Sparkle-san··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I agree with him that systems level thinking is a skill that will only get more valuable and he seems quick to dismiss low-level details. I think the best practitioners will be those that can handle both high-level and low-level thinking.

He "argued" a lot of things over almost 2 hours and very few of his arguments felt particularly cogent nor did they inspire confidence. Neither did the fact that he allegedly doesn't know his own zip code or phone number.
Sparkle-san··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
The evidence doesn't seem to bear this out. Texas has punitive laws around drug use and also plenty of drug users.

The Singapore model is also to be a 750km^2 microstate island. American laws around drugs have always been punitive and you could fit Singapore inside your average county.

That sounds like you were shaped by your upbringing. And honor itself is subjective and shaped by the social context it exists in. I don't believe killing to maintain honor is moral and there are millions of people out there who do because of the context they exist in. Likewise, I do not think it is honorable to make prisoners suffer (such as from excessive heat) when it's something in your control while others do because they were raised to believe that once you have wronged, your own worth as a human is diminished.

As humans, we have the capacity to hold multiple concepts like honor and contextual awareness at the same time when adjudicating a crime. Someone who stole to feed their family when they were in a dire situation should not be given the same sentence as someone who stole for personal gain. Our ability to acknowledge complex situations and deal with them also separates us from animals.

Sparkle-san··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
For a site populated by people that deal with complex technical systems on a daily basis, the idea that systems also exist and shape our outcomes in every day life seems to frequently be a foreign concept.
Sparkle-san··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
That is something that presently happens. So instead, let's improve the conditions of both the outside world and prisons.

Sparkle-san··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
I think that's a pretty fair take on the situation overall. There is the potential of a merger between Tesla and SpaceX which might help him paper over the short-term issues Tesla is facing around deliveries, largely due to the public backlash around his political medling and DOGE.
Sparkle-san··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
Right, that's the point. It doesn't matter if he delivers on his promises as long as people believe he will eventually and the stock goes up. People have also made money investing in Ponzi schemes but they're still Ponzi schemes.
Sparkle-san··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
He's an effective conman for those with money that needs investing. His track record is objectively bad[0] and that doesn't matter as long as he can say the right thing at the right time to keep the stock high and his investors happy and believing that the breakthrough is just around the corner.

Sparkle-san··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
I feel like no-earth orbit is always going to beat out low-earth orbit in the long-term. I live an area that the USDA classifies as rural and I now have multiple fiber options, including municipal. This isn't to say that Starlink doesn't have its place and I only see it becoming more niche over time and facing more competition in the LEO segment.

> I don’t think we should hold our guidelines hostage to pleas for the heart.

I don't think that's an accurate framing of the situation. It's a single post that enough people decided was worthy of being upvoted to the front page. I think allowing the community to decide is far more inline with the spirit of hacker news than the outright banning a category of posts.
