thing is, how do you train new employees? Any juniors will be useless.

Year, or two of unpaid internships? It's nothing new. In my country it works like this for doctors or pharmacists - they have to do half a year of unpaid work if they want to get diploma (and I use work and not internship for reason) Because as a junior you don't bring anything of value to company, you're a loss to them.

StefanBatory··on Why is everyone trying to replace Software Engineers?
Because:

1) We're expensive (at least for Poland, I can aim for ~6-8k PLN monthly after few years of experience. Other, even civil/mech engineers will have around 4-6k monthly with similar experience) [edit: and minimal wage is 3.5k after taxes]

2) It appears to be replaceable (you can replace us with LLMs to an extent, you can't do that with other jobs)

StefanBatory··on I tasted Honda’s spicy rodent-repelling tape and I will do it again (2021)
... if you got to the point where gun was pulled on you, that was already a situation where it's so fine? I'll be honest, I don't understand how can you be so calm.
StefanBatory··on AI Demos
I really wish to see undergraduate doing this kind of work :P
StefanBatory··on Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian power systems synchronised with Europe
With the ascension of Trump to power, NATO might be irrelevant.
StefanBatory··on Starlink in the Falkland Islands – A national emergency situation?
Argentinians are "settlers" too, when you think of it. I think, that according to your line of logic, they should all leave Argentine and leave it to native people.

Maybe they can move to Falklands, then. Because it was empty and had no natives...

StefanBatory··on LINUX is obsolete (1992)

StefanBatory··on Station of despair: What to do if you get stuck at end of Tokyo Chuo Rapid Line
As a student - that fucked me over, as working Saturday and Sunday in stores would be the easiest way to earn money on side. :P

And then govt decided to stop for brownie points with church.

StefanBatory··on The King in Yellow
I feel the same. Feels like the concept is way better than execution.

Maybe it's because at the time it released it was novel, but now it's cliche?

StefanBatory··on The King in Yellow
I'm afraid I need someone to explain to me why it's a good book. :(

Genuinely, I remember reading first four stories after playing Signalis and I was very unimpressed. Especially with the first story, where I felt it was rambling for the sake of rambling.

I'm genuinely asking, really. If it matters I've been reading it in translation.

I as a individual would be liable to pay ~1000$ of damages if I'd downloaded a movie in Germany or Poland and the publisher would get to me.

I'm going to assume as it's a corporation, then the laws no longer apply.

Or if you don't agree with the price, do not buy it. You are NOT entitled to entertain yourself in any way you want. (unless it's funded by taxes etc, in which case... okay, it's open to discussion.)

Look, let's be honest - what gives you or others the right to steal from others?

StefanBatory··on US egg prices increased 22% in 2025 and 202% in 12 months
Could be that normally this wouldn't have caused much shortage or price increase, but that in conjunction with avian flu it escalated.
