StavrosK··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
I agree.
StavrosK··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
Are you arguing against deciding?
StavrosK··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
Indeed, how do we decide anything that's on a gradient?
StavrosK··on Ivermectin for Prevention and Treatment of Covid-19 Infection
Borsalino?
StavrosK··on Rest In Peace, John. I was lucky to know you so deeply
Also most people don't want to put in the work to maintain relationships for this long.
StavrosK··on An unwanted update to your Google Account
I disagree, even EU companies don't have to adhere to the GDPR if they don't target EU countries. Google doesn't have to adhere to the GDPR for people in the US, whether they're EU citizens or not.
StavrosK··on An unwanted update to your Google Account
No, because the GDPR doesn't apply to citizens, but to companies. It only applies to companies that target the EU for their services:

StavrosK··on CatMeows: A Publicly-Available Dataset of Cat Vocalizations (2020)
Maybe my cat is just weird, she has brain damage:

StavrosK··on CatMeows: A Publicly-Available Dataset of Cat Vocalizations (2020)
Ah yeah, true, we don't let out cat outside, or if we're going to, we don't trim her nails for a few weeks beforehand.
StavrosK··on CatMeows: A Publicly-Available Dataset of Cat Vocalizations (2020)
Maybe there's more in videos I didn't watch, but I watched 5-6 videos and the cat seems to be pressing buttons randomly. It doesn't seem to correspond to anything it does.
StavrosK··on CatMeows: A Publicly-Available Dataset of Cat Vocalizations (2020)
I have a cat, but am a dog person. The difference in intelligence is stinking. The cat can't communicate anything past meowing generically, whereas the dog can understand what I'm saying and bark on the one it wants.

When my cat wants something, she'll meow uselessly until we chance on what it is. When my dog wants something, she'll come to me and touch me with her paw, and I'll say "Food. Water. Walk." and she'll bark at the one she wants. It's amazing.

Do you guys not trim their nails? No scratching when they aren't sharp.
StavrosK··on I know the secret to the quiet mind but wish I’d never learned it
Yep, that's it!
StavrosK··on I know the secret to the quiet mind but wish I’d never learned it
You have no idea how much technical debt there is in the average body. There's much more technical debt in the body than there is technology in the world.

The two systems aren't remotely comparable in complexity.

StavrosK··on I know the secret to the quiet mind but wish I’d never learned it
Did you also hear a sound like a bass guitar string snapping when this happened?
StavrosK··on In Argentina, cheap government-issued netbooks sparked a musical Renaissance
Ahh, so water isn't inherently blue, our eyes and brains interpret it as blue because it's blue.

Looking for misconceptions is a great strategy, thanks!

StavrosK··on In Argentina, cheap government-issued netbooks sparked a musical Renaissance
You'd definitely think so!
StavrosK··on How many flies are in my apartment?
Yes, the path each one takes can very accurately be called a "random fly".
StavrosK··on Spatial Audio
Yes, but I have a suspicion the rights holder in this case is the label and not the composer/performer.
StavrosK··on What's Happened to the National Trust
> The quoted example is from the article, and it gives the meaning as 'to stay awake', i.e. verb.

Yes, but it uses it in "stay woke" not "I woke this morning".

> I just disagree that the 'older than you might think' argument that follows is correct, or that if so it has any value (since even the article seems to acknowledge its a different usage to the modern slang).

I agree, it's not the modern usage as it doesn't have the same meaning, but I think the article means that its usage as an adjective is old, not that the usage with its current meaning is old. Which I guess makes it very debatable if "the word" has been around for that long.

StavrosK··on Spatial Audio
It's a bit of an insult to the original artist, in my view. When I create something, it's an expression of my personality, and I the choices I make reflect my aesthetic. If you take it and remix it, that's fine, but don't put my name on it, it's "Song X (Apple Atmos Remix)" now.
StavrosK··on What's Happened to the National Trust
You're talking about the word's usage as a verb (the past tense of "wake", ie "I woke this morning"), the article mentions its usage as an adjective ("to be woke").
StavrosK··on What's Happened to the National Trust
> Until we go back to understanding that morality is [...] a fixed set of behaviours that have stood the test of time for millenia

You mean like how today it's still considered moral to own slaves, to execute criminals, to deny women rights that men have, etc? Like that?

StavrosK··on Missouri Has Declared Federal Gun Laws Invalid
> The argument is generally that a well-armed civilian populace is ungovernable without their consent.

Do you believe this? How would the populace subsist without food or imports? Maybe this was possible in the 1800s, but I'd imagine guns are the least of the worries now...

StavrosK··on Missouri Has Declared Federal Gun Laws Invalid
I'm not very knowledgeable because I've only been in the US a few times, but, as far as I know, the people who like to own guns and the people who are more likely to want to lynch black people are the same group, no?
StavrosK··on Missouri Has Declared Federal Gun Laws Invalid
Do people seriously claim this, though? Like, people legitimately keep guns in their homes because they might have to fight against the US Army some day? I thought this was a joke, something people say with a smile and a wink while they mean "we just think they're fun".
StavrosK··on Missouri Has Declared Federal Gun Laws Invalid
Can someone explain to me why guns are such a big thing in some places of the US? What's the appeal? Is it just "shooting guns is fun"? I don't see much benefit otherwise.
StavrosK··on In Argentina, cheap government-issued netbooks sparked a musical Renaissance
Not exactly relevant to your post, but I'm dismayed by the number of people who refuse to believe that water is blue. I don't mind that nobody knows that, it's an obscure fact, but the fact that they refuse to believe something that explains a bunch of everyday phenomena (like the color of the sea) makes me sad.
StavrosK··on In Argentina, cheap government-issued netbooks sparked a musical Renaissance
> giving a computer to someone doesn't turn them into a Bill Gates or Steve Jobs just because they own it.

The point isn't to make every one of these kids a Bill Gates, it's to prevent the Bill Gates among them from living a life of poverty because they couldn't get a computer early enough.

StavrosK··on In Argentina, cheap government-issued netbooks sparked a musical Renaissance
Sure, but it's worth wasting 99 laptops if even we manage to enable one child to get a better education, and that's even before considering that the other 99 laptops are probably not going to be wasted either.
