ShaneCurran··on The most important cryptography papers
Thank you! We'll create some nice cover illustrations and add these to the list
ShaneCurran··on A Mathematical Theory of Communication [pdf]
Not many know about it, but this paper (written in 1948) stemmed from a lesser-known paper Shannon wrote in 1945 called "A Mathematical Theory of Cryptography"[0].

[0]: https://evervault.com/papers/shannon

ShaneCurran··on The most important cryptography papers
We should definitely include Josh. Any suggestions specifically on which paper of his would be most useful to include?
ShaneCurran··on The most important cryptography papers
That's true! To be honest the papers start at the _beginning_ of (modern) cryptography, and the site doesn't factor in some of the more modern research in crypto. We haven't refreshed it in a couple of years, but should include some of the new FHE and PQC standardized schemes etc.

Any thoughts on what we should add/remove?

ShaneCurran··on The most important cryptography papers
I commented on this on another thread, but in all honesty it was intentionally skewed towards more "popular" papers as a quick reference guide. A lot of the people that use this resource are university students or cryptography first-timers, and undergrad university curricula do tend to focus more on the "famous" papers rather than the most novel/important.

That being said, if you have suggestions for papers to include we'd be happy to add them!

ShaneCurran··on The most important cryptography papers
Good suggestion! We (unfortunately) don't have an official webmaster at the company, but will try and surface this data on the page :)
ShaneCurran··on The most important cryptography papers
Founder of Evervault here — we created the page more as a simple reference to the most common papers that people are looking for when they're learning cryptography from scratch (with a mathematical background). As a result, frankly it skews more towards the "most famous" papers rather than the most important. If you have suggestions for papers you think we should include, we'd be happy to add them!
ShaneCurran··on Online Cryptography Course (2017)
If anybody's interested in any of the algorithms and papers that underpin most modern cryptography, we created a dedicated page on our site[0] as an homage to the great cryptographers of the last century(!) (and their works).

ShaneCurran··on Show HN: Redact PII for OpenAI with a simple proxy
Hi all!

Founder of Evervault[0] here.

We're excited to launch our AI Privacy use case today, making it easy for developers to easily redact PII in unstructured data (like prompts) using a simple proxy.

This means you can collect data from your users and have it redacted at the edge before it touches your infrastructure, or redact it before sending it to third-party LLM providers like OpenAI — solving a lot of the compliance and privacy pains facing developers today.

I wrote more about our proxy approach on the Evervault Blog[1].

Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

ShaneCurran··on Tokenized Tokens
Shameless plug, but we have a product at Evervault[0] called Outbound Relay[1] that’s basically a hosted, managed version of this flow. Secrets can be encrypted anywhere you collect them (either from third-party APIs or directly from the user in their browser) and then used any time you send a request to a downstream API provider.

ShaneCurran··on How to slow down scientific progress, according to Leo Szilard
Reminds me of this 1944 field manual from the CIA[0] about how to sabotage organizations.

ShaneCurran··on Launch HN: Vital (YC W20) – API for wearables and labs
Very cool, have always wondered when there’d be a “Plaid for healthcare data”. Looking forward to playing around with the product.

Also, great to see you’re encrypting sensitive data with Evervault!

[Disclosure: founder of Evervault here]

ShaneCurran··on Evervault
Yes! We have and will enter into BAAs under HIPAA for healthcare use cases, and are independently audited for HIPAA controls
ShaneCurran··on Evervault
Yes! We have a page coming soon, but Evervault is a QSA-audited service provider and we can reduce your PCI compliance scope to the simplest form (SAQ-A)

Evervault (https://evervault.com/jobs) | Engineers, Designers, Interns | Dublin, Ireland or San Francisco, CA | ONSITE

By building the encryption engine for the web, we’re enabling developers to make the next generation of products as secure as possible, and to build in areas that have previously been too sensitive to build in.

We’re a team of seven, based primarily in Dublin, Ireland. We get things finished and obsess over minute details. We think rigorously and tinker quickly. We do the most challenging things first. We build, and don’t just talk about building. We’re generalists, and are not afraid of exploring unfamiliar domains. We keep things as simple as possible, but no simpler.

You may be a fit for Evervault if:

  * You want to build durable infrastructure from ground zero.
  * You can decide what to work on, and can teach yourself whatever you need to get things done.
  * You understand that building something important means working long, hard, and smart — not two out of the three.
The things we spend most of our time on are:

  * Applied Cryptography (fully-homomorphic encryption [1], post-quantum cryptography [2], trusted execution environments [3])
  * Infrastructure (designing ultra-low latency systems backed by TEEs)
  * Applications (we know that developers will never want slower implementation, so we invest tremendous energy into carefully crafting our interfaces & flows)
Our investors include Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures, Jeff Weiner (former CEO, LinkedIn), Dylan Field (CEO, Figma), Olivier Pomel (CEO, Datadog), and Alex Stamos (former CSO, Facebook).

We also offer paid internships year-round, and invite interns who impress us to join full-time.

You can reach me directly at shane@evervault.com.

ShaneCurran··on Claude Shannon: Tinkerer, Prankster, and Father of Information Theory (2016)
Many know Shannon as the author of "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" and the founder of information theory, as well as the brain behind "Communication Theory of Secrecy Systems"

Both papers derive from a technical report, "A Mathematical Theory of Cryptography"[0], written by Shannon in 1945 — 3 years before his breakthrough papers in the Bell Labs Technical Journal.

ShaneCurran··on Claude Shannon: The Mathematical Theory of Cryptography
Hey Cliff! We haven't met, but I'm the proud owner of a Klein Bottle (and a couple "Portraits of Gauss"!) :-)

Thanks for reading! Some of these great innovators will be making an appearance in Evervault Papers in the near future. Stay tuned!

ShaneCurran··on Claude Shannon: The Mathematical Theory of Cryptography
Sure! We build tooling that lets developers encrypt data before it hits their infrastructure (Relay) and which lets them process that encrypted data at a later date (Cages).

We manage keys, but we don't store data.

All crypto operations and encrypted data processing happens inside TEEs (AWS Nitro Enclaves, specifically [0]). Using Relay, you can pass data on to trusted third parties over TLS. With Cages, you can deploy custom code inside a TEE which can process data in whichever way you need.

For developers who don't want plaintext data on our infrastructure, we also provide SDKs which let them encrypt data using our PKI scheme — on their own infrastructure.

ShaneCurran··on Claude Shannon: The Mathematical Theory of Cryptography
Hi all, founder of Evervault here — we're building encryption infrastructure for developers.

Cryptography is at the core of what we do. Evervault Papers is our way of continuing the legacy of cryptography giants like Shannon.

We're posting one new paper on evervault.com/papers each week and this is our first issue. Subscribe to get a cryptography paper in your inbox every Thursday!
