Thanks for the link. This one was also posted awhile back in a rust comment and when I first read it, I thought Google had used Rust in the V8 sandbox, but re-reading it seems that the article uses Rust as an ‘example’ of a memory safe language but does not explicitly say that it uses Rust. Maybe someone with more knowledge can confirm that Rust was (or was not) used in the V8 Google Chrome sandbox example….
Second Liquibase. Plugins like JPA Buddy can generate the scripts (Liquibase/flyway) from the DB or JPA Entities. The XML scripts are not difficult to write by hand and can use straight SQL when needed. Since you can generate the actual SQL script from XML it’s great for org’s that need a DBA to run the script on PROD since you can send them a copy for review and they just need to hit run, while keeping the XML in the projects code repository. There may be other tools for solo development that might be more straightforward and look forward to the answers posted here.
Thank you. Been doing the Rust book
https://rust-book.cs.brown.edu/
Super interested in building CLI tools (HPC) and WASM to use Rust from JS (do a lot of front end work) and this appears to cover all of that plus some. Looking at the code is obviously over my head now, but nice to have examples that I can clone and build to learn.
IMO taking Calculus later in life is probably easier for most (study of 1) people (assuming you have seen some of it before). I took Calculus at 19 years old and passed but I did not have any idea what it was really used for. Taking it again during Grad School (mid 30s) Calculus made way more sense. Ideas would click (mostly not CS related) but more in the general world view (think washers for nuts and bolts – area under a curve). I will be the first to admit that making front ends and tuning a DB will almost never need any calculus (but it does happen) and admit I did horrible in high school but turned it around in college (I was behind when I got there the first time for sure). How much do I remember right this second (not much), but I do feel its worth doing as if only a right of passage to say we deserve that 6-figure salary and maybe not feel too bad about calling our self’s engineers.
Good luck with the singing lessons and new job, but if your married (or have children) do NOT quit that day job just yet If not, well hell go for it my friend!!!
This is great. Code seems to have good comments / jsdoc from the bit studied, tests and all. Will take a closer look in the morning but congratulations on the release.
Been on HN off and on for about 9 years with different accounts. I do believe the comments are getting more difficult to parse (find the good vs noise) but still the best site I have found - is hand curated links and people willing to offer solid advice given a question in the comments. I use Reddit from time to time but only for pure time killing purposes. I have learned more from the comments on HN than any course, book or (other) web site. Hopefully it will stay that way for years to come. A smaller community could offer more quality responses but less chance of finding the person who has the answer to your question.
If this is for real would-be game changing. The problem with alcohol is it works but the more often you drink the more it takes to feel the same effects. Hence being over the legal limit but not feeling ‘wasted’. The unnecessary calories are also a problem, did you eat; why pork chop in every beer. Seems that people who already have an alcohol tolerance will not feel much if they use synthetic Gaba, so a 2/3-week break is needed to experience the pleasure of Alcarelle (based on my reading). Social drinking is a great way to have some fun with co-workers and old friends, but something like this would give those who do not drink an opportunity to open without the guilt of drinking. I love a good buzz but also want to set a good example for my children and really hate the empty calories. Seems Alcarelle will have the same problem with the tolerance but seems like it will just not work anymore and require another break (which is not a bad thing). Very interested in the product but seems to be 3-5 years out before its mainstream.
Has anyone tried this product that seems to be using the same technology but is already on the market?
Seems to be the ‘natural’ version of the substance. I also have heard people talk about taking straight Gaba in pill or powder form and wonder how Alcarelle differs (is not clear from a quick search).
Agree with you about needing to click the site and about reading comments. I always read the comments first to see if the link is worth the click (paywall, waste of time, huge banners, scam site, etc.) Big shout out to those folks who are reading the articles and leaving comments for the rest of us. I am guilty of not commenting much on this platform mostly because even with all my experience rarely will my comment add to the discussion.
I have made the game of life at least a dozen times in every new language I learn and am already thinking about how this is done. Even having a few example patterns the user can start with is sometimes a hassle depending on the implementation. This site has almost still life’s, oscillators and spaceships combined into an infinite number of layers (not sure it has all did not verify). The pattern does appear to be repeated but just getting the base layers is very impressive.
I find this idea interesting ‘These are possible in JavaScript in browsers, but implementation quality varies a lot and many web devs just never bother.’
Do you have any examples that you consider good implementations? I ask because tables seem to be the biggest offenders of slow components in say Angular / PrimeNG. I am going to a legacy app soon that is being updated (Angular but not PrimeNG). Would like to see if we can build a feature rich table that is more performant than the PrimeNG one that I know looks amazing but is the cause of many headaches.
NOTE: its not Angular or PrimeNG specifically that make the tables slow/hogs, but the amount of DOM elements inside and some of the implementation details that I disagree with (functions that are called withing the HTML being evaluated every tick). Would be great to see if this idea of a ‘recycler widget’ can help us. Cheers.
Been slinging code since 1999 (practicum/internship). Started writing InstallShield scripts and Junit tests (Junit 1.0). Next 10 years were Java / C++ / VisualBasic. Was always trying to avoid the JavaScript revolution (I am a real programmer I said lol). Fast forward to today and I sling TypeScript / Angular / Java as a Senior Software Engineer. Had the chance to move up about 2 years ago and did not even apply (need to apply for promotions at the company I am at). Everyone asked why and I see what happens to my coworkers once they do. Still expected to support every app they have ever worked on and do 8+ hours of meetings a day. The pay is more but so is the stress. I have a great family and just want to enjoy my life. I also work a second job facilitating online courses for a major University when I want to pick up a course and make my fun money (plus get to learn more than any of the students in the courses). I still love coding be it evergreen or legacy. I am not ruling out moving up the ladder, but for now still happy slinging code…. I guess if you have 20 years in I only have slightly more, but man I see the burnout above me (talking to people who were once joyful and fun to be around, now snippy and stressed) and just want to enjoy life.
I second weather dot gov mapclick. This makes me want to finally fix my PWA that used the Dark Sky API that quit working in 2023. This PWA also had a feature to click an icon and feed the long/lat into the mapclick URL which is the feature I used most often. I had a bookmark for a free replacement API for Dark Sky (that I got from HN) but have since re-formatted my computer. I know slightly off topic, but does anyone have a recommendation for a good free (couple users a day) weather API? Any suggestions would be appreciated as this has given me the motivation to hook it back up. Cheers.
While I agree with you and understand that the data is local only, we can only use tools approved by the company. I would like to suggest that my team take Bruno for a 3 – 6 month test drive (since Postman was unable to check the boxes) but cannot without approval….
Hi Annop. Thanks for sharing this looks like a good alternative to Postman. I see the company is based out of India (awesome) but wanted to know if the company has gone through the steps needed to sell to teams in the healthcare industry in the US/UK i.e.) HIPPA, SOX2, PCI, GDPR, etc.…
Sorry for the confusion, it’s not like a text log on the server. API A is calling API B. API B grabs the data from the data store, before sending to API A – API B logs the JSON in the same data store that the data is coming from. When end user of API A says did you send me the right info, end user in API A says yes I can see the data being sent via UI. I mean yes this could all be ONES and ZEROS but nice to let some admin user prove to other user that data was sent VIA JSON object that API A accepts. IDK they are all ONES and ZEROS some are just easier for end user to grok.
Gotta agrees here. How many times a day do you get asked what data did your API send to my API? For me it’s daily. Need a format that is logged and able to be displayed in an admin UI somewhere, so a DB query is not needed to prove yes A was sent to you so if A is not in your system, then it’s an issue on the other side. I would not want to debug an API that talked to another API in binary…. I mean XML or JSON is still better than binary… I love applying for jobs that ask if I know JASON because the answer is always yes when its XML I don’t know anyone by that name
Question in the Waterken-Key flow with token in the URL fragment the URL looks like HTTPS www.example.com/APP/#mhbqcmmva5ja3 – but in the diagram its hitting example.com/API/#mhbqcmmva5ja3
Is this a type-o OR are we mapping APP to API with the proxy so the user thinks they are going to the APP with their Key. Or does the browser do us for us automatically when it sees app in the URL and then stores the key in window.location.hash. I am confused and might just find the answer on Google but since you appear to be the author maybe you can answer the question here.
Note sure if you have gone very far into the Eloquent JS book but if you do it online it’s interactive. You read a little bit and then write code directly on the page. You then run it to see if it works or go back and read what you missed to correct it. Don’t get me wrong you cannot do the ‘projects’ and other parts are meant to run local, but for learning something quick the online version is all you need. Read, program, read, program…..
One hundred percent agree on both this book and the “You don’t know JavaScript”. Both are free (search Kyle Simpson GitHub). I ended up buying the YDKJ first edition paperbacks but see the second edition of all of them are done or a work in progress. EJs is the one I tell my students to start with as IMO is more of a programming book that just happens to us JS. I can tell the ones that read it (it’s optional) and the ones that do not. I do a few random chapters every year and learn something that I either missed or forgot I knew every time. I am mostly using TS these days but also enjoy vanilla JS for side projects and prototypes. Note the YDKJ books can come off as very ‘only my opinion is the right one’ kind of like JS the good parts but just look past that and absorb the content, what you do with it after that is up to you regardless of the author’s opinion.
Really loved the article. Have been in computing for along time and never heard this story in such detail. Looking forward to the upcoming articles you mention....
Nice job on the game! Fully usable on my iPhone and only took me like 7 tries to actually land. Bookmarked to study the code and learn how you achieved such a nice end result. Thanks for posting.
Used to love the jokes at the end of the initial scene. Was always a dead person and had the one liner that would make you laugh. They still try to do it today in Law and Order but no one can deliver them they way he did. RIP.
I second the home gym. Got a fairly inexpensive progear rack, progear bench, and go beast dip rack. I already had the 45lb bar, curl bar and 300lbs of weights from a previous set so the upgrade was pretty seamless. Bought the cable pull down separately off Amazon for 1/4 of the price. Can now do almost every type of lift with no spotter. Yes is does take up most of a small room in my basement but for being in my 40s think I am the best shape of my life minus lung power hard for me to believe that. If you don’t have room push-ups pull-ups (playground near by?), sit-ups and jogging will be better than nothing. Also recommend an e-bike. Still get exercise but can travel faster and further making it practical. If you have money left over grab a one-wheel great for the core and closest thing to snowboard in the summer. Also great winter (snow) for snowboarding/skiing this year. Wow after writing that all out now know where all my money went, but hey it’s for my health. Cheers!
Just wanted to say feel your pain. My team was recently disbanded to other teams because our product has no issues and we were considered too slow. Fast forward just released a shiny new front end that is buggy and slow. 4 hot fixes in a month. At my review they said see getting you on a new team was all it took to speed you up. Well ya I guess no unit testing, and no documentation. At least I got the team to start using the linter. Another benefit is I have more family time and been working on a side project to ensure I don’t forget how to do things correctly lol. Always think this place is going to be different but timelines are king and those who hit them will be rewarded. Also can’t get much faster than 4 releases in a month which is all the boss sees on paper…
I have recommended to beginners before and most of them thanked me. I skimmed the page for your book but did not see the link to the free version. I am on mobile so maybe just missed it. Says read free here, but here is not a link. Clicking the book takes you to Amazon.
I second eloquent JavaScript. Been doing this book since v1 and recommend to just about anyone that asks for recommendations. I use typescript daily and have been hoping that this book gets updated for TS although it would be hard since it uses lots of JS tricks that may or may not be best practices in TS. Technically just renaming the files from .js to .TS would work the linter would go crazy
