Sprint··on Gabe Newell: Linux is the future of gaming, new hardware coming soon
Wine and DRM is a problematic combination.
Sprint··on Gabe Newell: Linux is the future of gaming, new hardware coming soon
Running in Wine is not porting. It is using a intermediate layer. Porting means native code.

> PandaDoc tracks your docs, let’s you know who has looked at what, when, and then gives you detailed analytics to help you plan your next move.

Aka a service where I as receiver would feel violated from being spied on. It is no one's business when and where I read what and how.

Also, it being cloud-based you never really receive the documents, but you are just enabled to view them if the site is online. Or maybe I am misreading the marketing speak.

Sprint··on Why you should not pirate Google’s geo APIs
np and cheers!

Yeah, I think so too. And querying SRTM tiles is prerry simple.

Sprint··on Why you should not pirate Google’s geo APIs
How do you know it is just SRTM?
Sprint··on PhotoShop is not a design tool
I was no criticising NoFlo but the post.
Sprint··on Show HN: st – simple statistics from the command line
Yeah, I was thinking about that and spent the past minutes to make me some Bash functions like:

  function mean() {
          octave -q --eval "mean = mean(load('$1'))"
  }
Then just run "mean numbers.txt".

I am sure your approach is much quicker, octave takes a good 0.5s(!) to load on my machine.

Sprint··on Show HN: st – simple statistics from the command line
I'd just use octave. It's as simple as

  $ octave
  octave:1> a=load('numbers.txt');
  octave:2> sum(a)
  ans =  55
  octave:3> mean(a)
  ans =  5.5000
  octave:4> std(a)
  ans =  3.0277
  octave:5> quantile(a)
  ans =

      1.0000
      3.0000
      5.5000
      8.0000
     10.0000
etc
Sprint··on PhotoShop is not a design tool
This is well disguised advertisement for a kickstarter campaign with the trademark medium.com long-winded cringe-worthy grandiosity ego-stroking setup.

Skip, you aren't missing anything in this.

Sprint··on ExoBrowser: The Experimentation Platform to Build a Next generation Web Browser
Opera has sessions too, super nice if you want to clean up those 100 tags that accumulated in research.
Sprint··on 9,866,539 buildings in the Netherlands, shaded according to year of construction
I would use differently colored sequential schemes per building type, that might look good. Time to grab the data and play around. :)
Sprint··on 9,866,539 buildings in the Netherlands, shaded according to year of construction
Cartographers have it easy thanks to the wonderful sets on http://colorbrewer2.org/js/ . The scheme looks inspired by them.

I wonder why this map was done with a divergent scheme though. The data has no midpoint, it makes no sense to diverge like that. And when you zoom out it, due to the diverging lightness ramp it highlights the lightest colors which are 1945 to 1975.

It looks gorgeous but the color choice is not perfect for exploring the data.

Sprint··on Visualizations that make no sense
We learn that there has never been such an interest in the hog-calling competition before and that in 2012 it was significantly higher than ever before.
Sprint··on Visualizations that make no sense
I vehemently disagree that 0 should be the baseline. That would make absolutely no sense for this plot. I would use something like the average or median of the relevant temperatures as baseline. Using 0 as baseline gives you huge columns and does not highlight the big step at all. I would rather have relative value changes to the lowest temperature I chose to display, so in this case: 0 0.12 0.33 0.50 0.51 1.49

3D columns are bad of course, but that is neglible.

Sprint··on Visualizations that make no sense
That is a bad example of a bad example. It is clearly labeled and shows what it wants to show: The previously hottest years and the large jump of that record in 2012. How would you have done it better? What is it misinterpreting?
Sprint··on Show HN: Gingko, a tree-document editor
~550px on ~15cm I'd guess. With a sane text size as on HN for example I get about 30 lines of text on it.

Browser sadly zoom the whole page nowadays, not just the text. So that is not a good solution.

Sprint··on Show HN: Gingko, a tree-document editor
Dear authors, my screen has hundreds of pixels vertically, I would like to be able to read more than 15 lines at once. The font size is insanely huge. It made me close the tab.
Sprint··on Show HN: Spotify for Independent Music
Sorry, I meant music under free licenses like creative commons. Free means at least free to share to me, not free to download for personal use.
Sprint··on Show HN: Spotify for Independent Music
Hm, I get no music and no indication why.

Any chance that you would add free music aka music by people who want their art listened without anyone having to pay?

Sprint··on Tell HN: Add ?share=1 to Quora URLs to display content without login
As you can easily re-enable it with any decent browser (Opera 12 is great) that is no issue since if you actually want to have a site to have interactive features on its pages, just enable it. Otherwise, you get soothing, plain, static content. Most sites to not require Javascript for reading text or looking at images.
Sprint··on Privacy is not dead
Value does not have to be monetary. In the example of an e-mail account, valuing privacy might be choosing a specific host because it has some better ToS or selecting a specific client because it supports PGP well.
Sprint··on Privacy is not dead
Look at yourself.
Sprint··on Tell HN: Add ?share=1 to Quora URLs to display content without login
Just disable Javascript by default, it will protect your sanity.
Sprint··on A/B Testing Duration Data
Especially with timing data I find it much more useful to look at the median instead of average value. If someone lets the browser sit open for a while it will skew the average but not the median.
