SomeHacker44··on Making a micro Linux distro (2023)
A version of this that targeted RPi would be neat!
SomeHacker44··on IDEs we had 30 years ago and lost (2023)
We had Symbolics Genera, not mentioned, and way better than anything else mentioned here, IMO.
SomeHacker44··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
I have reduced transparency turned on in iPadOS accessibility forever. However there is so much gratuitous transparency now I can barely use half the features. Why do I need to see behind quick settings to adjust brightness? Or do anything? This new update has made me miserable. It never even asked me if I wanted to upgrade. Which I would never want anyway. I only use one, exactly one app... Foreflight.
SomeHacker44··on Removing these 50 objects from orbit would cut danger from space junk in half
I always thought the scenes in Wall-E showing the space ships colliding with all the space junk were horribly unrealistic. They should show the space ships exploding and all the humans and bots perishing.
SomeHacker44··on The history of cataract surgery
I was under the impression that modern replacement lenses could flex under muscular control like the lenses of pre-presbyopic people. That was not mentioned in the article though. I am not hoping for cataracts but I thought that would be a nice boon to having the surgery, not needing progressives.
SomeHacker44··on Teardown of Apple 40W dynamic power adapter with 60W max
I also like these chargers. I use adapters to several companies' proprietary charging ports. I like they will do 240W in a SFF and have bonus USB-C ports for my phone and tablet (or whatever).

Regarding ChargerLAB's products:

I have an HP Zbook G1a laptop that uses 140W USB PD charging. However, except for the HP charger, I have not found a charger or cable pair that works. After a while they start cycling charging on and off. Under heavy load that happens almost immediately. Under light loads it might take hours.

Is there a ChargerLAB product that can explain what exactly is going on between the computer and the charger?

I have used Anker, Insignia and some random USB-C PD chargers and cables rated for 100-140-240W from various vendors.

SomeHacker44··on A new experimental Google app for Windows
I cannot tell.

Is this a whole system indexing application? Instant search across all installed documents? I have nearly 40TB on my primary windows desktop computer and would LOVE that. Granted much of that is decades of home video but still.

SomeHacker44··on Analyzing the memory ordering models of the Apple M1
Using Android Firefox:

Your browser is outdated Update your browser to view ScienceDirect correctly.

Guess I won't read this.

SomeHacker44··on 486Tang – 486 on a credit-card-sized FPGA board
Silly question. Are there any 486-compatible small CPUs that could be embedded into a project instead of using an FPGA? Given that AMD, Intel and others have the ability to make 486-compatible processors currently, I would have thought you could just buy a CPU or SoC to run 486 code.
SomeHacker44··on I don't like curved displays
Not so sure. When I first started wearing glasses for astigmatism, it turned rectangles into trapezoids. Totally destroyed my depth perception. After a while I got used to it and stopped walking into curbs and buildings. Later in life I moved to progressive lenses. The straight lines then became curves. Adjusted after a while again, but the curves never fully went away. Regardless, I have to take the glasses off for sports that require good depth perception like ping pong or tennis.
SomeHacker44··on Spiral
"100KiB images"... This is odd. Most of my images are 2.5-4 MB. My raw images are 3-10x larger.
SomeHacker44··on Red: A programming language inspired by REBOL
The FPGA software from Xilinx and Altera are scripted with Tcl/Tk.
SomeHacker44··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
This reminds me of the interesting articles over the last few years about the heat from the London metro system over the last century saturating the ground so the tubes have become extremely hot.
SomeHacker44··on The oldest unopened bottle of wine in the world

SomeHacker44··on Cisco announces mass layoffs just after soaring revenue report
221 now means mass?.The article does not even show a percentage. Bad headline. -1
SomeHacker44··on Pixel 10 Phones
I like that I can run whatever software I want on it.

I do not like that it is overly locked down without rooting. But still way more open than iOS, regardless of what the mobile phone lawsuits from Epic decided.

SomeHacker44··on Pixel 10 Phones
I got a Motorola Razr 2025 Ultra. You can use it closed. Open it is narrower but taller than a Pixel. It fits in my pocket easily.
SomeHacker44··on Australian court finds Apple, Google guilty of being anticompetitive
I did some... Googling.... Anyway, it seems many sites estimate iOS as about 57% of the US market, not 20%.

SomeHacker44··on The Framework Desktop is a beast
Indeed. I have an AMD 9950X and an Asus X870E* motherboard. I can barely get the system to boot with one 32G DIMM let alone 2 or 4, and 48G DIMMS are even worse for some reason. I have tried 3 different "matched" sets. Sometimes I have to reset the system 3 times or more before it will boot; it hangs or crashes on DDR timing BIOS codes. I have given up and just use a single 32G despite how useless 32G is in a high end desktop today. Real joke. Huge waste of money. I will buy prebiilt systems in the future. In the meantime if I need a lot of RAM I use an Intel 14900K desktop or my new HP G1a Zbook.

SomeHacker44··on The Framework Desktop is a beast
I have the HP Zbook G1a running the same CPU and RAM under HP Ubuntu. I have not seen any OOTB way to use the TPU. I can get ROCm software to run but it does not use it. No system tools show its activity that I can see. It seems to be a marketing gimmick. Shame.
SomeHacker44··on Drafting Software Recommendation
For my home use, I use Home Designer by Chief Architect. Commercial, but clicked with me. I bought the most costly version after using the least costly for a few months, all with perpetual license.
SomeHacker44··on The future of climate change may not be what you think
Good, as far as I can read. Paywalled as it was getting interesting.
SomeHacker44··on The hunt for a perfect laptop continues
I just got an HP Zbook Ultra G1a with 128G. I added a 4T 990 Pro SSD and loaded HP OEM Ubuntu 24.04, then kubuntu-desktop. I added AMDGPU software for OpenCL. Except for no dGPU, it seems like a near perfect laptop. Great OLED touch screen, decent keyboard, 4 USB ports plus HDMI.

I had to remap the home/end/ins keys which were oddly placed. It has that useless and totally annoying CoPilot key that cannot be remapped either since touching it sends multiple keystrokes both down and up.

SomeHacker44··on 7-Zip 25.00
I wish there were an easy way to get Explorer not to show Zip files as a "folder." Such a huge anti feature for me.
SomeHacker44··on ADXL345 (2024)
This was a nice writeup and teardown, similar to the ones our fellow HN member kens does.
SomeHacker44··on Copper is Faster than Fiber (2017) [pdf]
I wonder how much better hollow core fiber would be. My guess is faster than copper, even given the conversion and retimer latencies.
SomeHacker44··on Sound As Pure Form: Music Language Inspired by Supercollider, APL, and Forth
Seems to be MacOS only.
SomeHacker44··on The Art of Lisp and Writing (2003)
This is a primary reason why I do not use Apple products. I use Windows and Linux on my laptops, and even have a ChromeBook. I use a SteamDeck as a console. I use Android phones, tablets and eReaders. I use Android based TVs and streamers. Even if I never code a line for them, I like that I could.
SomeHacker44··on Memory Consistency Models: A Tutorial
While this was a fine article, it was vastly too limited. I would have preferred a much more in depth discussion of common CPU memory models and programming language models, and how they interact, and how programmers can build a mental model of what is going on. Unlike another commenter, I learned nothing (except maybe an article link for a first year CS or CE student, or even a high schooler or precocious pre-teen), which was the only reason I read the article!
