StavrosK··on In Argentina, cheap government-issued netbooks sparked a musical Renaissance
In my experience, IPFS doesn't even do a good job of fully-online updates. Maybe my setup was bad, but I couldn't get it to reliably and quickly discover content on other nodes that were definitely online.
StavrosK··on Stay Away from Cloudflare (2017)
Wow, that's a lot of bad. How did they manage to create an account with your email address? Doesn't it require verification?
StavrosK··on The Hair Dryer Incident (2014)
It's not about whether the person is "a success" or "a failure", it's about whether the person feels that their condition is materially impacting their daily life. If I feel that my gaming habit is impacting my job because I can't resist playing games during work hours, that can be classified as a disorder.

It's just shorthand for "this is something we'd like to fix".

StavrosK··on Stay Away from Cloudflare (2017)
How did that happen and why did it take weeks to resolve?
StavrosK··on Nuitka: a Python compiler written in Python
Yeah, but in the first case you go from 1000 files to 2, whereas in the second you go from 2 to 1, which is much less impressive.

Metrics are fun!

StavrosK··on A bare metal physical implementation of WASM. That's right, a WebAssembly CPU (2018)
But then you will have achieved the TODO, ruining the joke.
StavrosK··on Bear plus snowflake equals polar bear
Almost certainly a joke.
StavrosK··on New browser signal could make cookie banners obsolete
I saw the exact same thing and was surprised too! I wonder if it was a site that was on HN...

I press "accept all" by accident and thought "wow".

StavrosK··on Archaeologists discover and crack a thousand-year-old chicken egg
Maybe God put chicken eggs on the Earth.
StavrosK··on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Exist; They Must Be Banned
Because blowing up weddings leads to dissatisfied voters, so politicians are less likely to do that very often.
StavrosK··on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Exist; They Must Be Banned
And if fewer weddings get blown up, we'll use them more and more to kill people. I wonder whether the absolute number of killings will go up or down this way.
StavrosK··on New browser signal could make cookie banners obsolete
Or like those that make the "Accept all cookies" button green and the "accept necessary" white/colorless/default.
StavrosK··on EFF Browser Tracker Simulator
Same here, maybe it's my portrait-orientation screen.
StavrosK··on Europe's Software Problem
* the web, not the internet.
StavrosK··on AirDrop Anywhere – Making it work on Windows
Probably because reverse-engineering it is less effort than rewriting all the clients that Apple has already written.
StavrosK··on I teach Python on the Raspberry Pi 400 at the public library
Thonny looks great, thanks for the tip! I've had friends who had trouble understanding how return values work, this would help!
StavrosK··on Gooey: Turn almost any Python command line program into a GUI application
They certainly look like NSIS installers.
StavrosK··on “Please don't add any of my stuff to this project”
Apparently not, since the author couldn't/didn't want to either.
StavrosK··on Gooey: Turn almost any Python command line program into a GUI application
Oh damn, that's fantastic! I wanted to write a small server that did something between this and Fire above (i.e. allowed you to drop a Python script into a directory and would create a UI for its functions). It's a great way to make small, random functions I've written accessible to people with zero work.
StavrosK··on The Swiss reject key climate change measures
> however it doesn't take away that often change is held back because of ...1-2%...

Don't you mean "because of 52%"?

StavrosK··on Surprising Shared Word Etymologies
Sure, but I don't speak much ancient Greek and I didn't want to make too many assumptions about what carried over versus what changed.
StavrosK··on Goodbye Freenode
What good would that do, if the users aren't connecting to the network?
StavrosK··on Goodbye Freenode
My comment was a rather tongue-in-cheek take of how Libera is carrying on the spirit of Freenode, and we should just consider Freenode a random other network that somehow got Freenode's name by accident.
StavrosK··on Goodbye Freenode
He's super helpful in #python, great guy.
StavrosK··on I Miss the Old Internet (2019)
That's a nice hack. Also, if you can power it from somewhere, you can use a bare ESP8266 module and put it in the serial enclosure to make it fully self-contained.
StavrosK··on Animal testing is exploitative and largely ineffective
> If animal testing was outlawed, the same testing would probably end up being done on poor people instead.

That's... quite the leap. The entire point is that ethics committees are much more averse to human testing than to animal testing, so we're less conscientious about animal testing.

StavrosK··on Surprising Shared Word Etymologies
> But they did not, themselves, perceive the two sounds as being different sounds.

This makes sense, thanks. I guess we generally don't perceive the different sounds in our languages, like an English speaker generally won't perceive the difference between t͟hə and t͟hē (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/the for audio).

StavrosK··on How fighter jets lock on, and how the targets know (2014)
Well, that's sound logic and a great quote, thanks!
StavrosK··on How fighter jets lock on, and how the targets know (2014)
Yeah, I'd expect pilots to talk like that, it just had an impression on me because I didn't expect a journalist explaining something to have the same vernacular.
StavrosK··on NymphCast – Open-source Chromecast Alternative
Oh, then it's very different from what I want...
