SoftwarePatent··on What American digital nomads can learn from people who live in RVs
No, I have used a few accountants in the past when I was a nomad but never found someone I'd recommend. I'd love to hear from any others here if they have someone they'd recommend, since I could use a new one myself.

Washington is a great place to be! If you start a digital nomad trip from there, your state taxes will be as simple as possible.

Regarding being dual-taxed, the US has dual taxation treaties with almost every country, so you can deduct the taxes you pay to another country from your US taxes. e.g. If you move to France, you'll pay taxes there, and when you file in the US you'll get credit for those taxes paid. There are numerous other complications for federal taxes as well! But you probably won't flat-out pay double.

SoftwarePatent··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
+1 this works! I’ve seen it called “urge surfing.”
SoftwarePatent··on I'm a digital nomad. Should I renounce my US citizenship?
The article also talks about Eduardo Saverin, born Brazilian, become American, then renounced in favor of Singapore.
SoftwarePatent··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Awesome site! I love moving around the sun like some kind of god.

SoftwarePatent··on Relay Hooks: Improved React APIs for Relay
> In addition, the new APIs allow developers to more quickly show content to users by starting to fetch data before a component renders. Prefetching data in this way is not possible with the container-based APIs.

This is fantastic, prefetching can make for a great user experience.

SoftwarePatent··on Show HN: My startup, a game server SaaS

SoftwarePatent··on Show HN: My startup, a game server SaaS
Founder here. I'm obsessed with performance! Users love snappy web apps.
SoftwarePatent··on Show HN: My startup, a game server SaaS
Hi! Founder here. Thanks for finding a bug in my privacy policy, I'll fix that. :/

I wrote a rails web app running on heroku. For the game server binaries, I spun up a server in a data center and control it using bash scripts that run in background jobs on heroku. I wrote jobs to do various tasks, like update config file, restart server, create initial server.

Let me know if you want more info!

SoftwarePatent··on Don't Over-React to the Facebook Patents License
I call bullshit

> Unless a company decides to sue Facebook (or accuse its products), the termination trigger has no actual effect.

Please everyone, don't rely on this advice.

SoftwarePatent··on How Bad Are Zillow “Zestimates”?
This article deserves the heavy criticism it has received here. I'll go further and say it is part of a trend you might call skepticism gone wrong. This is a intellectual movement that "throws the baby out with the bathwater" because they are so skeptical that they don't believe anything!

Many authors in this vein have read about, for example, cognitive bias, the many invalid results in scientific journals and the hoax/fake news/infowars trend. They see every human action as a result of bias, every result as invalid, and every news article as part of a misinformation campaign.

Having the most accurate possible understanding of the world we live in is only possibly by trusting information sources which deserve it, understanding the limits of what "quick and dirty" statistical analysis is capable of, and recognizing when people are influenced by bias, and also when people are acting with full awareness of bias.

SoftwarePatent··on Rwanda is becoming a hub for expanding tech companies
This journalist [1] wrote a great book [2] about the lack of press freedom in Rwanda, and western complicity in press crackdowns. He's an amazing guy--accepted a job at Goldman during college, then reneged on the job to fly one-way to Africa and become a freelance journalist. That's without any experience as a journalist!

SoftwarePatent··on Ask HN: Single Person startup/company?
> "Coding is easy, marketing is hard"

It took me over five years in this business to fully internalize this. Programmers (me included) often complain about clueless entrepreneurs in this business, but even more rare than a good programmer is a good entrepreneur, who can sell/market and turn code into money.

SoftwarePatent··on What and How Much It Takes to Build an Office in the Indian Capital?
Looking at their jobs page, I'm a bit shocked at how low salaries are in India

https://angel.co/adpushup/jobs/

1,000,000.00 INR = 13,985.88 EUR

and that's the top rate for the senior JS dev position.

SoftwarePatent··on Ask HN: Interviewing, what did I do wrong?
Do not take this personally. Companies make mistakes in the interviewing process and reject great people all the time. I have seen some absolutely amazing programmers with the chops to work anywhere look for jobs. There is always at least one company that rejects them. It's their loss.

Do not assume that you did something wrong. The mistake could be on their part. You made it through all of those technical interviews, so you will be able to find work somewhere!

SoftwarePatent··on Dad gets OfficeMax mail addressed 'Daughter Killed in Car Crash'
patio11, you're usually right on the money, but not this time. While it is true that the programming mistake was probably small, the end result was catastrophic for these parents. I would ask you to step back and reevaluate your "take on consensual reality" in this case. And at what point did anyone consent to being marketed to as grieving parents?
SoftwarePatent··on Algernon's Law
> it’s not too surprising that human medicine may be largely wasted effort or harmful 13 (although most - especially doctors - would strenuously deny this).

This claim requires evidence, but the citation is to a blog post about nutrition, not medicine.

That may have worked well there, but this stunt is well-targeted to the culture at UChicago. We love this kind of quirky stuff.
