StefanBatory··on Older editions of which books were better than the new ones? (2010)
Thank you!
StefanBatory··on Older editions of which books were better than the new ones? (2010)
I was at library some time ago and skimmed upon some old textbooks, written still during the Communist rule here - and they just were so much better in terms of explaining things. (as long as they weren't history stuff, naturally.)
StefanBatory··on Older editions of which books were better than the new ones? (2010)
May I ask why?

... I just bought the second edition few days ago for my course.

StefanBatory··on That Time I Recreated Photoshop in C++
It seems to me like their tasks were way heavier. For us, most of us did basic CRUDs with some implemention twist, and our papers were your standard: do a short theoretical introduction to the domain, make a few UML diagrams, explain how it works + some code examples, then testing.

Author of this article said he finished at Warsaw University of Technology - it was always considered to be one of the better ones here.

That being said, what also strikes me is how different the thesis were back in times. I did mine recently in another university of technology in some bigger city (without wanting to dox myself that much) and 90% of our engineering theses were of very subpar quality; mine included.

StefanBatory··on Cursor told me I should learn coding instead of asking it to generate it
Ah, I see Claude has trained a lot on internet resources.

This made my day so far.

StefanBatory··on Mississippi Passes Bill Banning Lab-Grown Meat
The part about marketing/labeling is a fair one - I haven't thought about that.
StefanBatory··on Mississippi Passes Bill Banning Lab-Grown Meat
Okay, your argument is fair enough - I'll admit that.
StefanBatory··on Mississippi Passes Bill Banning Lab-Grown Meat
Is there any other reason for this than protecting meat industries and/or cultural reasons?
StefanBatory··on Show HN: Seven39, a social media app that is only open for 3 hours every evening
It was always a small source of joy on Discord to see Americans getting on the server while East Asians would go to sleep, with us Europeans being in the middle. It always feels so cute for some reason I can't explain, but I do love that every time.
StefanBatory··on Ecosia is teaming up with Qwant to build a European search index
I wanted to use Bing, but I had to go back to Google - as it is absolutely awful for finding stuff in Polish, my native language.

Programming might be English but our lives aren't all in English.

Also, I don't get your argument at the end. Are you saying they're funded by Nazi parties?

StefanBatory··on A Post Mortem on the Gino Case
Example on a smaller scale - I remember how at uni people who did none of the work could end up with better grades. I remember toiling weeks on a hard "group" project alone, and then my groupmates who contributed nothing got better grades - because from project we all got the same one, and from exams I got worse ones as I had no time to study well.
StefanBatory··on Most Americans just don't matter to the economy like they once did
I looked at first post and yeah. Same in Poland. Do try to guess how many of our MPs are landlords. Rhetoric question, of course.
StefanBatory··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
I wanted to tell you that we don't have conscription in Poland -

... but it got reinstated yesterday.

StefanBatory··on Most Americans just don't matter to the economy like they once did
And it raises a very scary question - at which point will we be seen as useless to the ruling caste? And useless resources are to be disposed of...

I remember how once CEO of a company my dad worked at has called them. Cattle. Not humans.

That is what we are to the rich.

StefanBatory··on 40% of Britons haven't read a single book in the last 12 months
I do organize my books by genre (IT/science, high fiction, low fiction, history, non-fiction, language learning).

... and then by size. It's the most aesthetically pleasing for me, genuinely.

StefanBatory··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Hey, I didn't say it was a great reason! :P
StefanBatory··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
It's... not that easy. And if he fails at it, he risks a lot - most likely getting thrown into army as a deserter and most likely sent to the equivalent of penal units.

(EDIT: Unless they're a woman/nb, in which case yeah - please try to do so because it will be way easier for you)

StefanBatory··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
Russians could invade and while it is most likely that after a long war they'd be pushed back, they'd still leave ruins.

Also, we don't have unified army. So as painful as it is, it is most likely Baltic states would have to fend of with their military (and due to population, well, they can't - even if they are bringing conscription back), maybe Poland and Finland. Maybe. And then you'd have to coordinate what to do next between all national militaries.

And what would stop a Frenchman or Portuguese to say Why die for Vilnius?

:\

StefanBatory··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
And you stop it now - no security guarantees for Ukraine - and more people will die in few years when Russia strikes back, having rearmed herself.
StefanBatory··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Chamberlain had a reason - UK army wasn't really ready for a fight. He tried to buy some time to rearm. Misguided or not, you could say there was a reason for that.
StefanBatory··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
That would be a good ending by now - USA can start supporting Russia. With intelligence, with weapons.
StefanBatory··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Why are you making things up?
StefanBatory··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
I'm afraid of USA by now.

That one day they will sever ties with Europe, I expected. But not becoming an actively hostile state.

I am left wondering - how long it will take until Americans start openly supporting Russia and China?

When I was younger, anti-American people were a source of jokes for me. Being a Pole, why would anyone be against our ally? Well, now I see. And it's painful to say that, but I'm starting to see Americans as people in very negative light. Perhaps you were hated in the rest of the world for a reason.

Cruelty is the point.
StefanBatory··on Mark Zuckerberg Announces the "Beginning of the End" for Programmers
Nobody likes to lose their jobs, especially when it seems that it is the entire industry that will crash.
StefanBatory··on Mark Zuckerberg Announces the "Beginning of the End" for Programmers
Seeing the progress in LLMs... I do believe it. One software engineer will do in the future what would take an entire team in the past.

Now what to do? I have just finished my undergrad in software engineering and got admitted to Masters, but I feel that's a mistake. At the same time, I never knew what else to do in my life but programming.

StefanBatory··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
... I had been called out by it hard, lmao. Painfully accurate.
StefanBatory··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
I recall seeing a nice sale, I was to get a few books from them, and then the reality of living on the second side of the Atlantic hit hard :(

At least one of our publishers did a translation for few of them...

StefanBatory··on "Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies" – Executive Order
Few days ago, in Poland died a journalist, historian and former Auschwitz concentration camp prisoner. He was known for speaking every year there. His last speech was - remain vigilant.

I think that speaks for itself and I need not to comment on this.

Americans, why? Why are you so keen on dabbling with a homegrown fascism of yours? Why are you so keen on setting the world aflame?
