SomeOldThrow··on Harold Bloom Has Died
I think this sense of cancel culture is overhyped. Harold Bloom’s importance will not be lessened due to his abuse (except perhaps of topical relevance). There is simply a dual importance like we both recognize.
SomeOldThrow··on Apple: We're not handing over Safari URLs to Tencent, just IP addresses
It’s absolutely not an “overly sensationalized piece” when apple does nothing to offer ip-based controls, such as offering the user a choice of which ips to connect to. You have to install little snitch or get super comfortable with packet fence. Apple certainly has the budget to figure this interface out and has for decades but has not. The issue is not capability but chosen business models.
SomeOldThrow··on New rules for contractors have unexpected consequences for strip clubs
> I do not see anything in the bussiness model that precludes raising prices.

I was defining the business model by success with current regulations. I refuse to speculate about market effects beyond the possibility of any change aside from the regulatory change.

> I have nothing against sex work, but it does not strike me as an industry worthy of tax breaks.

Yea I never voted to fund defense contracts either. Yet, those fucks are getting paid. Not much to do about it but vote and revolt.

SomeOldThrow··on Harold Bloom Has Died
How are these contradictory? He is obviously both.
SomeOldThrow··on Harold Bloom Has Died
I don’t believe I have. What do claims of plagiarism have to do with claims of sexual harassment? Your post seems to defame the alleged victim.
SomeOldThrow··on Harold Bloom Has Died
What does this have to do with the accusation? It has nothing to do with his being significant except through the window of his abusing his power.
SomeOldThrow··on New rules for contractors have unexpected consequences for strip clubs
I think the businesses are ruined—they probably legitimately don’t make enough money to pay a living wage and the necessary benefits with their current business model. I don’t see this as a problem in the long term for the strippers—unauditable cash will still rule.

And frankly, let’s start with taxing other places, this really doesn’t strike me as a place of conspicuous tax avoidance compared to, say, the board room.

SomeOldThrow··on Apple of 2019 is the Linux of 2000
Uhh it’s an extremely stupid question if they’re asking for support about a word processor bug visible on screen. Blindly defending arbitrary practices out of context is stupid. Stop doing it.
SomeOldThrow··on Apple of 2019 is the Linux of 2000
Idk, macs are pretty close to worry-free hardware interactions. It’s a plug and forget system. Maybe windows is too by now.
SomeOldThrow··on Apple of 2019 is the Linux of 2000
Can’t we just admit all three major OS’s suck badly for various reasons? Why do we need to pick winners when they all have major usability issues?

* Apple and Microsoft don’t care about your needs at all and provide no route to changing or fixing the software you use. If you aren’t a large corporation you’re nobody. They will NEVER ask your needs but tell you them.

* BSD/Linux with X11 is still working to catch up with basic Windows usability and may already be a suitable replacement for you, but if you want changes they will take years for the community to invest in.

* There are no other options for getting work done.

SomeOldThrow··on My Letter to the Editor of New York Times Magazine
> MCAS existed to make an inherently stable aircraft handle in the same was as previous 737 generations.

I understand this is the attempt, but my understanding is that this is fundamentally impossible and the aircrafts fundamentally handle differently. This is the basis of the allegations of fraud.

SomeOldThrow··on Apple's list of 235 apps that are incompatible with macOS Catalina
....for people who choose to sell software it might be. For users this might not matter much at all. I’d rather they remove the bad parts than keep old software working.

Hope. Media backlash is free.
SomeOldThrow··on Ask HN: What are some well-designed, but less well-known native Mac apps?
I use it pretty heavily myself so I might be mischaracterizing the actual rate.
SomeOldThrow··on Ask HN: What are some well-designed, but less well-known native Mac apps?
I use it too and save often folks, it crashes frequently.

Still a much, much, much better interface than postman/insomnia.

SomeOldThrow··on Ask HN: What are some well-designed, but less well-known native Mac apps?
It used to work great on iOS until Apple crippled it.
SomeOldThrow··on iPadOS review: The iPad is dead, long live the iPad
Whatever. The iPad is still a toy when your ide fails.
SomeOldThrow··on Photos of Kids Are Powering Surveillance Technology
Like most privacy issues the issue is scale. None of these people ever explicitly consented to the use of their data this way. Change is often sensible when encountering new information or understanding of an existing situation.

Hell, I can't believe you're expressing any confusion. This is a pretty simple abuse of trust, apparently attributable to Flickr/Yahoo. It's almost like it's completely normal to not base your emotional reaction on copyright licenses—the outrage is legitimate no matter how legally protected the abuser is.

SomeOldThrow··on iPadOS review: The iPad is dead, long live the iPad
There’s no IDE that can compete with unix.
SomeOldThrow··on Why Enterprise Software Sucks
And it would be ludicrous to interpret me that way! The part that implies the dysfunctional organization is “enterprises”.
SomeOldThrow··on Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and eBay exit Facebook’s Libra project
A more accurate term than “crypto” would be “private currency”. It offers very few of the benefits other cryptocurrencies offer (to non capitalists) except for resilience to the failure of a single state issued currency. “Crypto” is a complete red herring.
SomeOldThrow··on Why Enterprise Software Sucks
> The real reason enterprise software sucks is that enterprises have complex and unique workflows and would prefer to buy software that they can fit to their workflow rather than change the workflows of their profitable business with tens of thousands of staff who will need retraining.

Bingo—the dysfunction of the software reflects the dysfunction of the organization.

SomeOldThrow··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
> Furthermore the editor of the Wall Street Journal who published your editorial might suffer some backlash for the utterly weird thing they chose to publish, but they would not be fined or imprisoned or tortured or executed by any state-run apparatus (as they would in China).

I recommend reading manufacturing consent. Censorship is entirely unnecessary and you hit on the core social mechanism there.

SomeOldThrow··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
The media is doing all the reacting. Where are you getting this pulse from?
SomeOldThrow··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
> The press in the United States is and remains free to publish (virtually) whatever it wants about federal, state, and local government.

This doesn’t mean much if they don’t use this power and instead publish random bullshit. The western way has never been censorship, it’s been straight up lying.

SomeOldThrow··on String Theory Does Not Win a Nobel, and I Win a Long Bet
We must not be discussing the same thing.

EDIT: yup, I am not knowledgable enough to be in this conversation.

SomeOldThrow··on String Theory Does Not Win a Nobel, and I Win a Long Bet
How is holography any more concrete than string theory? It is just as untestable.
SomeOldThrow··on China attacks Apple for allowing Hong Kong crowdsourced police activity app
I’ll admit, I don’t see apple supporting the equivalent app for, say, the US.
SomeOldThrow··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
The west employs this tactic too but calls it a sanction or embargo.
SomeOldThrow··on 'We good now China?' South Park creators issue mock apology
Complaining about Reagan didn’t do much to protect us anyway, we gave our power away willingly.
