Smrchy··on There's something off about LED bulbs
Check out https://www.occhio.com/en-lv/about-light/light-quality/outst... for some high end lights...
Smrchy··on Previous: A NeXT Computer Emulator
I am looking for a way to run Lotus Improv - which was a cool piece of software back then. Did anybody get this to run?
Smrchy··on ClickHouse, Inc.
No, the results are embedded in a web app.
Smrchy··on ClickHouse, Inc.
I'd like to thank the creators of ClickHouse as i hope they are reading here. We've been using it since 2019 in a single server setup with billions of rows. No problems at all. And query speeds that seem unreal compared to MySQL and pg.

As we did not want to go into the HA/backup/restore details at that time we created a solution that can be quickly recreated from data in other databases.

Interesting presentation from Alexey about Features and Roadmap from May 2021:

Smrchy··on Ethiopia Plants 350M Trees in One Day to Combat Drought and Climate Change
The US already has the cleanest of water and air. No need to do anything when you are leading the others bigly.
Smrchy··on Nest, the company, died at Google I/O 2019
Good thing i never bought a Nest device. As with most "Google made" devices the lifespan and their commitment to support a product are abysmal.

Honestly we need to change the way we think about products - especially household products like those Nest was selling. No way can i save money with it if i pay 300$ and it gets killed after 2 or 3 years. And i'm not even talking about the environmental aspects.

The documentary about Dieter Rams makes me long for more designers who understand their responsibility.

Smrchy··on This is the best drone according to Amazon? – The HS100
It would be really nice to have a browser extension that shows the amount of other reviews every reviewer has in the last n months. Someone with 20+ review can not really be trusted and can be filtered out.

Or even better: If Amazon would spend some of their AI departments time and delete those fake reviews on a daily basis. So tired of them.

Smrchy··on Google Cloud Storage Nearline graduates to general availability
Very nice. We've been looking into this but the "beta" status kept us away.

So the bigger news here is Google Nearline Storage graduating to general availability.

Smrchy··on RSMQ: A lightweight Redis based message queue for Node.js
It's not exactly "once". It's exactly "one" within a defined period of time. So in that articles context it would be the "at-least-once" variant.

If the recipient fails to process the message for some reason it will reappear after the visibility timeout.

Smrchy··on French National Assembly approved Internet traffic monitoring system (French)
Richard Stallman wrote https://stallman.org/millions.html a few days after the 9/11 attacks.

Sadly still so true. The attacks from January 2015 have led to this horrible secondary damage.

Smrchy··on Wire – Modern Communications Network
Nice first impression. Some issues though: No video chat. That's the main thing i use skype for. Sound goes through my Macs default settings. I can change the microphone to my headset but not the output. If i change the output to headset it will also change this for my music which is annoying.
Smrchy··on Uber ordered to halt transportation services in Germany
I live in Germany and i am happy that some things are more regulated here.

I like that Taxi companies need to have extra insurance and the cars and drivers are checked on a regular basis. Just like the TÜV (a mandatory checkup every two years for every vehicle) makes sure all vehicles have functioning lights, brakes, proper tires etc.

This ruling only makes sure Uber follows those same rules other transportation businesses follow as well. There is competition in the transportation business here but there is no room for people sidestepping completely sane rules everybody should agree on.

I am in no way affiliated with the taxi business and i like lower fares too. But not at the cost of safety and less checks for cars and drivers.

Once Uber agrees to comply i am happy to use their app and their drivers. I doubt they will be able to operate much cheaper though - i am fine with that.

Smrchy··on Two big announcements
We are still using the old Basecamp version because time tracking didn't make it into the relaunched version. Maybe you guys add time tracking now?
Smrchy··on Bitcoin Companies and Entrepreneurs Can't Get Bank Accounts
It's a good thing that the success of Bitcoin does not depend on US banks or the US government. The US could try to delay and slow Bitcoin. But stop?

Like trying to ban US citizens to gamble online.

Smrchy··on Introducing Login and Pay with Amazon
I just wish Amazon would not talk about 200m accounts worldwide and then offering payments only for US customers.
Smrchy··on Push Notifications to Mobile Devices Using Amazon SNS
I'm using https://pushover.net/

Easy to integrate and all you really need to pay is the iPhone App.

Smrchy··on Latvia blocking extradition of Gozi writer due to disproportionate US sentencing
If only the US would not have such disproportionate blind eyes towards the Wall Street bankers.
Smrchy··on U.S. bugged EU offices, computer networks
What could you do with all this money the US is spending on making the rest of the world (its targets?) hate them more with every new revelation? Like throwing your garbage over to your neighbors lawn every day and building higher and higher fences because you sense that they might be starting to hate you. Obama wake up already!
Smrchy··on Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit
The last time Obama held a public speech in Berlin he was cheered like he was Michael Jackson and the Pope in one person. This was before he was elected for his first term.

Back then there was no need to preselect his audience. Tens of thousands just came to celebrate him. It will be interesting to see how he is greeted by the German public this time. In Berlin. At the Branderburger Tor. Will he talk about freedom?

Smrchy··on Did Obama Just Destroy the U.S. Internet Industry?
I live i Germany. And whenever we try to sell cloud-based services to our customers there is this group of people that are not comfortable with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. They like to keep data in their own racks on their own servers. The standard reply is to call it FUD and talk about all the advantages the cloud has.

It will be a lot harder to win an argument against them now that everybody knows that data which is stored in the U.S. is free bait for the NSA to play with. It's no longer fear, uncertainty and doubt. It's just fear now.

Smrchy··on Nginx security advisory (CVE-2013-2028)
The official nginx ubuntu package has already been updated to 1.4.1
Smrchy··on Amazon S3 – 2 Trillion Objects, 1.1 Million Requests/Second
It would be really interesting to know the average size of an object and visualize the amount of harddisks it takes to store all this data.
Smrchy··on Show HN: Never wait for Paypal again
It is just so sad that Paypal themselves don't feel the need to update their 10 year old interface and make it fresh and snappy to use.

Oh well, all the best to your project. I'm sure i will give it a try the next time i try to find a 3 month old transaction.

Smrchy··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
As soon as i read that FB was buying Instagram i quit and deleted my Instagram account. It was too predictable that something like this will happen.

Mark Zuckerberg is in a horrible position. I bet he would love to just build a cool and useful product. Instead he is damned to roll out all these awful money making features. And quick. Not only for his investors but also for the staff that owns FB stock.

How smooth could FB move along if their investors trusted them like they trust Jeff Bezos and his very long-term view.

Smrchy··on Regexp-based RFC822 email address validation
For JS validation on the client i use this:

http://blog.tcs.de/javascript-near-perfect-email-validation-...

A lot shorter and has only 3 cases that would not be detected. Enough for 99.x% of all entered emails.

Smrchy··on Having fun with Redis Replication between Amazon and Rackspace
Wouldn't compression between redis and hiredis make sense as well?

How much load would compression put on a Redis instance that talks to n clients where each client sends/receives medium sized JSON docs. And how much would be gained in terms of faster responses from Redis.

Smrchy··on Natural Gas Fracking Industry May Be Paying Off Scientists
Considering those professors are Americans i have to wonder what relationship they have to their (home)country when they say fracking is harmless to groundwater.

Don't these people have children, grand children?

Is money really so important?

Smrchy··on FB nearly cut in half since IPO (22.28 current low)
Buy on bad news it says. Every time i see such a huge drop for the FB stock i think to myself: Should i buy now - i never did. And every time i see the next rock bottom i am glad i didn't.

I do believe though that FB has the potential for a lot more revenue just because they own the channel to their gazillion users. They just haven't figured out a good way, yet.

Smrchy··on Bitcoinica MtGox account compromised
This might explain the unusual rise of BTC vs. USD.

The thief might have just traded those dollars to bitcoins which makes them harder to trace.

Smrchy··on 3 Problems AWS Needs to Address
This only works standalone and not embedded in an AJAX application.

I only wish someone from the S3 team at Amazon would at least answer to this thread:

https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=34281&...

Hundreds of messages in this thread and no answer after 2 years and counting.
