Splendor··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
The military is full of young people who grew up in poverty. It might be good for national security if more of them didn't have nutritional deficiencies. They aren't separate issues.
Splendor··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
A quick search turned up this one that claims to have 12 strains of bacteria. It is also USP verified. I'm not an expert and have never tried it, but hopefully that info helps.

Splendor··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
> ...a researcher reported last week at a microbiology meeting in Washington, D.C.

Am I missing it or is this all we are given as a source for the claim in the headline? Not even a name?

Splendor··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
It's interesting how this court consistently rules to limit the power of government when it is acting against corporations but happily expands the power of government when it is being wielded against people.
Splendor··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Luckily 99% of abortions don't fall into that category.
Splendor··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
You realize you said this in your previous comment right?

> ...and corrupt politicians are preventing that transition.

Splendor··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Nope. You completely misunderstand the pro-choice argument. You can believe life begins at conception and still believe it's wrong to force a woman to carry a fetus to term.
Splendor··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
There may not have been significant moves in the last 50 years, but the majority remains pro-choice.
Splendor··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
I see. I should've quoted the bit I was replying to.

They said:

> Do it in the middle of a desert far away from any people. No NIMBYs, not interesting for attacks.

And I was just pointing out that building it in the middle of the desert has not proven to be a good way of avoiding opposition.

Splendor··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
I don't remember saying it was. Did you reply to the wrong comment?
Splendor··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
So the government is both promoting the lie and preventing the transition?
Splendor··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
Let me introduce you to Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. Even the middle of the desert is not safe from NIMBYs.

Splendor··on Eye contact between musicians
Maybe this is just a sign of working in a technical field for too long, but my mind always jumps to counterexamples first. So I was surprised they didn't even acknowledge the existence of blind musicians.
Splendor··on Open call – your field recordings of obsolete sounds wanted
Semi related, I recently watched these videos of Benn Jordan's field recording adventures and enjoyed them a lot.

Splendor··on The New York Times is wrong about Haiti
> While I have some criticisms, most of the historical facts are correct. There are places where I could nitpick, but most of the facts are solid. I think the problems with the articles are in tone and in conclusions.

The softest of takedowns.

Splendor··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
> In 1978, the ACLU succcessfully [sic] defended the right of neo-Nazis to march in Skokie, Illinois, a community populated by Holocaust survivors. But in 2018, following the ACLU’s successful litigation to obtain a permit for white supremacists to march in Charlottesville, Virginia, which ended in death and disaster, the ACLU issued new guidelines. Citing concerns about “limited resources” and “the potential effect on marginalized groups,” the organization cautioned its lawyers to take special care when considering whether to represent groups whose “values are contrary to our values.”

First off. A professor writes a mere 1,000 word article for a major publication and it has typos. Yikes.

Second, the author points to action the ACLU took to defend the right of white supremacists to march in Charlottesville in 2018 and then tries to say they've changed position but doesn't demonstrate that with any proof of similar action or inaction -- just words. IMO actions are more important than words and if the ACLU's actions are still in line with the mission you say you agree with, this is much ado about nada.

Splendor··on A new tool for finding dark matter digs up nothing

I'd love to hear about all of the less implausible hypotheses you're referring to.

Do you have a source for that claim or are you speculating? If existing officers fled as you suggest they appear to have been easily replaced.

According to the chief in November, 2021 there were 1,015 deployable officers[0]. As of today, there are 1,325[1].

Splendor··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
I believe they might be. I also believe they might not be. In that situation I find it best to fall back on the verifiable facts of the situation. I understand not everyone has the same standard for verifying information and you are of course welcome to make your own conclusion.
Splendor··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
With respect, I prefer to ignore anecdotal explanations that conveniently lack the ability to be verified. But thanks for adding your perspective.
