SirHackalot··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I like being able to use Procreate or other image editing software on my iPad, and the only reason I’d consider a foldable in the first place is because I’d like to use it like I use my iPad. What’s so bad about having the option to use a stylus? Who cares what a dead tech oligarch once thought of styluses? Especially when the state of the technology wasn’t where it’s at now. If you could ask Jobs now, maybe he would have changed his mind.
SirHackalot··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Rogue employees? There is a rogue CEO who data mined the entire U.S. population with his IT devshop called DOGE and you’re still talking about Tesla and data privacy? If this wasn’t HN I would use an expletive at this point. You can use your imagination, as I’m sure you know what you are. Get lost.
SirHackalot··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Sure, cringelord. You even talk like Elon. Maybe I found another Elon alt account.

Debunked by whom? The ministry of truth? Are we not supposed to do basic cause and effect inference? And which part has been debunked? The salute, or the austerity and deaths due to USAID cuts? The salute’s been debunked by the emperor’s groveling subjects who proclaim loudly that his garments are, indeed, astonishing! No surprise there, their retirement is at stake. Seriously, are you being paid to shill for Tesla? Nobody is this dumb.

SirHackalot··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Yeah, actual Nazis who commit administrative murder of a non-zero number of people in Africa who died from preventable diseases due to the DOGE USAID cuts. Some might call it administrative eugenics. I heard the guy who did that also threw a pretty obvious gesture that shows support for that ideology. I choose to believe my eyes and my functioning brain, thanks.
SirHackalot··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
Very cool idea, but I wanna be the one drawing. Why would I outsource the fun part to the AI? Classification is useful, but the paintings are the fun part…

Thanks for the laugh. Tesla recorded people having sex in their garage.
SirHackalot··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Are you being sarcastic? Hard to tell online. I don’t know the exact numbers, like I said. I know it’s non-zero because of simple logic. That’s all I need to know to form an opinion on the guy.
SirHackalot··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Congrats you free speech absolutist! You got my comment flagged, but the good thing is everybody with above room temperature IQ can infer what a [flagged] comment probably said based on context :)
SirHackalot··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Found the Musk Stan. It’s perfectly fine to be angry with a political trillionaire who did all of the aforementioned things. Keep being disappointed, that’s going to be your natural state when this dust settles.
SirHackalot··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
Interesting to find this comment, I’ve been dipping my toes into formal methods and was doing a RCoq tutorial yesterday (really basic stuff), and I also noticed that the proofs in RCoq have a more pen -and-paper proof feel to them.
SirHackalot··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
This comment almost made me quit my job and pursue my original passion in architecture. So the job was, all along, as fun as I imagined it… And the full-stack knowledge to make it happen is still rare? I am currently designing my house in Blender and was planning to import it into Unreal Engine to make it navigable. HN has a way of serving me the content I’m looking for at the right time…

Harrumph

I haven’t been on Reddit in ages, if that helps :)

SirHackalot··on Trump's diversity crackdown reverberates through US boardrooms
I fully support Biden administration’s stance on [2], you have to take positive discrimination case-by-case (because sometimes it’s bad). Quotas are bad. I’ve certainly been on your side before — arguing about the negatives in the way DEI has been administered. What I will tell you is that the answer isn’t whatever this is, and this is certainly a “crackdown.”
SirHackalot··on Iran Has Figured Out How to Overwhelm U.S. Air Defenses
Also, it turned out Ukraine had a lot of cards. This administration is such an embarrassment.
SirHackalot··on Kimi Linear: An Expressive, Efficient Attention Architecture (2025)
Yep, that second part of my comment was an article I read about OpenAI and my mind mixed it up with Anthropic. My mistake.
SirHackalot··on Kimi Linear: An Expressive, Efficient Attention Architecture (2025)
Wow, I should never comment first thing in the morning... Thanks for the correction, you’re right. I will see if I can still edit my comment.
SirHackalot··on Kimi Linear: An Expressive, Efficient Attention Architecture (2025)
Didn't Anthropic train on our collective data just to sell it back to us for $100/month? On top of that, Apple is suing them over alleged IP and trade secret theft by ex-Apple employees. Hard to feel too sympathetic, and I’m not an Anthropic hater in particular…
SirHackalot··on AI companies spend record sums on Washington lobbying
It was always the era of lobbying, now you just shower the gold-obsessed king with tribute — crypto, ballroom funds, a private jet — in order to buy a presidential decree. Just lay gold and silver at the feet of the monarch and wait for your royal pardon or policy favor.
SirHackalot··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
It outperformed the west in some things, notably not computing (which sealed its fate). I agree though. But I think there’s also something to be said about the way in which the experiment ended. Compared to the bloody, violent disintegration of most historical superpowers, the dissolution of the USSR was a remarkably swift, self-inflicted, and low-violence event.
SirHackalot··on The new rules of context engineering for Claude 5 generation models
> becoming disillusioned

> becoming?

It's all arcane, superstitious nonsense. Nobody actually knows how to work with these models is right. We've replaced software engineering with prompt astrology and Al whispering. The peak comedy of it all is watching people like Karpathy publish "skills" that read like psychoanalysis, just offering basic verbal instructions with a completely straight face...

SirHackalot··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Throw the USSR in there as well. Central planning allowed them to leap from an agrarian society to launching Sputnik and putting the first human in space, which spooked us into kickstarting the space race. It wasn’t market incentives that did that.
SirHackalot··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Take a breath, you’re having a total knee-jerk reaction. What statistic?

So out of thousands of years of human history, we somehow stumbled onto the absolute final, perfect economic system 250 years ago with zero room for upgrade? Makes total sense /s. I’m sure there were those who said feudalism/mercantilism were the most efficient systems ever and we don’t need capitalism. Even Marx was a fan of capitalism, he viewed it as a revolutionary stepping stone towards a more efficient system and praised it for lifting feudal subjects out of poverty, and the massive productivity gains it produced. That’s not what’s being argued here.

> "The bourgeoisie, during its rule of scarce one hundred years, has created more massive and more colossal productive forces than have all preceding generations together."

SirHackalot··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Does that mean capitalism is not an efficient system to meet the needs of well-informed consumers? Why am I being lumped in with an 8 year old who asks their parents to buy them an online game? There should be a market for physical media and devices with physical buttons if people exist who want them. These companies won’t work on anything that doesn’t bring them a gazillion dollars, so billion/million dollar ventures never get off the ground.
SirHackalot··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
I don’t see why anyone should be obligated to direct traffic to Twitter. Let the author post on his own blog or digital garden. I don’t want to go on Twitter. Echoing the same as others, it’s good to bring any content from Twitter into the open web.
SirHackalot··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Never seen capitalists this afraid of competition. Same story with Chinese cars… We can’t have cheap, and objectively superior EVs because of protectionist policies towards Musk and his ilk.
SirHackalot··on Are AI labs pelicanmaxxing?
I used it to generate some icons for my app recently, I found it a pleasantly useful feature already in its current state. Before this I would’ve had to close the code editor, open something like Illustrator, use something like a tablet (or struggle with the mouse and keyboard), and export the result. For something like a generic icon for a button, or a simple geometric figure, this always felt too tedious. On the other hand, my apps looked visually impressive before the AI and people valued my artistic ability more. So there’s that… Not every software engineer also had an eye for design. With AI generation, they can bridge that gap.
