I smoosh things. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

Smoosh··on Why the AI Renaissance Keeps Not Arriving
Thanks for that final BTW which sent me on a side quest to listen to a half dozen different versions and gave me a completely different outlook on what that song was about and what it was saying. Made it even more poignant.
Smoosh··on Google is finally killing uBlock Origin in Chrome for good

> they described these projects as a horror show. Yes, they allowed, some progress was made, and some of it was pretty cool, but he also left a long, fiery trail of chaos in his wake. Months later, some teams were still grinding through waves of cleanup work.

That has been my experience with supporting and maintaining many large systems, so this has long been the case even without AI.

I assume the use of AI allows the crappy, flawed systems to be developed faster and perhaps cheaper.

Smoosh··on The Antikythera Mechanism
I have to think that there were other similar things contemporaneous with this device as the skill and knowledge displayed in its design and execution would not come ex nihilo.

Sadly they seem to be lost to us.

Smoosh··on The FCC wants your ID before you get a phone number
And yet we still have a huge problem with spam calls and “nothing can be done about it”.
Smoosh··on The FCC wants your ID before you get a phone number
Personal anecdote from my wife yesterday. She doesn’t get many spam calls but has noticed that when a particular friend calls her, she gets a spam call later that day. I surmised that the friend has some spyware on their phone which is reporting “active” numbers.
Smoosh··on I want to live like Costco people
Why do you think musk was all about the small private tunnels for transportation but then he blabbed to the public and was forced to go quiet?

Smoosh··on I want to live like Costco people
As is that “off road adventure 4x4”, yet people still buy them.
Smoosh··on The Dunning-Kruger effect is probably just from bimodal skill distributions
We may or may not be experts on a particular topic but most of us are inexpert at estimating competence on that topic.

Smoosh··on US forces locate and evacuate downed airman in Iran

Smoosh··on US deploying nearly all stealthy long-range JASSM-ER cruise missiles to Iran war
I suspect that they are willing to wait a few more years until they have built up their own chip making capacity so that disrupting Formosa won’t strongly affect their own economy, while it will hinder other developed countries.
Smoosh··on Show HN: Made a little Artemis II tracker
Nice, thanks.
Smoosh··on U.S. is burning through Tomahawk cruise missile stockpile
“When I took over our military, we didn’t have ammunition,” Trump said Monday. “I was told by a top general – maybe the top of them all – ‘Sir, I’m sorry. Sir, we don’t have ammunition.’ I said, ‘I’ll never let another president have that happen to him or her.’ We didn’t have ammunition.”
Smoosh··on The Australian government has announced gambling advertising reforms
“provides critical funding to sport, racing and broadcast industries”

I foresee that the amped-up sports gambling will destroy professional sports as all results will be tainted with the probable interference from the gambling industry and those trying to “game the system” (irony noted).

Smoosh··on Senators want datacenters to come clean on power consumption
Remember when many people online were complaining that electric vehicles were bad because the grid wouldn’t be able to cope with the demand to charge them?

I suppose those people are now saying the same thing about datacenters, but I just haven’t seen them yet.

Smoosh··on AI-Powered F1 Predictions
Why would the team apply different strategies if it would not yield any extra points and would probably upset the lower finishing driver ?

The great thing about populist slogans like “drain the swamp” is that they don’t specify what exactly will be done and how, so they are highly malleable.
Smoosh··on Big tech stocks lose billions as AI spending fears hit valuations
Could the non-tech stocks be down because the productivity increases expected from AI are illusory? Or that when the bubble bursts the economy will be wrecked and all businesses will be affected?

Smoosh··on Switching off AI's ability to lie makes it more likely to claim it's conscious
That reply uses I/I’m around a dozen times, forcing the user into anthropomorphising the AI.
Smoosh··on Waymo halts service during S.F. blackout after causing traffic jams
I suspect that in a large scale disaster/emergency the communications systems may be disrupted and it may not be possible to remotely control the vehicles.

Perhaps in such cases they can pull over in a safe place, or if they have an occupant ask them if they wish to continue the journey or stop.

Perhaps they already do this, I have no experience with autonomous vehicles.

Smoosh··on CO2 batteries that store grid energy take off globally
Aren’t CATL already producing sodium-ion batteries for about 60% the cost of lithium-ion for equivalent capacity?
Smoosh··on What will enter the public domain in 2026?
Oh, no! Hollywood will get richer and the poor author will get nothing!
