Spidler··on One in every 600 websites has .git exposed
We deploy from git via "git archive". Wastes a bit of space, but there's no extra resources on the server.

Spidler··on Python's Web Framework Benchmarks
This is apples to watermelons comparision.

The remote test uses a new `requests` instance (tear down and set-up of a new HTTP request, not a session) for each call, except in Tornado , where it uses `tornado.httpclient.AsyncHTTPClient` and in muffin where it's using `aiohttp.request`.

The klein example uses `treq` while the aiohttp example uses `aiohttp.request`.

Requests might have a pretty API, but it is one of the, if not the worst performing http libraries you can use.

Spidler··on Revisiting How We Put Together Linux Systems (2014)
For those that wish to see what came from this, we have:

Sandboxed Apps https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/SandboxedApps from Alex Larsson.

The code is hosted at https://github.com/alexlarsson/xdg-app .

The first xdg-app release https://blogs.gnome.org/alexl/2015/03/31/official-gnome-sdk-... has some more details and summary, and links to the proof of concept builds.

Spidler··on Obstacles for kdbus
I must say that I agree, and I'm personally _very_ fond of their business model.

Having the articles become free no matter what, and having articles of a level of quality that they _Repeatedly_ get referenced in papers on computer science, is a great feat.

Are there any other magazines online that have a good, weekly/bi-weekly posting schedule of multiple, high-quality and on-topic articles? I've seen ones related to photography, but not that have the same focus and high quality as LWN.

Spidler··on Appropriate Uses for SQLite
SQLite scales very well for reading data, actually. If your site is single-write:many-read (most are) it works brilliantly.

If you however cause writes when people open pages, look at content. Anything from hit counters to tracking behaviour. Then SQLite suddenly starts to scale pretty badly.

The same goes with how your processing works. Multiple processes that may all at some point cause writes? This is bad. Threads inside a process? That works.

Spidler··on Systemd can now pull and update container images from the Internet
I just hope they check for certificates better than Docker does.

systemd-nspawn is a really fun thing to work with for developing early-init/daemons of various kinds, and this adds a bit more tools to that.

Spidler··on Systemd can now pull and update container images from the Internet
There already is a HTTP server there. It's log support / shipping is done via HTTP as a transport.

Spidler··on Python: Faster Way
Why? Because most of the ones they show is that a global lookup is more costly than a local one.

Something that may -very- well change quickly. dict() slower than {}, and so on...

Spidler··on Why Sweden Has So Few Road Deaths
In cities: 40km/h on larger (roads designed to pass traffic through the town) and 30km/h on smaller (streets between blocks and inner-city) is the standard in Norrköping and several other parts of Östergötland. (Sweden)

This, among with _removing_ traffic lights, both in favour of roundabouts, right-side-rule, and raised plaza-crossings (cars have to give way to pedestrians&bikes) have effectively reduced the amount of person damage in collisions. Walking plazas have an interesting effect in that it can cause an increase in small bumper hits on cars, but they reduce the speed of traffic by a lot, and change the flow of the street.

Spidler··on Python: Faster Way
Optimize for readability. Optimize for maintainance. Optimize for consistency. Once those three are done, you can optimize for performance.
Spidler··on Systemd/systemd – shared: add minimal JSON tokenizer
For those who wonder, it's a dependency needed for the userspace parts that import docker images into "native" systemd-nspawn containers.

It's not actually used in pid 1, but in the userspace tooling.

Spidler··on Guido van Rossum: The Theory of Type Hinting for Python 3.5
In some code we have the first 5-10 lines are basically in the shape of : assert isinstance(arg1, type) assert isinstance(arg2, SubObjectClass) And so on. Mainly because we deal in code that deals a lot with traditional types (as in signed 8 bit, Strange-Endian 32bit in 16bit words , and so on) which makes code turn nasty in pretty much any language.

Further down these are cast into more native types, and then walk out into public API's.

And there once more you need to do somewhat strict data-validation.

For these cases, typing rules and annotations will be a boon.

And do note, that there is more common a case of human error or refactoring error that causes problem. Someone sending in a default [] array in an object, and somewhere else it's an expected Boolean.

Spidler··on DBus, FreeDesktop, and lots of madness
Actually, the stuff in the kernel explicitly doesn't care about content of messages.

Also, systemd-dbus has already done away with the XML config files. They are parsed only as legacy/compat mode.

It's oldstyle in London too. Lockers in the basement, lock your laundry in, send a mail off, and get them delivered in time.

Works brilliantly.

Spidler··on TinyCert REST API
We have one of those, a bit more limited as it only works on a single CA.

Give me a week and poke an email to spider@aanstoot.se and I'll see about giving preliminary access.

Spidler··on X86 versus other architectures (Linus Torvalds) (2003)
Fun to see ten years later that this approach by AMD won.

AMD's x86-64 approach is a lot more interesting not so much because of any technical issues, but because AMD _can_ try to avoid the "irrelevant" part. By having a part that _can_ potentially compete in the market against a P4, AMD has something that is worth hoping for. Something that can make a difference.
