Stories like this are why I do not donate to charities at all.

It is just too hard to verify that my money isn't going to pad some dictator's pocket.

Simple_Guy··on The Guardians of the French Language Are Deadlocked
I can imagine a bunch of old people sitting in a room complaining about all the new words the young kids are using and how they are destroying the language.

One of the coolest things to do is go on one of the many multiplayer servers and see some of the super train systems that have been built. 16 lanes high speed rail connecting thousands of nodes.

that doesn't seem surprising tbh. given the 80/20 rule (or whatever statistical distribution governs this case).

Or you can just do the minimum just like the manager and cruise on the ship until it sinks while surveying for another ship to jump on at the first opportunity.
Simple_Guy··on F-35: What The Pilots Say
But F35 has a different role from the F22. How can it be 'as good'? By what metrics would you compare them?

What is the problem? If they are valuable, they can surely get another job. if they are not, why should IBM keep them around?
Simple_Guy··on How did we discard the idea of college faculty?
Why does this article pretend that we collectively made a decision to punish professors and not that the effect of supply and demand in a free market is the cause?

Yes. In a perfect society, one would be free to invite whomever one wants to one's walled garden party without fear that a mob would form to lynch you because your walled garden party does not have a trans-species potatokin.
Simple_Guy··on Name It, and They Will Come
I think it's called bikeshedding.
Simple_Guy··on Name It, and They Will Come
One man's noise is another man's signal.

The reason the internet has more noise than signal is because there are many people, and they don' all want to talk about the same thing as you.

Simple_Guy··on Why we think giant pterosaurs could fly (2018)
Reading through this, it reminds me of pointless arguing of whether superman can beat goku. There's a lot of logic and maths, from both sides, yet in the end it would be impossible to know the answer.

yes. when there is a competition for limited resources, the poorer you are the less likely you will have access to the resources. That's how it works.

No matter what you do you could never change this. You will simply create an alternative (and/or parallel) system with its own poors.

Imagine you started a really cool walled garden, invited everybody over, and they all enjoy it. Then you kick out a few trolls, and one of them thinks that the government should come in and forcibly allow the trolls back in.

It's my garden, my choice. You are still allowed to publish your app on the web.

to some, soccer and american football are just silliness. and yet these are multi-billion buckos industries.

It can be used to influence elections, to shape public opinion, to market products etc. Billions are at stake. It's real. It's not silliness.

The point is you try to find the opportunities that pay more than $5/hr.

Poker for example, is quite fun, more profitable and more social too. The strategy is deep but not yet perfected, so you are constantly learning. fun.

The house is not getting wiped out. Their bank is too large to be wiped out by a slot machine. They are only threatened with high rollers playing 10M a hand baccarat. $10 slot variance will never harm a casino.
