SjuulJanssen··on Goodbye Python, Hello Go
Some issues:

- I make stupid mistakes in Python constantly. I misname a variable or a function or I pass in the wrong arguments: Try mypy

- If the task is IO bound: Threads are the wrong the answer to that. You're going async by using Golang, why not in python?

- With Python, I have to ensure all the packages I need are installed on the remote machine: pipenv Like slezyr mentions

- Consistent Styling: Try autopep8 or black

- Intellisense: I would say "use Pycharm" but vscode is getting better I heard

Natural languages are not designed. Pun intended. Afaik languages are more or less cannonised after people have already started speaking the language. If there is a large enough group talking in a certain way who's to say it's wrong. Every word has at one time been made up. If for example enough people decide they don't care about "their" or "they're" then "their" it is (or "there")

SjuulJanssen··on Top Reasons I like Postgres Over SQL Server
SqlServer issues I've encountered or found on the interwebs:

* Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (the release version and service packs) and earlier versions of SQL Server are not supported on Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8. * SQL Server 2008 only runs on W2012 /Win8 from If you install R2. * Importing .bak files from SQL2005 to 2012 Express (Not sure about the full version) will not import. * Copying a database from SQL2005 to 2012Express in management studio will not work either. * SqlServer 2012 Will not run on Server 2003 * SQL Server 2012 requires a minimum of 6 GB of available hard-disk space. * SQL Server 2012 will not run on Server 2008, Vista, Win7 without a Service Pack

SjuulJanssen··on New Programming Jargon
I disagree, as long as there is knowledge to be gained it's helpful to all of us. If a community loves the questions why delete them? I especially like reading this kind of posts because seeing lots of different opinions as to what is better in what situation can help me make the right choice. And it has some entertaining value much like the "new programmer jargon thread" or this one http://stackoverflow.com/questions/58640/great-programming-q... which, of course, I can't see anymore. I myself like to read these quotes because they often contain simple and elegant truths.

You make the following points for why they shouldn't appear on SO

- Nobody needs to know the answer to this question. -> There will always be someone looking for the answer in question. Surely a lot of people would like to know it still. I googled "Git vs Mercurial" and it has 965.000 results. I suppose at least few people thought it was worth discussing.

- It’s not nearly specific enough. -> A or B. Seems specific enough to me. And the difference in the opinions and experience of the those who answer will bring a depth and specificity that can not be found on Wikipedia or a blog post. If all the answers in life were as easy as A or B, life would be a lot easier.

- It is difficult to learn from these questions. -> This is where I disagree the most with you. A person who hasn't used one of both will surely gain some insights why or why not to use A or B

- It drives away experts. -> I only see it attracting people as there are lots of votes. Of course that doesn't disproof your claim. But perhaps you can show us the numbers? Do you see a disproportionate larger amount of votes from people with less points?

What I think are good reasons are: - Perhaps you want the site to remain clean Q&A not Q&O(pinion) - You want to avoid opinion battles as they can get out of hand

As for the opinion battles. I can understand. But I still value the opinions. And whether an opinion is constructive should be measured by it's upvotes. But the clean just Q&A. As I said earlier. There isn't always a clean cut answer to a question. Life would be a lot easier if it was.

And to answer the Gorilla vs Shark question the answer is obvious. If you're on land the Gorilla will win. If you're in the water the Shark will win. And that's what you can learn from such a question. That's what someone is looking for if he's Googling for "Gorilla vs Shark"

SjuulJanssen··on I Won't Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar
Nice drama title. Of course the drama tanks when the reader finds out that it's for a job where people write for a living. That's like asking a programmer to do some coding in the interview. Which is, IMO, not weird at all and rather something everyone should consider.
SjuulJanssen··on Handsontable - Excel-like table editor in HTML & jQuery
This is what you're talking about. http://obeleh.thruhere.net/ Wait for it to load. It's connecting to the database ;)

NOTE Still in development ;)

What I've done is I wanted to have a Ms Access like application on the web. Everything "real time". As datagrid i use SlickGrid. Every change is being sent to a nodeJs webserver using NowJs. The change is then saved to a mongoDb database. When a change is saved all clients that are viewing that table get an update with the new data. On the right is my "meta" table. This table describes all columns that are in the database. The data in the meta table is only saved when you click save. But all the data in the left table is real time.

To see the real "power" of the application open two browsers and make sure you can see both. If you have two separate PC's this will also work. So now you have the same datagrid twice. Now when you do a change in one datagrid you will see that that change has been pushed to the other datagrid as well.

The datagrid has multi-column-sorting, selection, copy-paste and delete. I'm working now on having Comboboxes so that you can have a Cities table and a Persons table and you can select the right city for each person. The thing is, I need to keep my combobox options in sync with the database as well. And I want to store the ObjectID and not the CityName for example. Because names can change. ID's don't.

SjuulJanssen··on The love and hate of Node.js
This might answer your question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAc0vQCC6UQ

TLDR: He didn't want to use an ecosystem that had existing blocking code. He wanted node to be pure in te sence that nothing was blocking. Starting on a clean slate enabled him to get everything pure non-blocking from the ground up. He admits that Js isn't the best language. But his rationale for not using an existing ecosystem (when it comes to IO) is not bad.
