SomeHacker44··on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks
Agree. My Model 3 is a usability disaster. Even having hard keys around the edge would be way better, like my avionics.
SomeHacker44··on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks
That latter is what really surprised me in 3 years of Model 3. Except to repair a punctured tire, no maintenance yet in over 20,000 miles. They recommend changing the air filters but I did not.
SomeHacker44··on 140 Megapixel Picture of the Sun
Photographers think of "RAW" as the unmodified original data from the image sensor. It is raw in the sense that no further processing has been applied yet to make a human viewable image (or whatever you want to do with it). It would need to be demosaic'd, adjusted for lens distortion, have dynamic range and gamma adjustments, and other things to make a nice image for humans to view.
SomeHacker44··on What we know about the Apple Neural Engine
See other commenter above about GeoHot's analysis which is much more in depth.
SomeHacker44··on First video of 56 transition controls for a triple inverted pendulum
It probably can do this because each link is a different length, therefore has a different resonant frequency, and the slider can therefore target each one individually by layering each frequency on top of the others like an inverse FFT.

I imagine if they were all the same length it would not be possible.

SomeHacker44··on YouTube TV raises subscription to $72.99, inching closer to cable pricing
I would look into it, but I believe the FCC has preempted antenna rules. Last I looked (maybe 15 yrs ago) that was the case for me.
SomeHacker44··on Generating aerial imagery with your iPhone's Lidar sensor
AFAIK Tesla never had lidar. They had and will again have simple radar.
SomeHacker44··on Our production servers were suspended by Google Cloud
How do you get such a contract at the big providers?
SomeHacker44··on Ask HN: More magazines like Quanta and Noema?
Since nobody shared the Quanta URL yet: https://www.quantamagazine.org
SomeHacker44··on SVB chief pressed Congress to weaken risk regulations
There are already accounts that do this for you - split large sums automatically across numerous insured accounts.
SomeHacker44··on SVB chief pressed Congress to weaken risk regulations
Categorically this should not be capitalism and is not actually in my understanding. It is the opposite of the definition, or at least the original definition. It is regulatory capture by wealthy parties that force the government to protect their wealth and then use capitalism to ensure that the government does not materially improve the lot of the non wealthy.
SomeHacker44··on SVB chief pressed Congress to weaken risk regulations
I agree. Bailouts are bad because they lead people to ignore risk, especially people who should know better, like investors and people with > $250,000 in a single account. Furthermore, we seem to bail out wealthy parties much more regularly than poor parties... Where is the bailout or simple assistance for people who cannot afford basic necessities or housing due to overall economic conditions? But poor Roku may get a half billion bailout.
SomeHacker44··on How to Yubikey
I found that four were the right number of keys, not two. One for the permanent safe, one for the keyring, one for offsite storage at another location (like office) and one to leave in the computer.
SomeHacker44··on Modern Symbolics Lisp Machine Keyboard Replica: Keymacs A620N-88
Symbolics did not use fiber optics; you are probably thinking the TI Explorer.
SomeHacker44··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
In NYC, B&H has free next day delivery and many of the same tech products. Microcenter has nice stores and price matches.
SomeHacker44··on Core64: Interactive Core Memory Kit
I picked up one of these at VCF East a few years ago. Neat stuff!
SomeHacker44··on Wolfram Language and Mathematica Free on Every Raspberry Pi
I bought a one time home license for like $200ish a number of years ago and it still works, and will likely work forever. I have transferred it between computers and even OSes over time. Worth it. I pay as much for JetBrains annuallt and way more for the Adobe stuff I use maybe twice a year.
SomeHacker44··on TIL: You Can Stop Updating Copyright Attribution Years (2021)
"Expire" is very loose here. Anything made today or even in my lifetime will not have an expiration useful to me in my lifetime. The expiration should be in 10 years with two paid 10 year extensions. Or something. But that is a whole other can of worms and my opinion only.
SomeHacker44··on Running large language models like ChatGPT on a single GPU
I do not know anyone offhand with a 200+GB RAM home computer. The GPU is not all that is needed; you need to keep the parameters and other stuff in memory too.
SomeHacker44··on Why Most Gun Laws Aren’t Backed Up by Evidence
Guns were allowed only in service of militia duties.
SomeHacker44··on Microsoft permanently disables Internet Explorer for all devices
Now if they would allow me to permanently disable Edge for PDFs. Every week and sometimes several times a week I need to reset Windows 10 default PDF reader off of Edge and back to SumatraPDF. Or delete Edge entirely.
SomeHacker44··on The Little Learner: A Straight Line to Deep Learning
I went through some of the eBook providers but none seem to be offering a PDF version. Did anyone notice if a PDF version was for sale?
SomeHacker44··on Visual design rules you can safely follow
I do not understand the first rule. I want pure black backgrounds, even if "you" wont give me pure white foreground letters. This has become more and more important as I have aged. Maximum contrast please. Especially on OLED.

SomeHacker44··on A cab ride I'll never forget (1999)
Word. I cannot remember the last HN article that had me in tears.
SomeHacker44··on I Tried JetBrains' “New UI” and I Liked It
I am just one person but a long-time user of JetBrains IDEs and have a personal all packs "subscription". I clicked the new UI and was so unprepared for the total lack of UX affordance that I literally could not switch back soon enough. I have plenty of screen space - please give me a UX that uses it to make things discoverable and easy to find!!
SomeHacker44··on Undo codes for Japanese elevator floor buttons
I feel canceling floors is unsafe and can permit abusive use of the elevator by predators of all sorts.
SomeHacker44··on Taking Sex Differences in Personality Seriously (2019)
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing your story and participating in the discussion. I looked some of these things up with a search engine, but do not know what to trust. Regarding progesterone I saw a few places assert that it increases testosterone (example link below), but it did not discuss the mixed case with E(strogen) you mention.

SomeHacker44··on Stone tablet shows Babylonians able to approximate √2 with 99.9999% accuracy
1.7 is about 20% off of accurate. 0.3 to 7.0 seem to be within the range of what 20% accurate would mean (1/5th to 5x the actual value).

The thread shows what they mean a few tweets in.

SomeHacker44··on Installing an Ethernet card and video card and other upgrades for a Mac SE/30
Cessna did this half a century ago themselves and called it a Citation. :)
