Silverback_VII··on It's not only you, there's an explosion of ChatGPT on HN
GPT can tell you what's wrong with Bitcoin:

You throw 25 grand on a Bitcoin bet, The dough lands in a chest, smoky and wet. You've got your Bitcoin, feelin' alive, But the chest has plans, man, it's a damn beehive.

It pays the skeptics, those withdrawing in fright,

The electric bill's covered, in the dark of the night,

A Lambo, a threesome, a few folks living in sin, As the value hits 27 grand, you think it's your turn to win.

But then comes a big fish, an old-time player, He dumps his coins, like a dirty betrayer.

The price dives to 20 grand, you can't help but feel, Thousands like you are stuck in a rotten ordeal.

You scramble to withdraw, but the site's a damn mess,

The price keeps on fallin', and the chest reveals its emptiness.

The truth is, it was never full, not even close, Now you're left with your Bitcoin, feelin' morose.

A voice in the shadows tells you, "It's not about the bread, Bitcoin's a different way to pay, don't let it go to your head. Hold tight, and embrace your virtual piece, The future of money might just find its release."

Silverback_VII··on LAION, a high school teacher’s free image database, powers AI unicorns
> No, their reasoning is that they only keep a link to the image so there’s nothing to remove.

I'm well aware of it, and that's also what I wanted to say. However, as I mentioned, the dataset with the links (to copyrighted material) is provided for machine learning purposes. Saying "We only provide links" is a lazy excuse from a guy with a smirking face.

Silverback_VII··on LAION, a high school teacher’s free image database, powers AI unicorns
We all know the purpose for which the images linked in the dataset will be used. "We are a non-profit organization and provide only a link" is akin to taking people for fools. Why can't these systems be trained exclusively on images for which people have given consent or for which money has been paid?
Silverback_VII··on LAION, a high school teacher’s free image database, powers AI unicorns
You can read here(in german): https://www.alltageinesfotoproduzenten.de/2023/02/20/laion-v...

that the non-profit LAION is going as far as intimidating the creators of the images they used.

They don't publish the image, yes, and that is also their reasoning. However, in my opinion, the intention behind all of this seems obvious. They circumvent copyright claims by being a non-profit and not publishing, but with the clear intent that the image will be used to train some system further down the road. LAION appears to be a key player in how these text-to-image models dodge the copyright bullet.

Silverback_VII··on LAION, a high school teacher’s free image database, powers AI unicorns
Yet, what LAION is doing appears to be somewhat obvious. We are a non-profit and not publishing the images seems like hiding behind technicalities.
Silverback_VII··on LAION, a high school teacher’s free image database, powers AI unicorns
After reading it, it seems that LAION is merely doing the dirty work (going as far as intimidating the creators of the materials they use) so that other companies can utilize copyrighted material without taking too much risk. Not sure if this teacher is a hero...
Silverback_VII··on Deming Paradox: Operationally rigorous companies aren't nice places to work
The default human brain certainly thinks as you do, otherwise, people would exhibit the same or greater work ethic when it comes to their own stuff. However, I genuinely wonder if this is true.

The saying "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" seems reasonable at first glance, but it could also be something someone tells you to prevent you from seeking a better place beyond his influence.

Silverback_VII··on Apple wins antitrust court battle with Epic Games, appeals court rules
> Apple users are happy to pay a premium to be able to carry around a device with an Apple logo on it for everyone around them to see.

One thing Apple has done masterfully is exploiting the status circuit in the human brain. Apple users often claim they pay more because the product is superior in some or many ways, or even argue that it is, in fact, cheaper when considering everything. However, in reality, they pay more because they can. They want to display their Apple products and they want others to see them.

Silverback_VII··on Ask HN: How do you generate ideas?
I once came across a study that suggested the possibility of training synesthesia and its potential to improve problem-solving. I then created a system in which each number and letter (from 0-26 and .,a,b,c...z) is associated with a color, an object, a scene, an animal, a shape, a position on 3x3x3 cube, a body part, etc. and I trained with it.

For example:

0, ".", grey, stone, mountain landscape, wolf, irregular shape, beard

1, "a", red, fire, burning forest, bull, square, penis

2, "b", blue, water, ocean, whale, circle, breast

Now, I visualize a blue water cell working and growing when I do bench presses.

Looking back, it might seem somewhat autistic, but it makes my daily life (especially mundane tasks) more interesting, as sometimes images randomly pop up. I believe such a system might greatly enhance the ability to generate new ideas.

Silverback_VII··on Ask HN: Are You a Failure?
>I wonder if the next best moment to do so is now.

Your post seems like a sophisticated advertisement, and it probably is.

Silverback_VII··on Deming Paradox: Operationally rigorous companies aren't nice places to work
When I read this, I ask myself, why don't people usually work as hard for themselves as they do for these exploitative systems? Large companies may be like giant insects sucking out your life energy. However, I've noticed that people often manage to get up in the morning for these 'insects' but struggle to do so when it's about themselves.
Silverback_VII··on AI powered realtime fluid simulations are here
I mean Maya from Indian philosophy, which states that we live in an illusion that makes it difficult for us to recognize the true essence of the world and things.
Silverback_VII··on Do judges give out tougher sentences when hungry? A study too good to be true
Another perspective would be that when your body switches to survival mode due to adverse circumstances (such as cold or hunger), it mobilizes all its physical and cognitive resources. When the body is fighting for survival, it's about everything. This is probably the reason why many people report that they are capable of peak performance in this state. The body usually doesn't give more when it has more, but does the opposite. It saves and conserves its resources for worse times.
Silverback_VII··on Do judges give out tougher sentences when hungry? A study too good to be true
Correcting science with even worse science seems to be fashionable these days. Science at work.
Silverback_VII··on AI powered realtime fluid simulations are here
A fully AI-generated simulation doesn't seem to be very far off. However, there is the concept of Maya (and with some changes, the simulation hypothesis or the ideas of Donald Hoffman) that may already be true.
Silverback_VII··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
It's like Monopoly, at some point there is just nothing you can do. The resets are probably the collapses of civilizations.
Silverback_VII··on UBS got Credit Suisse for almost nothing
The Germans are losing their industry because someone blew up a pipeline. who knows, maybe it has something to do with that?
Silverback_VII··on UBS got Credit Suisse for almost nothing
>I do have the feeling everyone here more or less agrees this was the only option.

It was certainly not the only option. The Swiss seem to bury everything that was once important to them. They are not truly neutral anymore, and now they have let one of their oldest banks fail. The image of Switzerland as being a place of stability and smart decisions takes a big hit.

Silverback_VII··on UBS got Credit Suisse for almost nothing
>Another random thought: If even the Swiss can't keep it together financially we're in real trouble.

The Swiss government(and the SNB) could have easily saved Credit Suisse, but the politicians lacked the backbone to do so. They panicked at the first sign of trouble. Saving the bank was important for Switzerland’s image in the financial world, but it seems that they no longer care about their own country.

By letting a 167-year-old bank fail instead of simply buying it for 16 billion, they lost a lot of trust.

Silverback_VII··on Could UFOs be alien probes? A new 2023 Harvard study explores it [pdf]
What’s up with these UFO stories popping up everywhere? Apparently, some of them were shot down. Are there any reports about what they found at the crash site?
Silverback_VII··on ChatGPT is rendering other people's chat history in the sidebar

Silverback_VII··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts

Silverback_VII··on Sucralose is a negative modulator of T cell-mediated responses in mice
99.9% of people who claim that 'mouse studies dare useless' are from Reddit and not from the forefront of science. As a result of this reasoning, they may never experience the 300% testosterone boost of onion juice.
Silverback_VII··on Ask HN: I was fired and I'm pissed off, how to avoid burning bridges?
Everybody who has done such work knows that it is impossible to simply leave your heart and soul at home.
Silverback_VII··on Ask HN: I was fired and I'm pissed off, how to avoid burning bridges?
Burn the bridges, learn from it, and move on. Some people may say that it's always better to keep the doors open, but let's be honest, does it really matter what they think of you? What matters is what you think of yourself. They misled you, fired you, and now you're here wondering if it's appropriate to block them. They don't care about you, and neither should you care about them. The world is big enough.
Silverback_VII··on Ask HN: Any solo game developers here?
>At the same time, it looks like this group is very picky about who can join.

He is using a psychological trick to make people feel insecure and inadequate, and thus create an imbalance of power within the group. However, his requirements may backfire because being a full-time solo game developer may only be possible if you have someone supporting you, or if you live in your mom’s basement or on social security. It excludes people who are serious about their endeavors but still have to pay the bills.

Silverback_VII··on Bacteria hijack a meningeal neuroimmune axis to facilitate brain invasion
When it comes to viruses, I think it is important to understand that they simply replicate because they can. The virus has no interest in keeping you alive or killing you; it just infects cells and that’s it.
