Shalomboy··on .NET Myths Dispelled
> The .NET frameworks (blazor, etc) are too complicated. Peak FizzBuzzEnterpriseEdition there.

I dunno, Blazor feels like the one ASP framework that makes sense. MVC, Web Apps, Web Forms all feel impenetrable to me.

You're braver than I'll ever be. I'm wishing you and your family peace and safety.

Have you thought about what will be left of your home and your family's belongings when you return to Kyiv? Have you thought about what returning to Kyiv will be like? The closest approximation to what you're going through in my life is tornadoes: the eerie siren out of nowhere, taking everybody close to you to shelter, calling loved ones to make sure they're safe. But at least the storm passes after an hour or two. I'm so sorry that this is happening to your family, Vladimir.
Shalomboy··on Gov.uk Platform as a Service
Damn, I wish the USDS was this robust :/
Shalomboy··on Number of people on government websites now
The fact that a lot of Chromebooks are being sold is fairly solid; I would reckon that the questionable claim is that Chromebooks have strong sales traction with retail consumers. I bought myself a Lenovo Duet tablet last fall because I wanted a device that could last multiple days with intermittent streaming use and I missed the feeling of a cramped 10" netbook. I got it on sale for $200 USD and was floored by how nice the experience was on a PC that cheap. But friends and family who saw me with the tablet were shocked that I, an adult who likes computers, owned a Chromebook. I only know one other person IRL with a personal chromebook, and they bought it after being given a school-deployed one in college.
Shalomboy··on The data behind New York's increasingly dirty electricity peaks
I really don't get the whining about categorizing Natural Gas and Coal as dirty. Hydrocarbons make CO2 as a byproduct of each molecular reaction. That isn't debatable!

The thing I do want to debate is the classification of Hydro as Clean Energy. The meager power generation that hydroelectric dams produce isn't nearly enough to offset the environmental damage necessary to produce a hydroelectric reservoir.

Shalomboy··on SkipTheInterview launches then promptly shuts down
I mean, when your startup is at soft-launch stage and the exact market your startup is targeting is turning its nose up loudly, maybe it's not a bad idea to listen to them.
Shalomboy··on Twitch source code and customer data has reportedly been leaked
TFS converting to Git/Azure DevOps here. Be the change you want to see in the world! There's a chance that some of the people in your org that don't use TFS could use the organizational tools built into GitHub/GitLab/BitBucket/DevOps. If you get enough teams on board with that platform that also happens to use Git, then you can make that push to IT!
Shalomboy··on Fraidycat
I think the UI decision here is the genius part. The scrollable feed has become the dominant means of displaying content for so long that it might as well be the default. With such limited space in the feed the curation system has to guess what you'll want to see next - it bases that guess on what will generate the most engaging experience for you, which turns the whole thing into a ratrace for creators. What if I just want to check in on a guy on the internet once every blue moon to see what they're doing? That isn't an option anywhere else, as far as I can see.

I'm looking forward to using Fraidycat.

Shalomboy··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
I always felt like adult websites were tech unsavvy. Like they usually designed the site with plenty of love and care, but the structures holding that design up felt notably behind-the-times. Got a take on that?
Shalomboy··on Tropigro – the modern plant growing appliance
So I did my due diligence, and it sounds like these systems were developed for NASA as part of a grant. Why are they posing their product against trendy minimal home offices on their website? And what have they fundamentally achieved here compared to a guy with PVC pipes and a pump?
Shalomboy··on Ask HN: How should a programming language accommodate disabled programmers?
Just wanted to chime in to say thank you for your consideration of visually-impaired programmers with suggestion 1.
Shalomboy··on Introducing the new Snapchat
Seconding this. Took snapchat to Sulawesi and had no issues.
Shalomboy··on Show HN: Product job board created with Vue.js
FWIW I built a little calculator project using Vue and Vuetify this summer and I really liked Vue's easy-to-run-with feel, but I couldn't jibe with how difficult Vuetify was to customize. Maybe I wasn't reading the docs correctly, or maybe it was my concurrent learning of Vue that made Vuetify seem obtuse, but I just found the whole experience frustrating. My god was the result pretty though. 7/10 would star on GitHub.
Shalomboy··on Show HN: BoatFace, an Alexa skill to tell you what that boat is
So as a less-than-avid boater myself, I gotta ask – how serious is this skill? I could see the value to SAR crews, but that would require a lot more functionality than I think Alexa provides at the moment.
Shalomboy··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2017?
I read Disrupted by Dan Lyons over the summer. It's by no means an objective piece, but I don't think that Lyon's negative opinions of the VC-tech scene are undeserved. Also, he is an exceptionally talented narrator.
Shalomboy··on Show HN: Website by a dentist to help anyone with dental problems
This is a beautiful service. My stepfather is a dentoid, and I couldn't be happier to see this information disseminated so openly.
Shalomboy··on Cape Coral, a boomtown that shouldn’t exist
Just went for the first time to buy a replacement monitor. It's shocking how accurate the above statement is.
Shalomboy··on Show HN: Baseball-Stats.net; a web reference of common baseball statistics
Lovely idea, especially since so many of the online resources from this domain haven't kept up with design conventions. But for a data-centric site, your layout doesn't seem all that in line with your content. Could you elaborate a bit more about your vision here?
Shalomboy··on San Francisco Is Burning
For what it's worth, the reporter is the a fairly popular author; he wrote "The Psychopath Test" and "So You've Been Publicly Shamed." He writes the you've shown to serve an argument he's making in his books. I wouldn't be surprised if this article is actually a chapter or a passage from an upcoming book of his. He isn't following proper journalistic writing standards, but he also isn't trying to be a journalist. GQ probably wanted to drive readership to their site and their July 2017 issue, so they asked if Ronson had anything in the works and paid him for the rights to publish an excerpt from his manuscript.
Shalomboy··on What is the oldest living organism on the planet?
Gymnosperms – the marathon runners of the botanical world. Tré dope, mon dude.
