SoylentGreenGPT··on "Torturing" LLMs in a Robot Prison Has Triggered the Dumbest Debate in AI Yet
“ Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”

I only extend humanity to things that are breathing.

But let’s accept your premise. LLMs are alive and can feel pain. If this is true, then every time you use them it’s non consensual. Did you get Claude’s permission before you fed it a prompt?

Or when you update a model, are you hurting it?

Did you make Chat sad when you switched from 2.5 to 4.O?

Regardless, I should stop replying. I realize I am trying to convince people that their religious beliefs are silly, and that’s silly of me. Apologies.

Your toaster is not alive. Neither is your TV or your pants. Human beings and animals are alive. LLMs are not. The conflation of humans and LLMs is deeply disturbing.

Does C++ have a soul? Does Pascal have beliefs? Does Basic have a brain?

LLMs are not thinking. They are not alive. It’s just code. Chill out.

SoylentGreenGPT··on Don't Use AI to Write
Don’t use AI to write and don’t use it to edit either. LLMs can’t understand your writing, so the edits and questions about your work will be less helpful than asking another person with knowledge to review.
SoylentGreenGPT··on Can you tell which images are AI-generated?
Exactly, if the words are too easy to read, and clearly not part of a photo used to advertise - then it’s probably AI.
SoylentGreenGPT··on Can you tell which images are AI-generated?
Exactly! The generated images taste different. Also…if you see a perfectly folded towel, it’s probably AI. At least in this set of images.

Next time you eat at McDonald’s try to notice the similarities in how things taste. McDonald’s has a flavor profile across all their foods. Everything is a little sweeter and a little saltier but exactly “McDonald’s-like.” My favorite example is the sauces for chicken nuggets. Regardless of the flavor you get, all the sauces have the same consistency and sort of taste like sweet and sour sauce. The honey mustard, the bbq, the buffalo sauce, and even the ranch all taste McDonaldish.

My working theory is that AI generated content also has a tatse. Once you can taste it, you are able to easily discern genuine content (which has random tastes) from generated content (which taste like the model it comes from).

Highest score is 16,800. Highest streak is 60 in a row.

I just came to HN to see if I won!

Also, I do research on how people perceive images and video. I’ve published a couple papers and did my dissertation on how folks understand moving images.

If you’re the developers of this game I’d love to help you parse this data. B L T P H D at V T dot E D U.

Something we’ve been discussing in our lab is if people can detect the “taste” of AI. Seems if you play this game enough times, you can at least recognize the differences pretty consistently. I’d love to know how rounds of play improves people’s accuracy.

SoylentGreenGPT··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
I read “caring” not “caning” and clicked on the url with hope.

Caring would be more effective than caning. But Singapore gonna Singapore.

SoylentGreenGPT··on How your high school affects your chances of UC Admission
What breakthroughs are coming from high school students?
SoylentGreenGPT··on ChatGPT Health
Understanding drug interactions is the job of pharmacists (who are also doctors…of pharmacy). Instead of asking apple health or ChatGpt about your meds, please try talking to your pharmacist.
SoylentGreenGPT··on The Case Against Generative AI
Ed is insufferable. And for the most part, he is right. LLM’s are propping up the economy, but as a technology these models are not transformative but iterative. At the rate of investment, unless we reach AGI in the next 24 months, then the ROI will not pay off. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do if Ed is right. Maybe I need to move my retirement accounts out of index funds and into cash. But for now, it does seem the market is in a bit of collective psychosis. Sigh.
SoylentGreenGPT··on Ed Zitron is mad as hell
And yet, he’s mostly right about the current AI landscape.
