Shadowed_··on Ask HN: What are your thoughts on Cover Letter during application stage
Most if not all of my applications are by e-mail. I consider that e-mail a cover letter. What goes in cover letter I write in an e-mail and attach CV. To me, it would be rude to send e-mail with text that point to the text in attachment. But if I write that I apply for such and such and make my case for it, then there is no point in doubling that in separate pdf and attaching it.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Course/Book for creating desktop apps in C#
I will go against the grain and recommend learning WPF baceuse principles learned there (xaml and mvvm pattern) will be usable and transferrable to most other UI frameworks that came later. It's also stable and mature technology and works on older Windows versions as well.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Shouldn't high inflation incentivize more startups to produce mo value?
I don't think it would make money more valuable but it would make product/service less valuable. What I mean by this? If you could by 10 product units for $10 and now only 5 units due inflation. If you produce double units, yeah, maybe you will reduce price to $1 but only because you increased supply without increasing demand. You would be practically giving away product unit for every you sold.

Disclaimer: I'm not any kind of economic expert, it's just contemplation.

Shadowed_··on What to Do If a Nuclear Disaster Is Imminent
I even heard people who support Russia claiming that Ukrainians bombarded/shelled their own cities...
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Why corporate culture never increment your salary?
This is common but shortsighted approach. They are not losing staff now. But they should be aware that it doesn't mean they will not lose it in future and should work toward preventing it. Raise is one way to do it.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Why corporate culture never increment your salary?
No raise will push harder.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: For a job in tech, are you only interested in remote only jobs?
If you are doing things you like, it's not wasted :)
Shadowed_··on Why do we salt the ice when making ice cream?
I heard explanation few times before but yours is the most clear and simple of them all.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: How to cancel Adobe CC subscription without paying a “cancellation fee”?
Maybe CorelDraw could be a good replacement for Illustrator. Disclaimer: I did use CorelDraw but not Illustrator (at least not significantly), so maybe I'm missing something.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Do you still buy physical tech books like “Learn Rust” or “Learn Go”?
Completely switched to eBooks. Main reason is space and also availability. I move often and if I had all or most books that I read in paper form, it would both take too much space and be problem to move to other place. I don't miss paper books. I read fiction on eBook reader (first Kindle, but switched to Kobo for bigger screen) and for me, feeling is same as with paper to extent that sometimes when dust or hair drops on screen I move it away before turning page as I would do with paper book so it doesn't stay between pages. IT books I read on my computer. For them I prefer eBook format as it is easier and faster to navigate, you can do text search, copy from them etc.

Saving few trees from being converted to paper is also a motivation :)

Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Free for a month. What to do?
Anything but work.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Is forcing users to use a photo of themselves (Slack, etc.) ethical?
It is not important. It is personal preference. I, for example, couldn't care less. I would be even fine with my colegues using nicknames like here on HN.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: Is forcing users to use a photo of themselves (Slack, etc.) ethical?
If you are not going to see someone in person or it will be very infrequently, there is less need to match face to a person. And why would you match it anyway. I understand that some people like to match face to name/person and feel more comfortable but it is not real need. Work doesn't depend on that and comfort of one person should not be appeased on account of discomfort of another person.
Shadowed_··on Show HN: Search Aggregate – Search results from lots of different sites
It is perfectly fine. It's just that name is misleading. Aggregate would mean that it takes search results from multiple engines and combines them. Btw, I don't know about other browsers but Firefox supports multiple search engines out of the box. You can add new ones from many websites that supports adding and also you can easily search more than one. Just middle-click each one you want.
