This kind of comment chain helps me remember how amazing uBlock Origin is. I don't see the popup or the inline adverts, and uBlock just works without breaking the site. Amazing.

It just works so well, in fact, that I forget it is there at all, and I am glad to occasionally get these reminders.

Spare_account··on Digital Needle: Ripping vinyl records with a scanner (2013)
FWIW this content is approximately 19 years old (the date in the title is incorrect). Wayback machine has archived content going back to 2002ish.

I'm curious about the date tag (2013)?

Wayback Machine does indeed has archives of the page from 2013 onwards, but while googling "Vinyl-ROM" (inspired by comments in this thread) I found a reference to this exact huji.ac.il page in a comment thread on Halfbakery dating back to 2003:

https://www.halfbakery.com/idea/Vinyl-ROM

In fact the parent URL does have WayBack archives going back to the early 2000s, which include this content. dang: I nominate the date for this item should be listed as 2003.

Are you referring to this picture: https://www.fieggen.com/Dont_Link/finished-Surgeons-Knot.jpg

The perspective of the picture fooled me for a moment too, but this knot is in the usual position.

Spare_account··on AstraZeneca vaccine safe and effective in U.S., Chile, Peru trials
I can't find anything about Norway having 4 fatalities associated with blood clotting.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/scientists-say-they-found-cause...

>Norway registered three cases of CVST, one of them fatal. The country vaccinated around 120,000 people with the shot.

https://sciencenorway.no/covid19/norwegian-experts-say-deadl...

>Holme led the work to find out why three health workers under the age of 50 were hospitalized with serious blood clots and low levels of blood platelets after having taken the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine. One of the health workers died on Monday.

Spare_account··on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade EGA/VGA Comparison
Perhaps I've fallen victim to a regional language difference but even with the most generous interpretation I could manage, the addition of "mate" on the end of your comment left me with the impression that you were being (mildly) aggressive.

I will refer myself to my own quote from the guidelines :-)

Spare_account··on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade EGA/VGA Comparison
From the HN commenting guidelines:

>Please respond to the strongest plausible interpretation of what someone says, not a weaker one that's easier to criticize. Assume good faith.

(preface to state that my personal opinion supports taking the vaccine)

Are there any countries where the vaccine is mandatory? That choice already exists doesn't it?

>Health outcomes associated with vegetarian diets: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

>Conclusions: Vegetarian diets are associated with beneficial effects on the blood lipid profile and a reduced risk of negative health outcomes, including diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and cancer risk. Among vegetarians, SDA vegetarians could represent a subgroup with a further reduced risk of negative health outcomes. Vegetarian diets have adverse outcomes on one-carbon metabolism. The effect of vegetarian diets among pregnant and lactating women requires specific attention. Well-designed prospective studies are warranted to evaluate the consequences of the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy and infancy on later life and of trace element deficits on cancer risks.

Spare_account··on SpaceX Starship SN9 High Altitude Test – Live [video]
Apologies if I'm covering something you're already aware of, but that time is just Tim's (Everyday Astronaut's) best guess at when to start streaming.

The actual launch time is unknown to everyone outside of SpaceX. For SN8 SpaceX published a live stream of their own a few minutes before launch, but we don't even know if they'll do that this time.

Spare_account··on Facebook to move UK users to California terms, avoiding EU privacy rules
I'm British and have a British passport and I permanently reside in the UK but I'm also technically an Irish citizen because my Irish father was born in Ireland.

I have never applied for an Irish passport but I am automatically an Irish citizen based on my ancestry. Does Facebook know this? Do I need to inform them to benefit from GDPR protections on an ongoing basis?

How the hell is any of this enforceable?

Spare_account··on New UK police speed gun can read license plates from half a mile away at night
I was prosecuted and fined for speeding in the UK on the basis of two Police officers' testimony that they observed their own speedometer while following me. A UK Police officer can assert that he saw a thing recorded on a calibrated device and it will stick in court.

I would imagine that a Police officer could testify that he measured the speed using the calibrated device and continued to observe the same vehicle until it was possible to read the number plate.
