SiempreViernes··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
Oh right, how rude of me to only talk about mathematicians in this thread about the future prospects of children in Sudan. Of course this is the place to make "what about the illustrators" argument.
SiempreViernes··on Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt in Rust and released it as OSS
It's funny to talk about the "original source" of a copyright washing project.
SiempreViernes··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
Sure, and sometimes gates are needed. That's why we all run spamfilters, those are definitely gatekeepers.

In this instance however, it's openAI and Anthropic that are pushing people out of the field by running secret models that take the interesting work away and leaves the persons having to review endless slop proofs.

SiempreViernes··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
No, you dislike maths to the point you prefer paying others to do it. Actual mathematicians are largely doing it for fun, but are now effectively saying "stop destroying our fun or we'll stop doing maths", and you will have to do the maths yourself.
SiempreViernes··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
The most immediate answer is because the models are proprietary and only available to those who want to hype the big labs.
SiempreViernes··on What Meta got right with Muse
if you ask the model gently it'll give you root on the VM it runs in and you can install a bitcoin miner.
SiempreViernes··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
> But on the other hand; yes, it would also help enormously if people ate less meat.

At first you had me, but then I realised it's not true if the price is building more data centres! That was just a trick to make the climate worse! Grr /s

SiempreViernes··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
If you can't bother to write it why would anyone bother to read it?
SiempreViernes··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
> But do you agree that Israel has a right to exist?

I've started to think this worry about a particular nation's right to exist is really a great rhetorical trick: nobody is particularly upset the nation of east Germany ceased to exist, and you don't hear Erdogan opposing Kurdish independence with "Doesn't the Turkie have a right to exist?"

There is a basic human right of self determination, but if you think what follows is that you should get your own nation then look at how the soviet policies of providing exactly that worked out. They even created a the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the far east!

SiempreViernes··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
It's not even evacuation because the IDF does not provide facilities to go to, it's just forced displacement.
SiempreViernes··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
While Hamas does have a right of armed struggle against the occupation, the taking of hostages and the killing of civilians are not permissible forms of resistance.

That said, it is almost impossible to imagine that the Israeli response would have been something lesser than the current genocide attempt if Hamas had just taken POWs during the October 7 attack. Bibi would have arguably been even more humiliated if Hamas had been acting with restraint, so the impulse for revenge would be even greater.

SiempreViernes··on OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says
The word "found" is different from the word "feel"; I'm not sure why you involved feelings at all: Bluetouff was sentenced because he admitted he had seen evidence the documents were supposed to be restricted but chose to publish parts of them anyway.

If you go into someones garden an copy their work, it does make a big difference if you admit to seeing the sign saying "private property, keep out".

SiempreViernes··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Really struggling to tell if this is meant as satire or not.
SiempreViernes··on The Millennium Problems for Biology
I think it illustrates that there are cool things to find beneath the lamp post of math and coding.
SiempreViernes··on How SpaceX streamlined the Raptor engine
Ok, so which is the worst product SpaceX has made? And I don't think the CSAM producing twitter account counts in this context.
SiempreViernes··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
Cool, are any of these particularly stable? Like, is there any choreography that could plausibly survive in practice?
SiempreViernes··on Alan's Random Insult Generator (1999)
Amazing, 100% real human complaint according to a state of the art* AI detection method!

*: Ranked 2 on the google proxy I used, as the best SEO optimister just refused to return a result at all.

SiempreViernes··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
> They did not do it for the money obviously, but for the PR

Doing it for the PR is still just doing it for the money, only they have a much bigger pile in mind.

SiempreViernes··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
It aims at peace yes, but importantly it is an inter-national organisation, meaning it lives beside nations and doesn't have any formal power over them. In some cases the individual treaties negotiated at the UN result in the UN having some formal influence over member nations, but even then the concrete commitments are usually very limited. For examy the Paris agreement basically just says you have to make a few reports, with peer pressure being most of the enforcement.

In contrast the EU is (partially) a supernational organisation: in some fields the EU holds formal power over what happens in the member nations (because the member nations changed their national law to give EU that power).

SiempreViernes··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
No, the resolution doesn't include a map, it's purely about which projection to use so obviously it doesn't mention any land borders.

As best I can tell the Ukrainian ambassador saw the example map made by the Equal Earth creator in 2014 with its somewhat questionable choice in colouring Crimea and saw an opportunity for virtue signalling. Or maybe he really thought the vote was about that specific political map from 2014.

SiempreViernes··on Real photos of young girls were in nudify-app ads on Facebook, Instagram
> The young royal’s image was “animated into a video of her performing a graphic sex act,” TTP found. Other ads animated a photo of a 14-year-old Instagram influencer “showing off her new sports club uniform” into “a video of her performing oral sex.” A third “preteen” victim “posing in a pink athletic outfit with pigtails” in a series of stock photos was morphed into a video where she looks frightened as she’s molested by an adult male, TTP reported.
SiempreViernes··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Here you go: https://archive.ph/9erfx bask in that 20% support of "more good than bad when it comes to news" and the 70% thinking it's destroying jobs.

There's also this, quite related one, showing that the BigAI CEOs are very disliked by below 34's https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/young-people-ai...

SiempreViernes··on Forgotten History of Small Nuclear Reactors (2015)
> Units 3 and 4 of the Novovoronezh NPP

So "small" here means a 150 meter long building.

SiempreViernes··on NASA: Fill in a name, and you can have an exclusive coordinate in the universe
With much charity I can imagine you meant: "but what if Roman points at the same bit twice and they assign the same patch of sky to different people?". Well, in that case they probably messed up because to me it seems clear they intend to assign each patch of sky to a distinct identity.

However, as written it sounds like you are essentially objecting that an address along Central Park (in New York city) is "not exclusive" because there are other "Central Park"s in the USA.

SiempreViernes··on NASA: Fill in a name, and you can have an exclusive coordinate in the universe
It's a coordinate on the celestial sphere, which is just as good a coordinate as anything else. Now, if the title had said something like "place" you might have a case that the expectation is that a specific spacetime point is being defined.
SiempreViernes··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
I find the gunplay in Minecraft very limited, so I'm surprised that is how you got into Counterstrike ;)
SiempreViernes··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
The US has murdered around 220 people at sea over the last year for the act of travelling like they are "narco terrorists".
SiempreViernes··on Zohran and the Short Link
You literally only said you made a link shortener, and even now give no indication you understand what aspects of the Mamdani communication strategy are being praised.
SiempreViernes··on Anthropic Sees over $30T in Potential Revenue
It's just 25 % of world GDP bro, and only slightly more than double the projected worldwide construction market in 2028.
SiempreViernes··on Show HN: A puzzle I couldn't solve for a year – cubers cracked it in an hour
Very strange choice to present the player with a solved puzzle and no "scramble" button...
