I think the UI decision here is the genius part. The scrollable feed has become the dominant means of displaying content for so long that it might as well be the default. With such limited space in the feed the curation system has to guess what you'll want to see next - it bases that guess on what will generate the most engaging experience for you, which turns the whole thing into a ratrace for creators. What if I just want to check in on a guy on the internet once every blue moon to see what they're doing? That isn't an option anywhere else, as far as I can see.
