SheinhardtWigCo··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
The same is true of Google, no?
SheinhardtWigCo··on OpenAI Reinforcement Fine-Tuning Research Program
Even just the submissions to this application form will be highly insightful.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Just Eat Is Selling Grubhub to Marc Lore's Wonder for $650M
The markup’s not too bad and the delivery charges are substantially lowered by signing up for a membership, which is around $10/mo (or free with higher end credit cards)
SheinhardtWigCo··on Ask HN: How would you launch a privacy-first, Instagram-like social network?
I worked on something very similar: a privacy-first Instagram clone built on top of Matrix. We had a prototype and some initial users.

Here's the unfortunate truth:

The challenge of overcoming the network effect is _the_ problem you're solving here. Nothing else really matters. Almost nobody will care that it's privacy-first. Asking HN to help you figure this out indicates to me that you should do something else.

SheinhardtWigCo··on Private Cloud Compute Security Guide
It was always "trust us". They make the silicon, and you have no hope of meaningfully reverse engineering it. Plus, iOS and macOS have silent software update mechanisms, and no update transparency.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Federal investigators probe Tether
It really is just a bank without any of the regulatory safeguards. A disastrous outcome is inevitable.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Security research on Private Cloud Compute
How is that relevant to Private Cloud Compute, though?
SheinhardtWigCo··on Security research on Private Cloud Compute
> Concrete example

This has not been corroborated and Bloomberg has not produced any supporting evidence.

SheinhardtWigCo··on Security research on Private Cloud Compute
Yeah, but, considering the sheer complexity of modern CPUs and SoCs, this is still the case even if you have the silicon in front of you. That ship sailed some time ago.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Why is Apple so bad at marketing its TV shows?
Apple TV+ generates less viewing in one month than Netflix does in one day.

SheinhardtWigCo··on Expanding Our Code of Conduct to Protect Private Conversations
This is just sad at this point.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Virtualizing iOS on Apple Silicon
macOS when the keyboard is attached, and iOS when it is not, with instantaneous switching.

One can dream… but really, this is not all that far-fetched

SheinhardtWigCo··on Bricked iPhone 16 Can Be Restored Wirelessly Using Another iPhone
This is presumably in preparation for removing USB-C next year?
SheinhardtWigCo··on How one ED mobilized his department during a mass casualty incident (2017)
> For years I had been planning how I would handle a MCI, but I rarely shared it because people might think I was crazy.

This is such a huge problem.

SheinhardtWigCo··on Coinbase awarded a $500k bug bounty
You should be far more concerned about the ones that have given $0.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Self-driving Waymos secure final clearance for expansion beyond S.F
They kinda did that - they were operating in the suburbs around Phoenix AZ for years before launching in SF.

Not operating in difficult areas would slow them down because progress in this domain is bound by the breadth of edge cases encountered in the wild.

SheinhardtWigCo··on Microsoft will switch off Recall by default after security backlash
Apple plays “catch up” by quietly hunkering down for a few years and then suddenly leapfrogging everyone else.
SheinhardtWigCo··on macOS Bartender Auto-Update Signed by Unknown New Owner
There is, kind of. Each developer is identified by a “team ID”, which appears in the Common Name of these certificates. Apple does some validation of the developer’s legal entity, similar to EV SSL.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
No because Apple still has to “notarize” the app before it can be sideloaded
SheinhardtWigCo··on State Farm announces major change affecting tens of thousands households in CA

SheinhardtWigCo··on Rabbit R1 source code [part 1]
"Quick" as in being quick to exploit LLM hype.

"Cash grab" as in Elizabeth Holmes grabbing $700m from Theranos investors.

SheinhardtWigCo··on Rabbit R1 source code [part 1]
Their "keynote" just screams shenanigans. It's the most blatantly fake product demo I have ever seen.

To take one example, at 14m30s, the CEO is shown using the device to book a trip to London. This is presented as a live demo, but it's clearly simulated.

I appreciated your detailed update!
SheinhardtWigCo··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
More cooks does not a delicious meal make.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
It’s been scaled down and then back up, never fully shut down.
SheinhardtWigCo··on iMessage with PQ3 Cryptographic Protocol
> Last I heard we were 1 or 2 orders of magnitude away from physical noise performance that would make such a threat possible.

The entities with the most to gain from such an advancement are not exactly known for publicizing their achievements.

SheinhardtWigCo··on OpenAI boss Sam Altman wants $7T. For all our sakes, pray he doesn't get it
WSJ got it from an anonymous source. Could just be an attempt to anchor the valuation of OpenAI.
SheinhardtWigCo··on Memory and new controls for ChatGPT
Even though that instruction is somewhat specific, I would not be surprised if it results in a significant generalized performance regression, because among the training corpus (primarily books and webpages), text fragments that relate to not being thorough and disregarding instructions are generally going to be followed by weaker material - especially when no clear reason is given.

I’d love to see a study on the general performance of GPT-4 with and without these types of instructions.

SheinhardtWigCo··on More on the Apple Vision Pro
The reviews make it clear that this product has only one compelling use case: watching TV (alone). They should have marketed it as Apple TV Pro or something.

Clear your calendar and give Factorio a try.
