SlavikCA··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
That's right: no legal basis exists now. The proposal is to create such legal basis.

And if "No large undertaking could ever function with such broad exposure to liability" - that would be great, i think we would prefer that such firms doesn't exists.

SlavikCA··on The Cloudflare Blog – Brought to You by EmDash
their website said:

> A spiritual WordPress successor

IMHO, one of main goal of WordPress is to be EASY to use, EASY to install... May be it's not secure, may be it's not fast, but it's EASY.

I tried EmDash few weeks ago. Can't make it work, can't install it. Their Dockerfile was broken. My issue is closed now. May be Dockerfile is ok now.

They don't publish container image in Docker Hub, in Github packages or anywhere.

Looks like EmDash is some internal Cloudflare project, but some executives ordered them to publish it on Github to be "open source". And if you can't use? Well, who cares?

SlavikCA··on The web server deployment model breaks at hobby scale
I have 5Gbps fiber at home. LAN is mostly 10Gbps.

I'm hosting few hobbyist public websites. One is the library of hymns, songs, ... - mostly PDF, MP3, MIDI.

OpnSense router -> Traefik -> Docker container.

That Docker container runs on NAS, which is connected via 1Gbps port.

Suddenly, last week I started to get over 1000 RPS. Was it scanner, parser, crawler, DDOS? I can't tell, as user agent was default Mac OS.

It was using ~1Gpbs bandwidth. From many IPs. If I would have it hosted at AWS / Azure, it would cost me > $40 / hour for the bandwidth. Unless I use some of their CDN.

My router CPU went high, but it handled it ok. NAS CPU went high, but it handled it ok. Traefik loaded the server heavily: it had to both receive and send 1Gbps. And write access logs for all requests. My Alloy & Loki logging system got loaded heavily.

NAS already have cache. I tried to enable cache on Traefik. It went OOM in 2 minutes: https://github.com/darkweak/souin/issues/844

When I searched, I found that Traefik cache with proper memory handling is available only in Enterprise version.

Solved the issue by putting the site behind Cloudflare proxy and enabling it's magic to protect from the bot.

SlavikCA··on Getting 25 Gbps Thunderbolt Ethernet on My Mac Studio
AI tells that for DPX 4k 60fps it's ~17Gbps
SlavikCA··on Getting 25 Gbps Thunderbolt Ethernet on My Mac Studio
What are typical use cases for needing 25Gbps?

Author talks about 4k video, but AI tells me that for "4K production mastering (ProRes 422 HQ, 4:2:2, 10-bit)" the rate is under 2Gbps.

I'm not saying it's not needed, - just curious.

SlavikCA··on Inkling-Small
About the same size as DeepSeek Flash 4, but also supports audio and image input:

- 276B parameters

- 12B active parameters

Looks like not yet available on Open Router: https://openrouter.ai/thinkingmachines/inkling-small

SlavikCA··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
from my brief search:

real-world OPNsense (yea, that's not Debian) benchmarks show that even low-power Xeon-D (Skylake-D SoC) with 10G SFP+ NICs:

pushed 9.40 Gbps in plain router mode

7 Gbps with packet filtering and no rules

7 Gbps in NAT mode

5.5 Gbps with a default ruleset

SlavikCA··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
The router probably should work without relying on LLM:

I remember I misconfigured it, and can't really Google around or ask LLM to fix it, because my Internet is down now.

Of course I can use Internet on my phone, but it's not really convenient setup to ask LLM to troubleshoot the router.

SlavikCA··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
About 2 years ago I tried to use Mikrotik, as the router for my ATT Fiber.

It's royal pain.

Basic router setup is not hard.

Port forward to expose web server? Can be done after heavy docs&forum reading, but hair pinning never worked for me.

I checked their WiFi AP. It's UI is hard even for senior software engineer.

In the end I got opnSense installed in VM on Proxmox and it's my router for last 2 years.

I'm using 2 Mikrotik switches with their simplified UI to operate VLANs. Zero complains.

There is no standard.

The higher quantization - the better results, but more memory is needed. Q8 is the best.

- brightness & contrast

SlavikCA··on MiniMax M2.1
The HuggingFace link is published, but not working yet: https://huggingface.co/MiniMaxAI/MiniMax-M2.1

Looks like this is 10 billion activated parameters / 230 billion in total.

So, this is biggest open model, which can be run on your own host / own hardware with somewhat decent speed. I'm getting 16 t/s on my Intel Xeon W5-3425 / DDR5-4800 / RTX4090D-48GB

And looking at the benchmark scores - it's not that far from SOTA (matches or exceeds the performance of Claude Sonnet 4.5)

SlavikCA··on Kubernetes Ingress Nginx is retiring
Reading few blogs and forums about it today - people talking about switching to Gateway API (from "legacy" Ingress).

And I do not understand it:

1. Ingress still works, it's not deprecated.

2. There a lot of controllers, which supports both: Gateway API and Ingress (for example Traefik)

So, how Ingress Nginx retiring related / affects switch to Gateway API?

SlavikCA··on Preventing Kubernetes from pulling the pause image from the internet
I tried Talos few month ago. Found it unstable and complicated; reported few bugs.

And because they are "immutable" - I found it's significantly more complicated to use with no tangible benefits. I do not want to learn and deal declarative machine configs, learn how to create custom images with GPU drivers...

Quite a few things which I get done on Ubuntu / Debian under 60 seconds - takes me half an hour to figure out with Talos.
